Texas City Council Rejects Red Light Camera Initiative

“The city council in Sugar Land, Texas does not want voters to have a say in whether red light cameras are used in the Houston suburb. Although more than 3000 residents signed a petition requesting the issue be placed on the November ballot, and the city secretary verified a sufficient number met the legal requirement, the council voted Tuesday to reject the petition. The council’s decision protects the four intersection cameras operated by American Traffic Solutions, one of which only began issuing $75 tickets a month ago. Before that device was added, the cameras issued 10,549 tickets worth $791,175 in a twelve-month period.”

Jury Nullification Panel @ PorcFest 2013

“The American criminal ‘justice’ system incarcerates 743 of every 100,000 people, the highest rate of imprisonment in the world. While New Hampshire has one the lowest rates of incarceration in the country, between 1982 and 2007, there was a 564% increase. The jury Nullification panel will discuss efforts of New Hampshire citizens to reverse this trend.”

UK ministers to seize back 100 powers from Brussels

“In the first part of efforts to renegotiate Britain’s relationship with the European Union, ministers will announce plans to claw back the powers.  Theresa May, the Home Secretary, will give MPs details of proposals to opt out of 133 EU measures covering justice, home affairs and the police by next spring.  Some of the measures that are seen to be in the national interest will then be opted back into, in a complex process, but ‘more than two thirds’ will disappear permanently from British law.  The move follows last week’s unanimous Commons vote in favour of moves to hold an ‘in-out’ referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU by 2017.”

CA Medical Marijuana Dispensary Numbers Shrink in Two-Pronged War of Attrition

“Anyone who is following the situation in the Golden State at all closely has seen a numbing litany of reports of dispensaries forced out of business, including from some of the most venerable, respected, and law-abiding operations in the state. What had been the occasional raid or prosecution by the DEA or federal prosecutors during the early years of the Obama administration has turned into a heightened onslaught since the issuance of the notorious Cole memo, written by Assistant Attorney General James Cole, two years ago next week and the announcement by California’s four US Attorneys that fall that they were declaring open season on dispensaries.”

Florida County Moves To Shut Down Red Light Cameras With Public Vote

“The board of commissioners in Hernando County, Florida has been trying for months to force the city of Brooksville to remove red light cameras from the county’s right-of-way. So far, nothing has worked and the county commissioners agreed last week to use the ultimate political persuasion — a vote of county residents — to force the issue. Yellow light warning times at the camera intersections were also increased on Thursday.”

Egypt’s Tamarod protest movement

“Tamarod is a new grassroots protest movement in Egypt. The group, whose name means ‘rebel’ in Arabic, claims it has collected more than 22 million signatures for a petition demanding President Mohammed Morsi step down and allow fresh presidential elections to be held. Following Sunday’s massive demonstrations, in which millions of people took to the streets in Cairo and other cities, Tamarod gave the president an ultimatum to resign or face a campaign of ‘complete civil disobedience’.  It urged ‘state institutions including the army, the police and the judiciary, to clearly side with the popular will as represented by the crowds’.”

Marijuana’s March Towards Mainstream Confounds Feds

“It took 50 years for American attitudes about marijuana to zigzag from the paranoia of ‘Reefer Madness’ to the excesses of Woodstock back to the hard line of ‘Just Say No.’ The next 25 years took the nation from Bill Clinton, who famously ‘didn’t inhale,’ to Barack Obama, who most emphatically did. Now, in just a few short years, public opinion has moved so dramatically toward general acceptance that even those who champion legalization are surprised at how quickly attitudes are changing and states are moving to approve the drug – for medical use and just for fun.”

Pot Is Legal, but Some Towns Won’t Partake

“More than two dozen cities and towns have already prohibited marijuana retail stores, according to the Colorado Municipal League, a lobbying group for the state’s cities. Others, like Aurora outside of Denver, decided to postpone a decision on whether to allow sales. In Denver, leaders want to allow pot sales, but have said they want to push back the starting date for new businesses other than medical-pot outlets. The opt-out clause included in the Colorado pot law doesn’t exist in Washington, which also legalized recreational pot last November. But local officials are using licensing and zoning to keep pot shops at bay.”

National Lawyers Guild Report Supports Further Marijuana Legalization Initiatives

“As the nation waits for a response from the White House, the NLG joins other organizations and individuals in calling for the end to marijuana prohibition. ‘Marijuana legalization will create new jobs, generate millions of dollars in tax revenue, and allow law enforcement to focus on serious crimes,’ said Brian Vicente, NLG member and one of the primary authors of Colorado’s legalization amendment. ‘It would be a travesty if the Obama administration used its power to impose marijuana prohibition upon a state whose people have declared, through the democratic process, that they want it to end.'”

Colorado Governor Signs Marijuana Legalization Bills

“In a public ceremony at the state capitol in Denver Tuesday, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) signed into law four bills that will establish a legal, regulated marijuana market for adults and begin the development of a regulatory framework for industrial hemp production.  The package of bills had passed the legislature earlier this month in accord with the requirements of Amendment 64, which won with 55% of the popular vote last November. That groundbreaking vote led Hickenlooper to sign an order legalizing marijuana possession and to appoint an Amendment 64 Implementation Task Force late last year, which provided guidance to the legislature.”
