Police Fatally Shoot Okla. Man While Forcibly Rescuing Him From Flood

“The troopers responded to a report of a stranded vehicle in Okmulgee County, about 20 miles south of Tulsa, about 9:30 p.m. Friday. They found two men trying to remove a vehicle from a roadway over which water was rising and moving quickly, according to Capt. Paul Timmons.  ‘They were trying to get them to come out of the water. They were worried about them getting swept away,’ Timmons said. ‘(The men), for whatever reason, were just really upset about having to leave the vehicle there.’  At least one man attacked a trooper after reaching dry land and was shot and killed.  KOKI-TV reported that the man who was killed was an assistant pastor of Faith Bible Church in Tulsa.”

Nepali State to Seize All Relief Funds from Bank Accounts

“After the money grab led to a public outcry, Nepali state actor Narayan Malego claimed that the seizure was justified, promising that the Nepali bureaucracy will ensure that ‘benevolent donations are not misused and the rights of victims are protected.’  But The Economist reports that after speaking to politicians, journalists and activists all across Nepal, they found the state apparatus there to be ‘marked by systematic fraud, [with] the financing of political networks [benefiting] powerful local figures and, indirectly, criminal gangs.’ And as for the ‘rights of victims,’ The Jackson Sun reports that the Nepali state has already been blocking the delivery of aid items by holding up the goods in airports.”

Government Mismanagement Causes California Water Crisis

“California Central Valley has a water crisis, not because the state doesn’t have enough water, but because government agencies have allowed massive amounts of water to flow out to the ocean instead of storing it for future need.”

Turkey Arrests More Than A Dozen In Connection With Mine Disaster

“Turkish authorities arrested more than a dozen people in connection with the country’s worst mining disaster.  According to the Times of India, the arrests include mining company executives.  The BBC reports that after the rescue operation concluded on Saturday, the death toll stood at 301. Tuesday’s disaster occurred when an explosion sent carbon monoxide gas into the mine’s tunnels while 787 miners were underground. Sky News reports that some of the miners’ family members dispute the death toll and are accusing the government of a ‘cover-up to hide the true scale of the disaster.’  36 people were arrested because they were suspected of wanting to take part in protests.”

Questions remain in Chinese earthquake that killed more than 80,000

“The disaster provoked widespread grief in China, but also outrage after it emerged 7,000 schools were badly damaged in the southwestern province, triggering accusations of shoddy construction, corner-cutting and possible corruption, especially as many other buildings nearby held firm.  The aftermath of the earthquake saw the rise to prominence as a government critic of artist Ai Weiwei, who organised a citizens’ probe into the school collapses. The campaign led to him being badly beaten by police when he tried to testify in support of an activist who had investigated the issue.”

Are giant bubbles the key to beating Beijing’s pollution?

“As Asia struggle with an ever increasing pollution problem, one firm believes a project that sounds like the plot of a sci-fi film could bring relief.  Orproject, a London design agency, wants to build a park enclosed in a giant ‘bubble’ – and says school playgrounds could be enclosed in smaller versions of the clean air system.  The park would contain a large botanical garden, and be completely sealed from the outside world, with perfectly clean air being pumped into it.  Electricity for the project can be generated by solar cells integrated into the canopy surface, and the heating and cooling of the air is done through a ground source heat exchange system.”

West Virginia residents sickened after exposure to ‘safe’ water

“A week after a tank at a chemical storage site owned by Freedom Industries leaked thousands of gallons of 4-methylcyclohexane-methanol, or MCHM, into the Elk River, contaminating the drinking water of 300,000 West Virginia residents, some say they do not trust the insistence of the Environmental Protection Agency and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection that water from the river is becoming safe to drink.  Little is known about MCHM, which is used to process coal before it is burned. The EPA has claimed that water containing less than 1 part per million (ppm) of the chemical is safe to drink, but some experts question how that safety threshold was determined.”

California Urged To Post Information On Fukushima Disaster Risk

“Saying that Californians are concerned and seeking information about potential health risks caused by contaminated water coming to the state from the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster, Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) is urging the state’s Department of Public Health to post updated information on the issue to its homepage.  Wieckowski said the federal government has suggested Fukushima’s problems pose no risks to California’s coastal and estuarine lands.  However, online speculation about contaminated water traveling to California, and higher than normal radioactivity levels on a California beach have increased the public’s concerns.”

Japan Fukushima panel proposals include Tepco breakup

“The task force of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe‘s Liberal Democratic Party favors reorganizing Tokyo Electric, known as Tepco, by creating a unit within the company to handle the key functions of decommissioning the reactors and cleaning up massive amounts of toxic water, the source said.  The panel will also list the options of breaking that unit off from the listed utility giant or hiving it off as a government-affiliated independent administrative agency, the source said. The amount of taxpayer money to be spent on Fukushima is a matter of fierce debate. An existing special tax for reconstruction from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that wrecked the Fukushima facility will not be enough.”

Japan nuclear agency says Fukushima water leak risk exaggerated

“The chief of Japan’s nuclear watchdog chided the operator of the Fukushima plant Thursday for its inability properly to explain problems, which he said was inflating fears around the world.  Shunichi Tanaka, chairman of the Nuclear Regulation Authority, said information given by Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) on the level of radioactive contamination was ‘scientifically unacceptable’.  Tanaka’s comments come after TEPCO announced it had detected a hotspot with a reading of 2,200 millisieverts per hour.  TEPCO has confirmed that a reading of 2,200 millisieverts per hour would be enough to kill a person in a matter of hours.”
