So they’ve turned to the black market, trading the insulin that Corely’s insurer will buy with other diabetic people they meet on the internet, who are covered on plans that buy the kind of insulin Corely needs to not slip into a coma and die before her tenth birthday.”

Peter Schiff, Trumpcare: Different Plan, Same Problems

“A new form of insurance that this law may create: A policy that would pay for health insurance premiums if the user ever got sick enough to need them.  Such insurance would be very cheap, as the maximum exposure to the insurance company is only 130% of the premium for a standard health insurance policy.  In the end, the only people buying health insurance would be those who can buy it for free using their tax credits and really sick people for whom insurance premiums are cheaper than their medical bills.   But as insurance companies lose money on the latter group, they will be forced to raise their premiums on the former.  This puts us right back in the box we are stuck in with Obamacare.”

Obamacare architect: High-deductible plans overdone

“One of the chief architects of the president’s health law said Friday the plans offered on government-run exchanges need to be more affordable in order to boost participation rates. High-deductible plans are part of the problem, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel added. ‘We’ve overplayed the high-deductible plans. People are feeling this is less and less insurance. And just more and more, ‘I’m paying out of my pocket.” According to the government, the penalties for not getting health insurance are going up substantially in 2016.  The penalty is calculated as a percentage of taxable household income or per person, whichever is higher.”

Harvard researchers: US police killings should be a public health issue

“The lack of accurate, real-time reporting of police killings in the US is causing what constitutes a public health issue, according to researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.  In a report published in PLOS Medicine this month, researchers arguethat because police killings affect more than just the deceased, data on these deaths should be released immediately as public information. The deceased’s family, as well as his or her community, is affected by civil unrest that often transpires when mortal shootings are not immediately publicly reported, such as in the April 2015 case of Freddie Gray, a man who died in custody of the police in Baltimore.”

California Law Allowing Government to Seize Legal Guns Goes into Effect

“Beginning January 1, gun regulations in California will give authorities the right to seize a person’s weapons for 21 days if a judge determines the potential for violence exists.  The ‘law gives us a vehicle to cause the person to surrender their weapons, to have a time out, if you will,‘ Los Angeles Police Department Assistant Chief Michael Moore told a local NPR affiliate.  You read that right — a government-imposed time out. Now go sit in the corner, and think about what you did.  Second Amendment and constitutional advocates have been understandably upset by the coming law, saying further rules in a state already rife with restrictive gun laws will only serve to punish law-abiding gun owners.”

Police Officers Took 1,196 American Lives in 2015

“It is important to note that this number only includes the reported killings.  Most police misconduct goes entirely unreported.  For all anybody knows, the actual number could be anywhere between 2,000-3,000.  At least 27% of the people killed by police were suffering from mental illness, and instead of getting the help they needed, they were exterminated.  On the other hand, the number of police officers who were killed by gunfire has dropped dramatically — a nearly 15% reduction compared to previous years.  It is therefore puzzling as to why cops and their mainstream media lapdogs continue to insist that there is a ‘War on Cops’ in America.”

Martin Shkreli’s former company KaloBios files for bankruptcy

“The move comes after Shkreli, its former CEO, was charged on December 17 in federal court with securities fraud related to a hedge fund and another company. Shkreli pleaded not guilty to the charges.  Shkreli initially gained notoriety in September when, as the chief executive of Turing Pharmaceuticals, he raised the price of Daraprim— a drug used to treat a dangerous parasitic infection— from $13.50 to $750 per pill.  The move generated harsh criticism from prominent politicians, including Hillary Clinton, and spurred a senate investigation into drug pricing.”

State of Emergency Declared in Michigan City After Lead Found in Children’s Blood

“Flint River is one of the filthiest rivers in Michigan. Over the years, it has housed raw sewage, tires, old refrigerators — which residents have attempted to sift out — and lead. In spite of this, officials declared it safe to drink in April 2014, when they switched the supply to the tainted river.  The change was widely attributed to the city’s switch from Detroit’s water system to the Flint River under the leadership of the city’s previous mayor, Dayne Walling.  Shortly after the April switch, residents complained the water emitted a foul odor and was cloudy in appearance, but local and state officials insisted the water was safe.”

Cop who wanted to photograph teen’s erection in sexting case commits suicide

“Detective David Edward Abbott, a member of the Northern Virginia-Washington DC Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, last year had obtained a warrant to inject a young boy with a drug that would cause an erection. Abbott wanted to photograph that erection and compare it with photos found on a 15-year-old girl’s phone. Amid a public outcry, the Manassas City police eventually decided against doing that. The 17-year-old boy got a year of probation for sexting his teen girlfriend.  For at least two years, Abbott had an inappropriate relationship with a boy, now 13, police alleged. He was accused of soliciting sexual acts on the phone, via text messages and social media.”
