Ohio University Considers Mandatory Re-Education Classes For Smokers

“Officials at Ohio University are considering mandatory classes for students who get caught smoking on campus as part of a draconian ban on smoking for the upcoming 2015-2016 academic year.  The ban will outlaw every use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes on any part of the 1,850-acre public university campus, reports The Athens News, the local newspaper.  Smokers won’t be able to take refuge in any designated smoking areas, either. The ban is utter and total.  Smoking bans are all the rage at colleges and universities across the country. This year, The College Fix notes, Ohio State, San Diego State and every public college in Georgia have instituted such bans.”

After Second Ebola Patient, CDC Preps 20 U.S. Quarantine Camps

“The disease likely arrived via the local practice of hunting for bushmeat, which the impoverished locals regularly engage in, to gather enough to eat.  But there’s growing rumors and suspicion in the region among locals.  They believe that the U.S. may have pruposefully released the disease as some sort of weapons test.  Liberia promised to beef up security after a ebolavirus victim successfully circumvented airport security and boarded a plane to Nigeria.  Back home, [the CDC] issued its highest level of travel warning — Level 3 — urging Americans to avoid travel to the region.  Just in case, it’s already prepping twenty quarantine camps in major cities around the country.”

Venezuela’s airport ‘breathing’ tax

“The biggest international airport in Venezuela is charging a fee for the right to inhale clean air – and social media users are not happy.  We’re used to a seemingly endless range of taxes and surcharges when we fly – passenger taxes, departure taxes, fuel levies. But Maiquetia International Airport in Caracas has taken this a step further – passengers flying out now have to pay 127 bolivars tax (£12; $20) for the air they breathe.  This is to cover the cost of a newly-installed system which uses ozone to purify the building’s air conditioning system.  Some Venezuelans on social media fear the tax could end up being a new source of corruption. Others see it as evidence of how short of cash the airport is.”

Insurance Premiums Surging as Obamacare Kicks In

“We reviewed data from 784 health-care insurers around the nation. The sample included both private insurance firms and those with publicly traded parent companies, companies that took in a total of $450 billion in premium income last year.  Here’s what we found happened in the first quarter of this year, a period where Obamacare shifted into high gear:  Overall premiums rose a hefty 5.9 percent, or $12.44 per month, to $224.28. That followed a 2.7 percent increase in 2013. Private insurers who don’t have shareholders to answer to raised prices by 2.7 percent. But public companies jacked up their premiums by much more: 13.4 percent.”

This Company Saved Money By Tracking Employees With Fitbits

“One day soon, your company could hand you a fitness-tracking device as a gift.  The gift could have a sizeable payoff for the company. They could use it to track your fitness habits and, if you and your coworkers behave well, use that data to negotiate lower insurance premiums.  In fact, hot Valley startup Appirio did exactly that, handing out Fitbits to about 400 employees. And thanks to CloudFit, Appirio convinced its insurance company to lower its rates by 5%. That added up to a hefty  $280,000.  Thanks to provisions in the Affordable Care Act, which offers companies incentives for implementing wellness programs, and savings like that, more companies may try similar programs.”

Happy “No Refusal Day” 2014

Over the ‘Independence Day’ weekend citizens across the nation will celebrate the fourth day of July with a ‘blitz’ of ‘no-refusal’ blood-draw checkpoints. State troopers have renamed the weekend as ‘No Refusal Weekend.’  Drivers stopped by police who refuse to take an alcohol breath test will undergo a mandatory blood test either at the scene, at a medical facility or at the nearest jail. Anyone who even questions the breath test could also automatically lose their permission to drive for a year.  For those cities not officially implementing the ‘No Refusal Weekend’ they will likely be implementing a ‘Maximum Enforcement Weekend.’ Look for your region on the list.”

Hospitals profiling patients using their credit card purchase data

“If this story didn’t have a Bloomberg byline, I would swear it was from last night’s edition of The Daily Show. Hospitals are now buying consumer purchasing data to figure out who smokes, who has a car, and who shops at Walmart or Whole Foods. The idea is to identify high-risk patients and help them choose a different path before it’s too late.  Does anyone remember Snowden? Does anyone still think big institutions can manage enormous sets of data carefully and ethically? What are the chances that the bottom line will win out over individuals?”

Vibram required to stop all health claims about its FiveFinger shoes

“Vibram has settled a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of making false and unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits of its Vibram FiveFingers footwear, according to a report Tuesday from Runner’s World. The company will put $3.75 million into an escrow account to pay out settlements to class members and will remove all claims that its products either strengthen muscles or reduce injuries—unless it comes up with proof.  In addition to the settlement and removal of claims, Vibram is also required to run banner ads about the settlement on sites including runnersworld.com and Facebook.com and deliver around 300 million impressions of the ads.”

Oklahoma execution doctors’ secrecy law passed quietly

“The clause, tucked into HB 1991, prevents the public from knowing whether doctors, pharmacists, EMTs and others taking part in executions are qualified.   State officials have cited the law in refusing to discuss the training of medical officials who, when the inmate was still writhing on the gurney 33 minutes after the lethal injection had started, stopped the procedure. To ensure there is no record of the participants in executions, the Department of Corrections uses petty cash accounts to pay pharmacists, doctors and others.  Critics say such laws, which are being adopted rapidly by other states, merely serve to protect doctors and pharmacists from criticism.”

Liberty, NORML and Marijuana Legalization vs. Decriminalization

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“There has always been a market for marijuana. In many ways, it’s a product that, for decades, has literally sold itself. When the day comes that state and federal laws allow for the licensed production and commercial distribution of cannabis, it is likely that the majority of the cannabis consuming public will choose that legal, above-ground product over a black market, illicit product. And in that respect, there will be an opportunity for licensed entrepreneurs and businesses, and for the investors backing those entrepreneurs and businesses, to get in at the ground floor of what will certainly be a lucrative market that enjoys consistent high levels of public demand.”
