David Stockman: Worst Law Passed in Four Decades Must Be Stopped

Instead of chasing after the administrators of online marketplaces, the authorities should check out the business model with a view to drug decriminalization. A rating system for buyers and sellers, similar to that operating on eBay, and the sterile, anonymous way in which goods and money change hands, would serve nicely to bring down street crime and the use of contaminated substances.  It is a fact of life that these substances are readily available anyway, only without any kind of quality assurance system and often in dangerous settings.”

Georgia Police Kill Diabetic After Family Calls 911 Requesting Ambulance

“On Friday afternoon, 43-year-old Jack Lamar Roberson was shot to death by Waycross police officers in front of his mother, fiancé and 8-year-old daughter.  Alicia Herron, Roberson’s fiancé and girlfriend of 10 years, says she called 911 to request an ambulance for Roberson out of concern for his diabetic condition. But police arrived at their home instead. Immediately after the shooting, around 100 people gathered in the neighborhood to express outrage at Roberson’s death, describing him as a devoted father, partner and son who never caused any trouble.”

Silk Road closure reportedly cuts off supply of drug for assisted suicides

Usually these patients are in so much pain, or their quality of life is so diminished, that they no longer want to live and prefer to exit on their own terms. Such patients were using Silk Road to purchase the lethal drug Nembutal and download copies of an ebook called The Peaceful Pill Handbook, says Australian right-to-die advocate Philip Nitschke. A search of the Silk Road forums confirmed that vendors were advertising Nembutal, which also has recreational uses.”

Health Canada Approves Heroin Maintenance

“Last Friday, Health Canada used some creative rule-reading to approve a program that would provide prescription heroin to a small number of hard-core users, and the Conservative health minister isn’t happy. But doctors, advocates, and the users themselves are quite pleased — and once again, Canada stays on the cutting edge when it comes to dealing smartly with heroin use.  Health Canada approved access to prescription heroin for at least 15 people who are completing their participation in Vancouver’s Study to Assess Long-term Opioid Dependence (SALOME), which is testing whether prescribing heroin was more effective than prescribing methadone.”

CDC: Painkillers Kill Four Times More than Cocaine and Heroin Combined

“A powerful report spanning 10 years from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed that painkillers are actually responsible for a whopping four times as many deaths as both heroin and cocaine combined.  While the previous report documented in 2011 found that 12 million were actually on prescription painkillers purely for the high it gives, the new CDC papers found that there was a massive 415% rise in the overall rate of fatal painkiller overdoses from 1999 to 2010. We’re talking about a higher fatality rate than those who are dosing up on heroin and cocaine.”

Court rejects bid by Jehovah’s Witness to refuse blood transfusion

“The 17-year-old, who suffers from an aggressive cancer, lost his case against Sydney Children’s Hospital in March in which he had argued that treating him with blood products or a transfusion would breach his relationship with God.  ‘There is no doubting (the applicant’s) devotion to his faith, but his life has been cocooned in that faith,’ Justice Ian Gzell said at the time.  ‘The sanctity of life in the end is a more powerful reason for me to make the orders than is respect for the dignity of the individual.'”
