Spain considers timezone shift to combat ‘siesta-taking’, ‘late-night partying’

“Spanish lawmakers want to shift the country back a time zone and impose more healthy, family-friendly working hours: a tricky job in a land known for siestas and late-night partying.  A report recently approved by parliament called for Spain to turn back its clocks, jumping west an hour to the same time zone as Britain and Portugal.  Ignacio Buqueras, chairman of the commission that drew up the report, said Spain needs a ‘rational timetable… eight hours for work, eight hours for rest and eight hours for other activities’.”

Obamacare ‘navigator’ in Kansas has outstanding arrest warrant

“Her work involves enrolling people in the Affordable Care Act and helping them understand their choices, and it entails the same access to sensitive financial and health information as a navigator — leading observers to define ‘assister’ as another name for ‘navigator.’  Wells was certified as an Obamacare navigator despite her financial history, which includes a bankruptcy in 2003, a 2007 civil charge from a local check cashing business called Midwest Checkrite for writing a bad check, being more than $1700 behind on her state tax bill, and having an outstanding arrest warrant in nearby Shawnee County.”

Obamacare website security called ‘outrageous’ by John McAfee

“‘I’ll ask you your Social Security, your date of birth, [so] an hour later I can empty your bank account,’ John McAfee, who founded the cybersecurity company of the same name but is no longer associated with it, complained on Fox News. The Obamacare websites, he said, have ‘no safeguards,’ and the main site’s architecture is ‘outrageous.’  Federal officials say they have made website security a ‘top priority,’ said Marilyn Tavenner during a congressional hearing in July. ‘We will use appropriate policies, procedures, standards, and implementation specifications to ensure the privacy and security of consumer data in accordance with applicable law.'”

British company with $1.2 billion Obamacare contract accused of fraud

“A British multinational being paid $1.2 billion to implement Obamacare’s federal insurance exchanges is under investigation after allegedly overcharging the British government by tens of millions of dollars.  Reuters reports that Britain’s Serious Fraud Office is now looking into Serco, a massive service and security firm employing 120,000 worldwide, after the company reportedly overbilled its government client as much as $80 million for criminal electronic monitoring devices.  Around one in six of the criminals listed were already in prison, had left the country, were not required to wear a device, or were even dead. The alleged fraud prompted an audit from the U.K.’s Ministry of Justice.”

“The site is so busted that, as of a couple days ago, the number of people that successfully purchased healthcare through it was in the ‘single digits,’ according to the Washington Post.  The reason for this nationwide headache apparently stems from poorly written code, which buckled under the heavy influx of traffic that its engineers and administrators should have seen coming. But the fact that Healthcare.gov can’t do the one job it was built to do isn’t the most infuriating part of this debacle – it’s that we, the taxpayers, seem to have forked up more than $500 million of the federal purse to build the digital equivalent of a rock.”

US Supreme Court Rejects Marijuana Reclassification Appeal

“The US Supreme Court Monday declined to hear an appeal from medical marijuana advocacy groups who had challenged the DEA’s decision to maintain marijuana’s status as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, the category reserved for the most dangerous substances. The court denied in summary order a petition for a writ of certiorari from the groups, led by Americans for Safe Access, which had sought Supreme Court review of a DC Circuit Court of Appeals decision upholding the DEA’s ruling that a change in marijuana’s classification required the Food and Drug Administration’s recognition of acceptable medical uses for the drugs.”

Don’t imprison this cancer patient

“The same facts in a different state would leave Mackenzie labeled a homeopathic pioneer. In Iowa, he’s deemed a criminal so dangerous, county authorities have spent tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars in investigation, raids and court appearances that will lead to even higher incarceration costs upon conviction.  All of this is being spent on the same defendant jailed for two months, until Scott County authorities suddenly realized they might be on the hook for his medical bills. Then he was released without bond. This hypocrisy will continue as long as Iowa lawmakers ignore mounting evidence of marijuana’s medicinal qualities and its recreational harmlessness.”
