Two pints of beer better for pain relief than Tylenol: study

“By elevating your blood alcohol content to approximately 0.08 per cent, you’ll give your body ‘a small elevation of pain threshold’ and thus a ‘moderate to large reduction in pain intensity ratings’.  The researchers explained: ‘Findings suggest that alcohol is an effective analgesic that delivers clinically-relevant reductions in ratings of pain intensity, which could explain alcohol misuse in those with persistent pain, despite its potential consequences for long-term health.'”

Judge Orders California DA To Return Family’s Confiscated Life Savings

“The San Diego District Attorney (DA) seized all of the family’s money from their bank accounts on February 2, 2016, following a raid on James Slatic’s legal medical marijuana business. Although no one has been charged with any crime, the DA used civil forfeiture laws to seize more than $55,000 from James’ personal bank account, more than $34,000 from his wife, Annette, and more than $5,600 each from their teenage daughters Lily and Penny, who had saved the money for college.  Judge Ipema’s order requires the DA to return all $100,693.85 to the Slatics.”

Jacob Hornberger: Duterte’s Murder Model is the U.S. Government

“Duterte is doing nothing more than copying the processes and methods of the U.S. government in its war on drugs and its war on terrorism, both of which most members of the mainstream media have long supported.”

Cop fakes body cam footage, prosecutors drop drug charges

“Prosecutors in Pueblo, Colorado are dropping felony drug and weapon-possession charges after an officer involved in the case said he faked body cam footage so he could walk ‘the courts through’ the vehicle search that led to the arrest.  The actual footage of the search that he produced in court was a reenactment of the search, the officer told prosecutors.”

DEA Seized $3.2 Billion From People Since 2007 Without Charging Any Crime

“Common red flags for passengers are ‘traveling to or from a known source city for drug trafficking, purchasing a ticket within 24 hours of travel, purchasing a ticket for a long flight with an immediate return, purchasing a one-way ticket, and traveling without checked luggage.’  DEA agents then detain and question travelers with large amounts of cash, and, if they determine the money is linked to drug activity, seize it, even if there is no hard evidence that it is connected to illegal activity. As the Inspector General notes, these agents ‘rely on their immediate, on-the-spot judgment.’ The passenger is then released, bereft of money but otherwise free to go.”

Virginia Republican rep introduces bill to end federal marijuana prohibition

“The bill seeks to remove marijuana from the federal Controlled Substances Act and resolve the existing conflict between federal and state laws over medical or recreational use of the drug. It would not legalize the sale and use of marijuana in all 50 states – it would simply allow states to make their own decisions on marijuana policy without the threat of federal interference.”

Lacking More Important Business, Trump Renews War On Pot Smokers

NORML reports that White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer declared war on much of the cannabis community yesterday when he announced the the Trump administration intends to engage in the ‘greater enforcement’ of federal anti-marijuana laws in the eight states that have legalized and regulated its adult use.

In resuming this regressive policy, Trump stands with a shrinking minority.  Again, according to NORML, fifty-nine percent of voters say that adults’ use of marijuana should be legal while a whopping 93 percent support the medical use of marijuana. Perhaps most importantly, 71 percent of voters — including strong majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents — say that they ‘oppose the government enforcing federal laws against marijuana in states that have already legalized medical or recreational marijuana.’

At the Mises Institute, Ryan McMaken points out that 81 percent of all drug arrests are for simple possession, defining the renewed war on marijuana as a war on personal choice.  Since Trump has sided with the police regarding civil asset forfeiture and praised Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug death squads, drug-war abolitionists can likely expect little help from the Trump administration over the next several years.

Philippines anti-drug death squads to target 9-year-old children

“The move to target children signals Duterte’s determination to intensify his drug war, which faces outrage abroad and growing unease at home.  National police chief Ronald Dela Rosa recently announced that he was suspending anti-narcotics operations, which have killed more than 2,500 people, while the force rids itself of corrupt cops. The announcement came after it emerged last month that drug squad officers had killed a South Korean businessman at national police headquarters.  Duterte has signaled he intends to continue his drug war. In late January, he said the campaign would run until his presidency ends in 2022.”

Philippines to disband anti-drug death squads after killing South Korean businessman

“President Rodrigo Duterte said he was embarrassed that anti-drugs officers had abused their power to engage in kidnapping, leading to the death by strangulation of Jee Ick-joo, on the grounds of the national police headquarters.  More than 7,000 people have been killed since Duterte, nicknamed ‘the punisher’, unleashed his bloody crackdown seven months ago, some 2,250 in police operations and the rest still mostly under investigation. His six-year term ends in 2022.”

Russians Engineer a Brilliant Slot Machine Cheat, And Casinos Have No Fix

“The economic realities of the gaming industry seem to guarantee that the St. Petersburg organization will continue to flourish. The machines have no easy technical fix. At the same time, most casinos can’t afford to invest in the newest slot machines, whose PRNGs use encryption to protect mathematical secrets; as long as older, compromised machines are still popular with customers, the smart financial move for casinos is to keep using them and accept the occasional loss to scammers.  So the onus will be on casino security personnel to keep an eye peeled for the scam’s small tells. A finger that lingers too long above a spin button may be a guard’s only clue that hackers in St. Petersburg are about to make another score.”
