Europe’s Workers Flock to Norway for Better-Paying Jobs

“People in Norway are paid $80,000 a year on average and work 20 percent fewer hours than the average for the 34-member Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The country lags behind only the Netherlands and Germany for shortest work days.  Yet with 84 percent of companies experiencing a shortage of skilled engineers, according to government figures, the world’s fourth-largest gas producer is struggling to find the workers it needs to boost oil production. Oil and gas account for about 20 percent of gross domestic product. The AAA-rated country also boasts the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, valued at $750 billion.”

Surging Bitcoin Downloads in India

“Fears that the Federal Reserve will scale back its easy-money policies sent India’s rupee tumbling to record lows against the U.S. dollar this summer. And more recently, Moody’s warned that when the Fed does actually begin tapering its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases, countries with large current-account balances, like India and Brazil, will see even greater capital outflows. The outflows, in turn, will put their currencies and debt ratings further under pressure. In 2013 so far, India’s current-account deficit has grown to a record 4.9% of GDP. That loss of confidence in the rupee has translated into an opportunity for bitcoin.”

‘Rejoice: the Yellen Fed will print money forever to create jobs’

“We now know where we stand. Janet Yellen is to take over the US Federal Reserve, the world’s monetary hegemon, the master of all our lives.  The Fed will be looser for longer. The FOMC will continue to print money until the US economy creates enough jobs to reignite wage pressures and inflation, regardless of asset bubbles, or collateral damage along the way.  No Fed chief in history has been better qualified. She has pedigree. Her husband is Nobel laureate George Akerlof, the scourge of efficient markets theory.  Her lodestar is the ‘non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment’ (NAIRU). When the rate is above NAIRU, she is a dove: when below, she is a hawk.”

Bitcoin, Encryption, Drug Use, and the FBI’s Own Bitcoin Wallet

“One of the alleged reasons for the war on drugs is to prevent money from getting into the hands of terrorists. But if drugs were legal, prices would crash,  theft would plunge (drugs are expensive and addicts don’t have the money),  and terrorists would not make anything off drugs. Millions in prisons would not be there, and the pension problem of states would be far less.  Clothes would be made out of hemp, which has fiber softer than cotton. Hemp plants and seeds can be converted into biofuel far better than corn (which requires high quantities of fertilizer and water, and needs to be replanted every year).  Yet the extremely costly war and economically asinine war on drugs continues. Why?”

Silk Road and the potential to disrupt a truly evil industry

“The FBI admitted that Silk Road vendors provided high quality drugs. And the prices were far below the street.  Based on advanced Internet technologies, it was able to create a protected market that kept money out of the hands of violent street gangs and international criminal syndicates. It also protected buyers (lots of US citizens) from the poisons that adulterate street drugs.  If it had grown large enough, Silk Road, or a collection of similar online services, would have begun to seriously challenge the revenues of local and international mobsters on a scale that the war on drugs has consistently failed to do.”

Have We Reached Peak Government?

“How can government expand 300+% while the underlying economy that supports it expanded by 75%? Answer: borrowing money, i.e. debt–lots of it. Federal debt has skyrocketed by 600% since 1990.  This is simply part of a vast, unprecedented expansion of debt in both public and private sectors since 1990.  So the question of Peak Government is ultimately a question of Peak Debt: how much money can the government borrow to sustain its current spending? Can public and private debt expand at rates four or five times that of the underlying economy? If so, for how long? If we are not yet at Peak Debt, we are getting close, and that means we are also getting close to Peak Government.”

Jacob Hornberger: Shut Down the Nonessential Drug War

hornberger2

“The officers boarded the train with a drug dog and proceeded to guide the dog through the train, where he would sniff around everyone’s seats. I suppose the dog could smell drugs from a distance because everyone’s luggage was in the overhead container. Interestingly, they took the dog into the empty bathrooms, in case, I suppose, people had hidden their drugs there rather than keep them in their suitcases.  Of course, the officials had the serious, grave looks on their faces that characterize people with these types of jobs. All I could think as I watched them was how sad and pathetic their lives were. Think about it: What possible good were these people doing in life?”

International ‘war’ on illegal drugs is failing to curb supply

“The international war on illegal drugs is failing to curb supply, despite the increasing amounts of resource being ploughed into law enforcement activities, finds research published in the online journal BMJ Open.  Since 1990, the street price of  has fallen in real terms while the purity/potency of what’s on offer has generally increased, both of which are indicators of availability.  Three major trends emerged from the data analysis: the purity/potency of illegal drugs either generally remained stable or increased between 1990 and 2010; with few exceptions, the street price generally fell; and seizures of drugs increased in both the countries of major supply and demand.”

Jacob Hornberger: Permanently Lay Off the Parasitic Sector

hornberger2

“The problem is that as the government sector expands in a society, it creates the illusion that the parasitic sector, owing to its enormous size and reach, must be kept intact and even expanded to maintain economic prosperity.  But that’s the worse thing a society can do because it will only move society further in the wrong direction–in the direction of impoverishment and bankruptcy. The best thing people can do is permanently lay off all those parasitic workers (and bring an end to their welfare-warfare functions), thereby restoring the right of people in the private sector to keep their wealth and thereby raising everyone’s standard of living in that society.”
