Condoleezza Rice: Chances of strike on Iran ‘increasing’

In some cases, they say, government officials, including some close to Mr. Maliki, are directly profiting from the activities. Officials with knowledge of the Iraqi banking industry say that banks, hawala houses, an unofficial global network of money-traders, and their Iranian customers are finding ways around them.”

Top general: U.S. still has key Iraq role even after troop exit

“Top US military officer General Martin Dempsey insisted Washington still had an important role to play in Iraq, where he landed on Tuesday, eight months after American troops departed.  ‘We still retain significant investment and significant influence. But now it’s on the basis of a partnership and not on the basis of ownership,’ Dempsey said. Dempsey stressed that he came to build a dialogue with his Iraqi counterparts and explore expanding military ties, not to make demands.  And he said he wanted to discuss Iraq’s interest in training and military exercises with US forces as well as the possibility of arms sales.”

Suicide of Deloitte partner Daniel Pirron linked to Standard Chartered’s Iran scandal

“On August 6, Deloitte was accused by the New York Department of Financial Services of aiding Standard Chartered in its ‘deception’ over billions of dollars’ worth of trades involving Iran. Mr Pirron apparently took his own life seven days later.  Daniel Pirron was a detective for the Illinois Bureau of Investigation and the Securities and Exchange Commission in Chicago, before moving to work for Deloitte in 1990. Deloitte denied that Mr Pirron had any involvement in the Standard Chartered matter.”

Standard Chartered fined $340 million over Iran deals

“The ‘civil penalty’ came amid allegations that the London-based bank hid 60,000 transactions with proscribed Iranian clients worth $250 billion over ten years.  The clients included the state-backed Central Bank of Iran and the National Bank of Iran, both accused by Washington of helping Tehran seek nuclear weapons and fund terrorism.  Under the terms of the settlement with New York’s Department of Financial Services, Standard Chartered agreed to house a government anti-laundering monitor for two years at its New York branch.” [Regulation combined with warmongering is highly profitable.]
