Son Skips Church, Father Arrested for Child Endangerment

“What started out as a normal Sunday morning for Jeffrey Williamson of Blanchester, Ohio, turned into a nightmare when police officers showed up to his front door and arrested him in front of his family. His crime? Child endangerment—as the authorities described it—because his son skipped church to go play with friends. He now faces up to six months in jail.  To make matters worse, as a result of local news coverage of the event, Williamson was fired from his job and remained unemployed for a period of time.  The haste by the police to arrest Williamson instead of inquiring further about the situation led to him his ability to financially provide for those same children.”

U.S. government waging war on school bake sales?

“The homemade brownies, cupcakes and Rice Krispies treats that parents prepare for these fundraisers will come under extra scrutiny because of new federal regulations that took effect July 1.  The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 puts the USDA in charge of monitoring whether schools meet the new healthy meal standards. The USDA also has the authority to set nutritional standards for all foods regularly sold in schools during the school day, including vending machines, the ‘a la carte’ lunch lines, school stores and the traditional K-12 bake sale.  More bake sales are offering processed, pre-packaged goods because the nutritional contents are clearly labeled.”

After Second Ebola Patient, CDC Preps 20 U.S. Quarantine Camps

“The disease likely arrived via the local practice of hunting for bushmeat, which the impoverished locals regularly engage in, to gather enough to eat.  But there’s growing rumors and suspicion in the region among locals.  They believe that the U.S. may have pruposefully released the disease as some sort of weapons test.  Liberia promised to beef up security after a ebolavirus victim successfully circumvented airport security and boarded a plane to Nigeria.  Back home, [the CDC] issued its highest level of travel warning — Level 3 — urging Americans to avoid travel to the region.  Just in case, it’s already prepping twenty quarantine camps in major cities around the country.”

For months, 911 callers got ‘hang up and dial 911’ automated message

“No one suffering from an emergency expects to be greeted by a recording when they dial 911.  Yet 911 callers in Caddo County, Oklahoma were unable to reach a human operator for months in 2013. According to the FCC, Hinton officials explained that ‘in August 2002, the Caddo County Sheriff’s Office specifically declined to accept 911 calls from its Caddo County customers due to a lack of personnel and resources, and that the only feasible means of routing 911 calls was to direct such calls to a live AT&T operator for connection to a list of county emergency offices provided to the live operator by Hinton.’  Hinton was caught unaware when AT&T discontinued the live operator service.”

US officials: New leaker compromised national security after Snowden

“The United States government has concluded that a new leaker has been supplying members of the media with classified documents, CNN reported on Tuesday.  Sources asides, the latest documents cast a rare light on the US government’s use of ever-expanding federal watchlists.  More than 40 percent of the 680,000 individuals listed in the US Terrorist Screening Database shared with local police agencies, contractors and governments around the globe have ‘no recognized terrorist group affiliation.’  Additionally, the documents reveal that the number of people barred from flying in the US — entrees on the infamous ‘no-fly list’ — has increased 10-times since 2009 to a total of around 47,000.”

Bank of England warns of a bubble as UK house prices rise 10.5%

“Mark Carney told MPs on the Treasury select committee that the threat of a property bubble was the ‘biggest risk’ to economic recovery over the medium term, as official figures showed house prices rose by 10.5% in the year to May – and more than 20% in London. Outlining in detail why the Bank’s financial policy committee made the decision last month to limit the proportion of high loan to income mortgages granted by lenders, he said that a proliferation of highly indebted households could tip the economy back into recession.  Prices have risen more quickly for first-time buyers than for those moving home, going up by 11.3% over the year to an average of £202,000.”

Australian Regulators Stand By as Global Mortgage Debt Drives Up Prices

“Central banks from Scandinavia to the U.K. to New Zealand are sounding the alarm about soaring mortgage debt and trying to curb risky lending. In Australia, where borrowing is surging, regulators are just watching.  Australian household debt is at a 25-year high, according to statistics bureau figures, and a government inquiry this month found housing to be a significant source of risk to the financial system.   The central bank has reduced its benchmark interest rate to a record-low 2.5 percent to aid a recovery in non-mining industries, including residential construction, as the nation’s resources boom slows.”

FedEx Facing Criminal Charges for Shipping Internet Pharmacy Drugs

A federal grand jury in San Francisco has indicted FedEx, the world’s largest cargo company, on criminal charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and distribution of misbranded drugs. Federal prosecutors are seeking to forfeit and seize at least $820 million in what they say are proceeds from such illegal shipments.  The move comes after FedEx rejected offers from federal prosecutors to cut a deal. FedEx’s chief competitor, UPS, settled a similar case last year by agreeing to pay $40 million after being linked to the shipment of prescription drugs by illegal online pharmacies. Both cases were brought by US Attorney for the Northern District of California Melinda Haag.”

Cyprus: 16 months of capital controls, banks still pitifully capitalized

“It’s been over a year since the banking system in Cyprus officially went bust.  On Friday, March 15, 2013, practically everyone in the country went to bed thinking that everything was just fine.  Many had probably gone to the bank that very day to do business, or logged on to an Internet banking platform.  Yet the very next morning, they woke to a completely new reality: the nation’s banks were broke, and the government was in no position to rescue them.  All the promises they had been told about government guarantees and having a ‘well-regulated’, sound banking system turned out to be lies.”

IMF pronounces Bulgaria’s banks safe, 2 weeks before bank run

“Earlier this summer, IMF bureaucrats went to Sofia, Bulgaria to study the country’s economic progress.  And roughly a month ago, they released an official report which stated, among other things, that Bulgarian banks are ‘stable and liquid.’  Talk about epic timing. Because less than two weeks later, Bulgaria’s banking system was in the throes of a full-blown crisis.  There was a run on two of the nation’s largest banks—several hundred million dollars had been withdrawn in a matter of hours.  And the Bulgarian central bank had to step in and take over both of them or risk a collapse in the entire system.”
