Who controls the cop cam?

“Once a simple stun-gun manufacturer, Taser has reinvented itself as an all-in-one law enforcement technology ecosystem: less-lethal weapons linked to cameras that automatically send footage to Taser’s evidence management database, where it can be edited and packaged using Taser’s cloud software tools. It’s a single walled garden, explicitly modeled after Apple’s software controls, extending from the camera lens to the prosecutor’s laptop. And as it grows more popular, that system has put us on the cusp of a fundamental change in the way law enforcement works in America, shaping police departments to the logic of a software startup.”

Psychology group bans members from national security interrogations

“The American Psychological Association (APA) has approved a ban on psychologists’ involvement in national security interrogations.  The APA adopted the plan in the wake of 542-page independent investigation (PDF) that discovered psychologists worked with the Central Intelligence Agency to help silence dissent over harsh interrogation tactics being employed by the Bush administration (including torture). What’s more, the report found that APA officials colluded with military officials to adopt APA ethics rules in order to allow psychologists to be a part of tortuous interrogations in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.”

Facebook Monitors Private Messages and Photos, Reports to Police

“Facebook has a new little known software that monitors your profile chat and pictures for criminal activity. The software will proceed to alert an employee at the company who will then decide whether to call authorities or not.  Facebook’s software focuses on conversations between members who have a ‘loose’ relationship on the social network. For example, if two users aren’t friends, only recently became friends, have no mutual friends, interact with each other very little, have a significant age difference, and/or are located far from each other, the tool pays particular attention.”

US and UK laws will entrench surveillance powers across the Atlantic

“The draft Investigatory Powers bill has just been published in the UK while the US senate has voted through a proposed Cybesecurity Information Sharing Act.  Both nations are pursuing an aggressive path toward entrenching surveillance powers at the cost of citizens’ privacy. Both bills disregard privacy considerations: CISA through its power that subordinates other laws, the Investigatory Powers bill by expressly authorising bulk data collection with very little meaningful independent oversight.  It is hard to see how either of these bills is even a nod in the right direction.  They read like a confirmation that business as usual continues for the likes of the NSA and GCHQ.”

U.S. immigration forms project digitizes one form, at cost of $1 billion

“This project, run by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, was originally supposed to cost a half-billion dollars and be finished in 2013. Instead, it’s now projected to reach up to $3.1 billion and be done nearly four years from now.  A decade in, all that officials have to show for the effort is a single form that’s now available for online applications and a single type of fee that immigrants pay electronically. The 94 other forms can be filed only with paper. Agency officials did not complete the basic plans for the computer system until nearly three years after the initial $500 million contract had been awarded to IBM, and the approach to adopting the technology was outdated before work on it began.”

ObamaTrade: Total Surrender to the NWO

portallogo3

“It does not take 5,544 pages of legal verbage written by international lawyer-bureaucrats to obtain free trade. What it takes is for legislatures to reduce tariffs and import quotas. That is all it has ever taken: a willingness of politicians to stop passing laws that insulate inefficient domestic producers from foreign competitors who better satisfy the demand of residents of a nation. All it takes is for the government to stop hiring customs agents with badges and guns to tell citizens that they have to pay a discriminatory sales tax to buy something from across a national border.  ObamaTrade is the surrender of national sovereignty on a scale that is mind-boggling.”

No More “Free Trade” Treaties: It’s Time for Genuine Free Trade

“In 2012 we endured a fresh attempt by our governments to reduce our freedom to create and share intellectual works with the ACTA. And, if we look at the negotiations mandates of these trade agreements, we can see they all include a chapter on the reinforcement of ‘intellectual property’ rights. Intellectual property has become a key concept of the international economy. But this must not hide its illegitimacy.  Each time a new ‘free trade’ treaty is enacted, what is seen is the attenuation of tariff barriers, but what is not seen is the sneaky proliferation and harmonization of non-tariff barriers impeding free enterprise and creating monopolies at an international scale.”

U.S. police seek ‘blunt impact projectile’ weapons

“Police have long had what they considered ‘non-lethal’ weapons at their disposal, including pepper spray, stun guns and bean bag projectiles. But even those weapons have caused deaths, leading to a search for ‘less lethal’ alternatives.  Micron Products Inc., based in Fitchburg, makes the new ammunition, which are much larger than rubber bullets and have silicone heads that expand and flatten on impact, enhancing the pain and incapacitating a suspect.  Sixteen law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and six in Canada have purchased the projectiles, including SWAT units of the Los Angeles County and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Departments in California.”

War: Still a Racket

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“President Obama has been spending American blood and treasure in and around Syria for a full year now.  Whether attacking the Islamic State is necessary or advisable is beside the point. The War Powers Resolution clearly requires the president to withdraw from hostilities within 60 days unless Congress consents. It has not.  Keep in mind, this same Congress claims Obama has overstepped his authority in other areas and has taken many symbolic votes to prove it. They have filed lawsuits against him on matters far less serious than an illegal war. Yet in this case, they are happy to let him keep bombing. Why?  The real answer is that war is very profitable.”

Former President Jimmy Carter Calls U.S. an Oligarchy

“Almost 35 years later, Carter is now the longest surviving ex-president in U.S. history. That’s a long time to observe and reflect. He has little to lose by being honest, so his comments last week deserve some attention. Carter blasted both major parties and from state legislatures up to Congress. The U.S., he believes, is an oligarchy built on unlimited political bribery. Those are strong words. We see them on sites like The Daily Bell, but considerably less often from those inside the oligarchy.  We are approaching, and perhaps already are at, a point where oligarchy is seen as normal and natural. People don’t mind living under oligarchy as long as the ‘right’ people control it.”
