“Among [former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley’s] most lucrative speeches was a $50,000 appearance at a conference in Baltimore sponsored by Center Maryland, an organization whose leaders include a former O’Malley communications director, the finance director of his presidential campaign and the director of a super PAC formed to support O’Malley’s presidential bid.  O’Malley also lists $147,812 for a series of speeches to Environmental Systems Research Institute, a company that makes mapping software that O’Malley heavily employed as governor as part of an initiative to use data and technology to guide policy decisions.”

To Be A Domestic Terrorist, Set Animals Free

“Was the shooter at the Louisiana movie theatre a domestic terrorist?  What about the man who killed four marines and a sailor in Chattanooga, Tennessee?  While the debate about the motives of the people responsible for these heinous acts continue, there’s no ambiguity about who the FBI and DOJ consider domestic terrorists: animal activists. Under AETA, anyone who damages the property or the profit line of an animal business and who uses ‘interstate commerce’ such as a cellphone or the internet can be convicted of terrorism even though no violence is involved. The law is written in such a broad manner that lawful activists simply speaking out can be labeled as ‘terrorists.'”

What Uber Can Teach Us About American Government

“Uber’s clash with government is uniquely popular among apolitical folks but its struggles are all too common. I applaud readers for following these developments and supporting Uber. But I encourage them to also pay attention when this happens to firms without huge national followings; to support the rights of all businesspeople to freely conduct their affairs and engage in mutually-agreeable transactions with other consenting adults.  It’s easy to stand up to abuses when a company is widely known and loved. But the universal applicability of the rights we want Uber to have is crucial for two reasons.”

Uber executives detained by police in Paris

“Two executives working for Uber in Paris have been arrested following months of fraught legal battles over the app-based ride hailing service.  The two unnamed executives were detained on Monday, city prosecutor Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre confirmed to the Associated Press. Details of any possible charges were not released immediately by authorities, with the prosecutor saying merely that they were in custody for questioning over ‘illicit activities’.  Uber has naturally argued, as it has in London and other cities, that it should not be punished for its technical innovation and convenience advantage over older cab systems that are unable or unwilling to innovate.”

US health insurers rush to consolidate after Obamacare ruling

“If the Anthem-Cigna deal is consummated soon, it would mean that the ‘big five’ health insurers, with 134m customers and combined annual revenues of $346bn, would have agreed to become a ‘big three’ in a matter of weeks.  The Supreme Court’s decision was the final part of a puzzle that has been painstakingly pieced together since the ACA was signed into law in 2009. The act was vehemently opposed at its inception by many health insurers, not least Anthem, then known as WellPoint. But it has created big opportunities for the industry, as Medicaid, a federally funded scheme for those on low incomes, is expanded, and millions of uninsured people are brought into private health plans.”

Even AT&T filed a brief in the case, arguing that the government’s actions were illegal. We all turn over huge amounts of information to third parties every day, and almost all of our activities can be tracked through our ‘smart’ devices. And as the amount of data that businesses collect on us grows, so do concerns over the government’s ability to access that data.”

Chinese regulator vows share support after markets tumble 8.5% in a day

“China said on Monday it was prepared to buy shares to stabilize the stock market and avert ‘systemic risks’, after major indices plunged more than 8 percent in the biggest one-day fall since 2007.  The securities regulator also said market authorities would deal severely with anyone engaged in the ‘malicious shorting of stocks’, in Beijing’s latest attempt to stave off a full-blown market crash.  Monday’s slump, amid growing doubts about the strength of the world’s second biggest economy, shattered three weeks of relative calm as a barrage of support measures helped stabilize values following a sharp sell-off that started in mid-June.”

Movie studios keep mistakenly reporting their own servers for piracy

“Scanning through the takedown notices posted to ChillingEffects.org, reporters at The Next Web noticed something strange and frankly sort of embarrassing. In a piracy takedown notice sent to Google last week, Universal Pictures France listed a local address (127.0.0.1:4001) as the illegal source for a copy of Jurassic World — ratting out their own computer for piracy and demanding Google delist it from public search rankings. Basically, they found their own movie on their own system and ran screaming to Google about film piracy.  It turns out, this happens all the time. TNW dug up more than a hundred other cases dating back years, using a simple ‘localhost’ search.”
