“Green Banks” Will Drown in the Red

“A state solvency report released by the Mercatus Center has each of these five states ranked in the bottom third of the country, with their solvency described as either ‘low’ or ‘poor.’  This all raises the question of whether these governments are able to find sound investment opportunities in the first place. Recently, though, there have been calls to extend the struggling green banking system to the federal level. Mark Muro and Reed Hundt at the Brookings Institute assert that demand for green banking institutions and the types of companies they finance is so strong that the existing state-based green banks cannot muster enough capital to meet demand.”

Obama renewing call to reauthorize Export-Import Bank

“President Barack Obama is ramping up pressure on Congress to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank.  The obscure federal agency’s charter expired last month after lawmakers refused to reauthorize it. The bank underwrites loans to foreign companies purchasing American products, but conservatives call it corporate welfare.  Obama on Wednesday plans to meet at the White House with owners of small- and medium-size businesses that have benefited from the bank. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has floated the possibility of attaching the bank’s reauthorization to a six-year highway and transit bill.”

The Ex-Im Bank Is Dead (For Now)

“After 81 years of funneling taxpayer dollars to favored companies, projects, and geopolitical outcomes under the guise of advancing some vague conception of the ‘U.S. economic interest,’ the Export-Import Bank of the United States will end its financing operations at midnight tonight. Proponents of the Bank have been regrouping and strategizing to move legislation to reauthorize the Bank at the soonest possible chance. In fact the White House is hosting a conference call for the purpose of advancing that outcome. The battle may be over but the war continues.”

Trump Tried to Bulldoze an Elderly Widow’s Home to Build a Limo Parking Lot

“Donald Trump is leading the GOP primary polls with 24 percent.  In 1994, Trump got Atlantic City to condemn Vera Coking’s home so that he could build limo parking for his Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. The Institute for Justice took on Trump in one of its first big eminent domain cases:  She was able to beat Trump and the city government and win the right to keep her property.  Coking moved to a retirement home in 2010, having lived almost 50 years in her Atlantic City home. Coking’s grandson finally sold the house in July 2014; less than two months later, the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino closed for lack of business.”

Ruling Allows Officials to Seize Your House Because It’s ‘Ugly and Dumb’

“What many people do not know is that the plan could have been finished without destroying many of the homes that were ultimately seized through eminent domain. Pfizer executives, however, said that they didn’t want their beautiful headquarters ‘surrounded by tenements.’  Think about that. A large corporation was going to receive a gigantic gift, but still felt empowered to demand that people whose homes could have been preserved must nevertheless be forced out because, as the president of NLDC put it, their houses looked ‘ugly and dumb.’ Thus we see one of the hidden consequences of eminent domain – it engenders a domineering, elitist attitude.”

China Introduces $483 Billion Stock Support Program

“China has made 2.5 trillion yuan to 3 trillion yuan ($483 billion) of funding available for government agency China Securities Finance Corp. to support the stock market, people familiar with the matter said.  The funding is to offer liquidity support to brokers and to purchase stocks and mutual funds.  Chinese stocks rose the most in a week as the government gains ground in efforts to stabilize a stock market that plummeted in the past month after a debt-fueled boom.  The money was available from the central bank’s relending facility; credit lines with commercial banks; borrowing by CSF in the interbank market; and bonds and short-term notes sold by CSF, the people said.”

Standing Between You And All The Benefits Of Telemedicine

“The same organization that thinks you shouldn’t be able to get a prescription from a Teladoc doctor you have never met, thinks it’s perfectly okay for you to get a prescription from an ‘on call’ doctor who you have also never met, who is subbing in for your regular doctor and who probably isn’t looking at your medical records when he orders the prescription.  Today, as in the past, organized medicine acts as a cartel agent for the doctors.  Another opponent is Medicare. In general, the federal government won’t pay for telemedicine except under special circumstances.”

Get a Room (But Only if it is Government-Approved)

Before we assume that the government crackdown on Airbnb comes from genuine concern about safety, we should consider some other, less benevolent motives.  First, many state and local governments have turned to hotel taxes to pad their budgets. Travelers can pay a tax up to 17 percent of the cost of their hotel room.  Second, and not surprisingly, many hotels staunchly oppose Airbnb. The threat is significant. Last year The Economist magazine stated that Airbnb could reduce hotel revenues as much as 10 percent. The American Hotel & Lodging Association spent over $1 million in lobbying last year, including a variety of attempts to legally disrupt or dismantle Airbnb’s business.”

496 Uber cars seized by NYC taxi police amid crackdown

“Hundreds of Uber cars were taken off the streets this spring as part of a larger city crackdown on illegal activity by black and livery cars, new data reveals.  The Taxi and Limousine Commission seized 496 cars currently affiliated with Uber’s bases between April 29 and June 15 for picking up illegal street hails, records show.  Black and livery car drivers are only allowed to do pre-arranged trips, whether it is through a smartphone app or a base dispatch.  Many of the Uber drivers who had their cars seized were doing illegal pickups at JFK Airport. The New York Taxiworkers Alliance said business has worsened for them because there is no cap on the number of Uber drivers.”

A Motel-Sized Victory for Privacy at the Supreme Court

“It’s worth stepping back to think through the logic embraced by Los Angeles, the LAPD, a district court, a Ninth Circuit dissent, and now, four dissenting Supreme Court justices. All seem comfortable with something that wasn’t addressed directly: the notion that hotel and motel guests have no right to privacy in information that they voluntarily turn over to third parties, per Smith v. Maryland.  The third-party information precedent is problematic on its own.  But it is devastating to privacy  when paired with laws that compel businesses to collect detailed information on customers and to turn it over to police without warrants, destroying the ability to enter voluntary transactions that include discretion.”
