Red-light cameras under scrutiny in state legislatures

“The South Dakota state House passed a bill that would ban both red-light cameras and speeding cameras by a whopping 69-1 margin. A Missouri state House panel on Monday heard testimony on a similar bill.  A measure has been proposed in Iowa to require cities to justify their need for photo enforcement cameras, and a 2013 bill to ban them outright is still pending in Ohio. Opponents of the red-light cameras span the partisan divide, complaining of invasions of privacy or back-door tax increases — even that the red-light cameras result in more fender-benders at intersections. In some states, the ACLU is a prime driver behind camera-banning legislation; in others, it’s the tea party.”

CISPA returns as CISA — and it’s just as terrible for privacy

“Leave it to Congress to keep recycling the same old, rejected ideas.  You remember the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act: introduced in 2011 but failed to pass the Senate, then reintroduced in 2013 only to be beaten back a second time.  Senators, unlike weatherman Phil in ‘Groundhog Day,’ seemingly learn nothing from past experience.  If CISA seems out of step with the pushback against government surveillance, keep in mind that while threatening to veto CISPA last year for not adequately preventing the sharing of irrelevant personal information, President Barack Obama has also championed the idea of increased data sharing between government and the private sector.”

Hospitals profiling patients using their credit card purchase data

“If this story didn’t have a Bloomberg byline, I would swear it was from last night’s edition of The Daily Show. Hospitals are now buying consumer purchasing data to figure out who smokes, who has a car, and who shops at Walmart or Whole Foods. The idea is to identify high-risk patients and help them choose a different path before it’s too late.  Does anyone remember Snowden? Does anyone still think big institutions can manage enormous sets of data carefully and ethically? What are the chances that the bottom line will win out over individuals?”

The Prison Industry in the United States: A New Form of Slavery?

“For the tycoons who have invested in the prison industry, it has been like finding a pot of gold. They don’t have to worry about strikes or paying unemployment insurance, vacations or comp time. All of their workers are full-time, and never arrive late or are absent because of family problems; moreover, if they don’t like the pay of 25 cents an hour and refuse to work, they are locked up in isolation cells.  There are approximately 2 million inmates in state, federal and private prisons throughout the country. According to California Prison Focus, ‘no other society in human history has imprisoned so many of its own citizens.'”

US police departments are increasingly militarised: report

“The hardware and tactics of the war zone are quietly proliferating at home.  The ACLU’s report, War Comes Home, looks at 818 Swat incidents that were carried out by more than 20 law enforcement agencies in 11 states. The raids spanned the period from July 2010 to last October.  At the very least, the ACLU finds, the growing use of battering rams to smash down doors is causing property damage to the homes that are raided. At worst, people are dying or being injured by police teams deploying the techniques of the battlefield.  The ACLU found that 79% of Swat team raids were on private homes, and only 7% were meant for intended for missions in line with Swat teams’ original purposes.”

SWAT teams claim they’re private and immune from open records

“According to the ACLU, the LECs are claiming that the 501(c)(3) status means that they’re private corporations, not government agencies. These agencies oversee police activities. They employ cops who carry guns, wear badges, collect paychecks provided by taxpayers and have the power to detain, arrest, injure and kill. They operate SWAT teams, which conduct raids on private residences. And yet they say that because they’ve incorporated, they’re immune to Massachusetts open records laws. The state’s residents aren’t permitted to know how often the SWAT teams are used, what they’re used for, what sort of training they get or who they’re primarily used against.”

Gamers Hit with Criminal Charges for Cheating Online

“Online game company Nexon is pressing charges against three gamers, ages 17 to 18, for obstruction of business. In short, the gamers were allegedly using in-game cheats for online FPS Sudden Attack. That, it seems, was hurting the game and Nexon.  Yomiuri Online, one of Japan’s largest newspapers, reports that this is the first time gamers have had criminal liability charged against them in Japan for allegedly using cheat programs.  One of the gamers is a university freshman, another is a 17 year-old vocational school student, and the last of the trio is a 17-year-old high school student.”
