“Big natural gas users and environmentalists have foreign allies, suggested by the statement of Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who told Saudi Arabia’s oil minister that rising American shale gas production is ‘an inevitable threat.’ Nigeria’s oil minister agrees, saying that U.S. shale oil is a ‘grave concern.’ In light of these foreign ‘concerns’ about U.S. energy production, one wonders whether foreign countries have given financial aid to U.S. politicians, environmentalists and other groups that are waging war against domestic oil and natural gas drilling. It would surely be in their interests to do everything in their power to keep the West dependent on OPEC nations for oil and gas.”

Small farmers say new federal regulations could halt local food trend

“As the local food movement gains steam, northern New England farmers are steaming mad about proposed regulations they fear will leave them unable to meet growing consumer demand for their produce. Andre Cantelmo of Heron Pond Farm in South Hampton helps run Eastman’s Corner, a foundation dedicated to making local farms an economically and environmentally sustainable, integral part of the community. The group is preparing to break ground on a large food distribution and preservation center, but uncertainty over looming food safety rules could halt that progress, he said.”

Facebook received more than 25,000 government data requests in the first half of 2013

“Facebook said Tuesday it received more than 25,000 government data requests in the first half of 2013, with the largest number from the United States. The company’s first ‘transparency report’ showed Facebook received between 11,000 and 12,000 requests for data in the United States, affecting between 20,000 and 21,000 users.  The report comes with US tech companies under pressure following revelations of a secret program which scoops up vast amounts of data from Internet firms.  The Facebook report said at least some data was released in 79 percent of US data requests.  The second largest number came from India, where 3,245 requests were made.”

U.S. tech sector feels pain from NSA PRISM revelations

“An industry group, the Cloud Security Alliance said last month that 10 percent of its non-US members have cancelled a contract with a US-based cloud provider, and 56 percent said they were less likely to use an American company.  A separate report this month by the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation, or ITIF, a Washington think tank, said US cloud providers stand to lose $22 billion to $35 billion over the next three years due to revelations about the so-called PRISM program. Daniel Castro, author of the report, says a loss of trust in US tech firms could lead to ‘protectionist’ measures that hurt the fast-growing cloud sector.”
