Nine charged for giving food to homeless in California

“Nine people in California have been charged after they handed out food to the homeless, violating a rule about sharing food in public places.  The group were protesting against an emergency ordinance in the city of El Cajon which was introduced in response to California’s hepatitis A outbreak.  They handed out food, clothes and toiletries on Sunday before police arrived and issued citations.”

Jury rules cops were justified in SWAT raid over family’s loose-leaf tea

“No one disputes that the Hartes are innocent of any criminal wrongdoing. No one disputes that the officers conducted a raid on their home after mistaking tea for marijuana. And no one disputes that the officers improperly used the results of notoriously unreliable field tests as probable cause for the mistaken raid, instead of sending the tea to a lab for more rigorous testing.  No one disputes any of these things. Yet the system failed to compensate the Hartes for what happened to them, and the system failed to hold any of the law enforcement officers accountable for their mistakes.”

Cheers! California Winery Unveils Marijuana-Infused Wine

“The company doesn’t plan to stop at just marijuana-infused Sauvignon Blanc. The owners are working on creating a pot-infused Rosé and champagne.  Any wine and marijuana lovers older than 21 can pre-order a bottle of this Sauvignon Blanc for $59.99. Orders are expected to be sent out in early 2018.  The company said the wine will be distributed through 500 marijuana dispensaries across the country.”

Florida Upholds Town’s Ban on Eating Front-Yard Vegetables

“Hermine and Tom had used their front-yard garden to grow vegetables and other plants for 17 years. Miami Shores told Hermine and Tom to destroy their garden or face fines of $50 per day. Unable to bear the cost of the fines, they dug up their garden.  In today’s decision, the court upheld the vegetable ban, concluding that it is rational for government to ban ‘the cultivation of plants to be eaten as part of a meal, as opposed to the cultivation of plants for ornamental reasons.'”

“By elevating your blood alcohol content to approximately 0.08 per cent, you’ll give your body ‘a small elevation of pain threshold’ and thus a ‘moderate to large reduction in pain intensity ratings’.  The researchers explained: ‘Findings suggest that alcohol is an effective analgesic that delivers clinically-relevant reductions in ratings of pain intensity, which could explain alcohol misuse in those with persistent pain, despite its potential consequences for long-term health.'”

California D.A.: Mom Facing Jail Time Over Homemade Ceviche Is Overreacting

“A California DA says the single mother of six facing prosecution for selling 32 ounces of homemade ceviche is ‘making more of this than it is.’ Mariza Ruelas, 37, made headlines Monday when she claimed to be facing a year in jail for a Facebook-based hobby. Ruelas and five others were busted when San Joaquin County investigators posed as members of the suspects’ Facebook group, where they traded recipes and sometimes sold dishes to each other. One undercover investigator asked to buy some of Ruelas’ homemade ceviche, and she was promptly charged with operating a food facility and business without a license.”
