“Butt Out,” 60% of 18 to 34-Year Olds Tell Federal Government

“Despite a horrendous unemployment rate of 45% for this age group — almost as bad as Spain’s and Greece’s — about 60% of America’s young adults believe that the government should get out of their lives. Even more amazing, half believe that the government is not helping the economy. Two-thirds are favorable to entrepreneurship. These opinions were made clear in a recent poll sponsored by the Young America Foundation. Unfortunately, only 44% think that free markets are positive.”

FDA May Have Age Restrictions On Cups Of Coffee

“If you are a teenager, soon you may not be able to order a cup of Joe. Or a can of Red Bull.  The Food and Drug Administration is considering putting an age limit on products containing caffeine, ranging from energy drinks to a simple cup of coffee. FDA Deputy Commissioner Michael Taylor said enforcing age restrictions would be challenging, the more fundamental questions is whether ‘we should place limits on the amount of caffeine in certain products.’ According to the government, a person should have a maximum of 400 milligrams of caffeine per day.”

Idaho Seizes Medical Marijuana Activists’ Kids

“There have been sporadic local marijuana legalization efforts in past years, and this year, medical marijuana supporters are in the midst of signature-gathering campaign to put an initiative on the ballot. That campaign is led by Compassionate Idaho, some of whose most stalwart and publicly visible members are Lindsey and Josh Rinehart and Sarah Caldwell. But with an incident that began while Caldwell and the Rineharts were away on a retreat, the trio are learning a harsh lesson in hardball pot politics. When they got back home, their kids were gone, and the police and child social services had them.”

2 Virginia Boys Suspended For Using Pencils As Guns

“Two Suffolk second graders have been suspended for making shooting noises while pointing pencils at each other. Media outlets report the 7-year-old boys were suspended for two days for a violation of the Suffolk school system’s zero-tolerance policy on weapons. They were playing with one another in class Friday at Driver Elementary. ‘When I asked him about it, he said, ‘Well I was being a Marine and the other guy was being a bad guy,’’ said Paul Marshall, one of the boys’ fathers. Suffolk Public Schools spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw said a pencil is considered a weapon when it’s pointed at someone in a threatening way and gun noises are made.”

Young people are three times as likely to be unemployed in global economy

“Global youth unemployment has risen to close to its crisis peak and will climb higher as the economic recovery falters, a report by a UN agency has warned. The International Labour Office said the youth unemployment rate had been falling since hitting 12.7% in 2009, but this year had climbed again to stand at 12.6%. The rate is forecast to reach 12.8% by 2018. The ILO paints a grim picture for school leavers and graduates across large parts of the world, saying young people continue to be almost three times more likely than adults to be unemployed.”

The Obamacare Nightmare Will Officially Start October 1

“What’s really going on here is a program that attempts to suck in the youth to pay for the healthcare  of the elderly. It’s insane. On top of that, the first year penalty for not buying insurance is small ($95), so most young will opt out, meaning the revenue to support the structure will have to come from massive premium hikes paid by those older who opt to stay in the system. There is no other way out if Obamacare goes into effect. Well, there is one way out. According to Emanuel:  ‘The president connects with young people, too, so he needs to use that bond and get out there to convince them to sign up for health insurance to help this central part of his legacy.'”

NYPD Police Sergeant Calls For Crackdown On Social Media Dissent

“Using a zero tolerance approach to track domestic terrorists online is the only reasonable way to analyze online threats these days, especially after the Boston Marathon bombing and news that the suspects had subsequently planned to target Times Square in Manhattan, Mullins says. The way law enforcement agencies approach online activity that appears sinister is this: ‘If you’re not a terrorist, if you’re not a threat, prove it,’ he says. ‘This is the price you pay to live in free society right now. It’s just the way it is,’ Mullins adds. That method can result in arrests of teenagers whose online activity may be more aptly characterized as stupid pranks.”

FDA warns manufacturers of possible crackdown on caffeinated candies and snacks

“The US food and drug regulator on Friday called the addition of caffeine to children’s foods like chewing gum and jelly beans ‘dangerous’ and warned of a possible crackdown. Food and Drug Administration deputy commissioner Michael Taylor said the rise in such caffeine-added products outside the beverage industry was ‘very disturbing,’ after candy giant Mars Inc. announced a caffeinated version of its Wrigley gum.  That was added last month to a slew of ‘high energy’ foods on the market sporting substantial added caffeine, including pancake syrups, instant oatmeal, waffles, potato chips, marshmallows and sunflower seeds.”

Colorado legislator wants to treat ‘High Times’ magazine like porn

“A Colorado Senate committee is considering putting marijuana-themed publications like High Times behind the counter.  ‘It’s analogous to the pornography example,’ Rep. Bob Gardner (R-Colorado Springs), who proposed the idea, explained to The Associated Press.  Gardner’s legislation was offered as an amendment to a larger marijuana regulation bill. If approved, stores accessible to those under 21 would be required to place marijuana-themed magazines behind the counter with other adult publications like Playboy.  David Holland, a lawyer for High Times, told the Associated Press the magazine would sue the state if it enacted such a law.”

Health advocates want menthol cigarettes banned

“The American Lung Association and other health groups are asking federal regulators to ban menthol in cigarettes.  The groups says the minty taste is just as effective at getting smokers hooked as other flavorings that were banned under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009.  The Tobacco Control Legal Consortium, a group of researchers, academics, non-profits and government health agencies, filed a citizen petition with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week asking for an investigation into menthol cigarettes.  More than 80 percent of African-Americans smoked the product, according to the groups.”
