“When Officer David Bailey grabbed a 10-year-old student by the back of his head and slammed it into the school cafeteria table, it is safe to say that student was not free to leave. On that afternoon, Bailey decided that his routine beat on the streets of Southeast D.C. extended into the hallways of Moten Elementary School.  Although Bailey was not a trained school resource officer contracted from the Metropolitan Police Department nor one of the three contract officers assigned to Moten at the time, his presence raised no red flags. Regular visits from the police in D.C. Public Schools had become ubiquitous.”

For Pakistanis It’s A Boston Marathon Bombing Nearly Everyday

I can’t let myself think about it for too long without welling up inside.  While my timing in saying what I’m about to say may seem harsh to some, now is the only time to make this point.  For the people of Pakistan the Boston Marathon bombing happens nearly every day. Sometimes it’s a lesser bomb and fewer people are killed or injured. Sometimes it’s a much larger bomb like one example that left nearly seventy children dead at one time (that’s about three times the loss of children that happened in Sandy Hook).  Can you imagine?”

Dad Finds 4th-Grader’s Crayon-Written Paper: ‘I’ll Give Up Constitutional Rights To Be Safer’

“The words are written in crayon, in the haphazard bumpiness of a child’s scrawl.  ‘I am willing to give up some of my constitutional rights in order to be safer or more secure.’  They’re the words that Florida father Aaron Harvey was stunned to find his fourth-grade son had written, after a lesson in school about the Constitution.  Harvey’s son attends Cedar Hills Elementary in Jacksonville, Fla. Back in January, a local attorney came in to teach the students about the Bill of Rights. But after the attorney left, fourth-grade teacher Cheryl Sabb dictated the sentence to part of the class and had them copy it down, he said.”

Government investigating whether free app games target children for commercial gains

“A watchdog has launched an investigation into whether children face ‘unfair pressure’ to spend money on apparently free web and app-based games, it said Friday.  The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is asking parents to get in touch with any examples of possible ‘commercially aggressive’ practices which encourage children to buy virtual currency like coins, gems or fruit, or upgraded membership.  It is unlawful to make a ‘direct exhortation’ to children to make a purchase or persuade their parents to do so under consumer protection regulations.”

“In Springfield, Illinois, Lucinda White was tasered by a cop after her boyfriend’s dispute with another individual over a fender bender went south. The 29 year-old called the police in an effort to settle the dispute, but later the eight months pregnant woman was brought down and tasered. According to the police report White was yelling, cursing and resisting arrest. RT’s Margaret Howell brings us more on the video that has gone viral.”

School forces 25 hungry students to throw away lunches when they couldn’t pay

“A group Massachusetts parents are outraged and at least one worker has been placed on administrative leave after about 25 students Robert J. Coelho Middle School in Attleboro were forced to throw away their lunches over concerns that they could not pay for the food.  Parents said that some students cried and went home hungry.  School officials told The Sun Chronicle that Whitson’s, the contractor responsible for providing lunches, made the decision to stop students from eating their lunch if there was not enough credit in the student’s pre-paid account or they were not able to provide cash for the meal.”

“Anti-Government” Couple on Run With Children; Lost Custody After Pot Charge

“Joshua Michael Hakken and his wife Sharyn Hakken are on the run in Florida after kidnapping their own two children from Sharyn’s mother this morning. Patricia Hauser has had legal custody of her grandchildren, four-year-old Cole and two-year-old Chase, since 2012, when Joshua and Sharyn lost custody for displaying pot in front of their sons at an ‘anti-government rally’ in Louisiana.  There aren’t a lot of details out there right now, so it’s possible that the Hakkens really were a danger to their kids. But it will be just so goddamn awful if all of this is the result of them using some marijuana at a rally in front of their kids.”

“A kindergartner with a new, spiked Mohawk haircut was sent home from a local elementary school this week for violating the district’s dress code.  Keshia Castle said she was told on Wednesday that her 5-year-old son, Ethan Clos, cannot not to come back to Reid Elementary School until he gets rid of his Mohawk, a haircut in which the head is shaved on the sides and only a strip of hair is left on top and down the middle of the scalp.  Superintendent Gregg Morris said the hairstyle was a distraction for students and violates district rules.”
