Turning Off The Spigot In Western Kansas Farmland

“Big irrigated fields of corn in this part of the country are taking water out of underground aquifers much faster than rain or snow can fill those natural reservoirs back up. If Kansas farmers keep pumping water out of the High Plains aquifer as they have in the past, the amount of water they’re able to extract will start to fall in just 10 years or so. They’ll still be able to continue harvesting more corn for another generation, though, because technology will let them use that water more efficiently. But after that, even the latest technology won’t save the corn fields. Irrigated fields will start to disappear, followed by cattle feedlots. The long expansion of agricultural production in western Kansas will end.”

State Threatens to Take Baby Over Homemade Goat Milk Formula

“Alorah Gellerson of Brooklin, Maine made the mistake of telling her doctor about the homemade goat milk formula she proudly and carefully makes for her healthy, happy, three-month old son Carson.  The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) quickly responded when the doctor reported Alorah and that’s when things got messy. The state came in and threatened to take Carson away and put him in foster care unless Alorah followed DHHS orders to go and have the baby examined by a doctor.  Unbelievably, DHHS also mandated an overnight hospital stay and a switch back to store bought GMO commercial formula.”

Monsanto, steaks, and chefs: Intellectual property and food

“In October 2012, the ABA Journal reported on the filing of a patent for a ‘Vegas Strip Steak.’ This particular cut of beef was apparently unknown until it was discovered by an Oklahoma State University meat specialist. While technically ‘unknown,’ the case of the Vegas Strip is really a case of something being undervalued. Surely, experienced butchers, without any specialized knowledge contained in the patent, will know where to find this new cut of beef merely by hearing about it. If the patent is granted, however, anyone who wishes to extract the Vegas Strip from a cow carcass will be legally required to obtain a license from the patent holder.”

The relief they’re requesting is that the state should therefore so empower them.  This is not a case of a ‘bad’ or ‘over-broad’ or ‘improperly applied’ patent. By its very nature, ‘intellectual property’ always represents an assertion on the part of one person of ownership title to the minds, bodies and property of others.”

The FWW report is based on an analysis of diplomatic cables, written between 2005 and 2009 and released in the big Wikileaks document dump of 2010. FWW sums it up: ‘a concerted strategy to promote agricultural biotechnology overseas, compel countries to import biotech crops and foods that they do not want, and lobby foreign governments—especially in the developing world—to adopt policies to pave the way to cultivate biotech crops.'”

FDA launches inquiry about Merck drug Zilmax in cattle feed

“The USDA had no comment and referred questions to the FDA, which does not typically reveal its investigations. Merck said on Friday it was temporarily suspending sales of Zilmax in the United States and Canada, following concerns about the drug, which is given to cattle to increase their weight before slaughter. Last week, Tyson Foods Inc said it would stop accepting beef from Zilmax-fed cattle after it observed animals arriving at its slaughter facilities with signs that they had difficulty walking or moving. Merck on Tuesday revealed a new program to retrain and certify beef producers in administering Zilmax, which had sales of $159 million last year.”

“The Illinois Ag Dept. illegally seized privately owned bees from renowned naturalist, Terrence Ingram, without providing him with a search warrant and before the court hearing on the matter. Behind the obvious violations of his Constitutional rights is Monsanto. Ingram was researching Roundup’s effects on bees, which he’s raised for 58 years.  ‘They ruined 15 years of my research,’ he told Prairie Advocate, by stealing most of his stock. Of note, Illinois beekeepers are going underground after Ingram’s experience and refuse to register their hives, in case the state tries to steal their private property on phony claims.”
