Macedonia Plans to Set up Tax Haven

“Prime Minister Gruevski insisted the plan will not attract criminal money, but will boost employment.  ‘We aim to open an international financial zone on an area of 10 to 20 hectares where we will copy the financial laws from countries such as the United States, Britain or Germany, which will additionally boost its credibility,’ he said.  ‘The regulations will be taken from these top economies and companies that decide to move their HQs here will be offered additional tax and other benefits,’ he explained.  The government plans to give more details about the draft law soon after the constitutional changes are adopted by parliament, which should happen by mid-October.”

“It looks like any other American farmer’s market. Buyers sniff the wares, test weights and compare, while vendors tout their product. But the only produce on offer is cannabis — organic, of course. The Heritage Farmer’s Market — held over the July 4th long weekend — was the first of its kind in Los Angeles. Despite the scorching sun, the line to get in stretched hundreds of meters. The crowd was diverse and multigenerational, interspersed with hippies, rockers, hipsters and some nondescript suburban types. But they all have at least one thing in common — they all have, as required for entry, a doctor’s prescription.”

Why One Walmart in North Dakota Is Paying $17.40 an Hour

“A Walmart store in Williston, N.D., is offering to pay entry-level workers as much as $17.40 per hour—nearly 2½ times the federal minimum wage—in an effort to compete in one of America’s most dynamic labor markets.  The push for a ‘living wage’ has gained momentum in cities such as Seattle recently. But the historic oil boom in North Dakota has provided real, sustained growth in wages and lowered unemployment in North Dakota to 2.6 percent—the lowest statewide rate in the nation—and to less than 1 percent in Williston, which is near the oil fields in the western part of the state.  Median North Dakota family income surpasses the national average by more than $8,000.”

Ironically, while the Ministry of Justice is said to be doing a poor job of ensuring only licensed private firms are allowed to compete with the police, a large chunk of the demand for these firms’ services actually stems from the public sector. Banks are the second largest customer.”
