Online scammers using fake FBI message to demand money

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/FBI-via-AFP.jpg

“The FBI warned computer users on Thursday to ignore a fake message, purportedly from its officers, that freezes people’s screens and demands that they pay a fine for visiting inappropriate websites.  ‘To unlock their machines, users are required to pay a fine using a prepaid money card service,’ it said, accompanied by reports from victims who had paid fines of $200.” [The real problem: anymore, no one would really be surprised at such a demand.]

Reverse-Engineered Irises Look So Real, They Fool Eye-Scanners

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Iris-Image_Galbally-Study11.jpg

“New research being released this week at the Black Hat security conference: a way to recreate iris images that match digital iris codes that are stored in databases and used by iris-recognition systems to identify people. The replica images, they say, can trick commercial iris-recognition systems into believing they’re real images and could help someone thwart identification at border crossings or gain entry to secure facilities protected by biometric systems.” [Security theater, as always. So what are biometrics really about?]

Using WiFi to see through walls

“In any space that has WiFi, you are constantly being bombarded by 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio waves. When these waves hit a moving object, their frequency is altered (the Doppler effect). By carefully “sniffing” the WiFi signals, Woodbridge and Chetty are able to reconstruct an image any objects or humans that are moving on the other side of the wall. The use cases, as you can imagine, are mainly militaristic. The UK Ministry of Defence is already looking into whether this passive radar could be used in urban warfare.”

Hacker finds flaw in hotel locks, can ruin your vacation with $50 DIY gadget

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/screen-shot-2012-07-23-at-11.16.31-am2.jpg

“Cody Brocious, who was recently brought on by Mozilla to work on Boot to Gecko, is giving a presentation at the annual Black Hat conference in Vegas where he demonstrates a method for cracking open keycard locks with a homemade $50 device. The hack only works on locks made by Onity at the moment, and real life testing with a reporter from Forbes only succeeded in opening one of three hotel doors. Still, with between four and five million Onity locks installed across the country (according to the company), that is a lot of vulnerable rooms. The attack is possible thanks to a DC jack on the underside of the lock that’s used to reprogram the doors.”
