Jacob Hornberger: Morsi’s Death Sentence Reminds Us of Our System

hornberger1

“Once Egypt’s military dictatorship ousted Morsi from office and began killing people who protested its tyranny, U.S. officials went silent and so did the U.S. mainstream press. No more ga-ga over democracy.  After providing billions of dollars of armaments and military training to the Egyptian military brutes, which has enabled them to maintain their tyrannical hold on power for decades, the U.S. government is now refortifying the military dictatorship with an additional billion-dollar infusion of weaponry. That should help resupply the bullets they’ve used to kill protestors and maybe even repaint and refurbish the torture chambers after considerable use.”

How Cops’ Extra Rights Shield Misconduct

“Maryland was the first state to pass a LEOBR, in 1972, and by now many states have followed, invariably after lobbying from police unions and associations. Often the bills are sponsored by Republicans, who seem to forget their normal skepticism of public employees as an interest group when uniformed services are involved.  Prison and jail guards are often covered by these laws as well, and scandals of corrections administration (the state-run Baltimore jail had a huge one in which the Maryland LEOBR was implicated) are often hard to investigate because of the law’s barriers. Union contracts often add further layers of insulation from discipline.”

Jacob Hornberger: Judicial Immunity for the Assassins

hornberger1

“In the wake of President Obama’s apology for the killing of two Western hostages in a drone assassination in Pakistan, people might be wondering if it will be possible for surviving family members to recover in a legal action against the assassins for the wrongful death of their loved ones.  The answer is unequivocally no. The reason is that long ago, the judicial branch of the federal government, acquiescing to the overwhelming power of the national-security branch of the government, decided to erect a wall of immunity around CIA assassinations.  Moreover, the federal courts made it clear that the national-security branch was the final determiner of what constitutes ‘national security.'”

Police Deserve No Sympathy Until the Blue Line Breaks

“TIME invited several top police officials to weigh in on the ‘lesson’ in the recent incident in South Carolina in which a police officer, who has since been charged with murder and is facing life in prison, shot an unarmed, 50-year-old man who was running away from him. All made the politically correct comments, but they still do not understand the problem. Consider Chief Flynn’s statement. his officers are ‘depressed’ because they’re ‘judged by the worst example.’ This is exactly how many citizens feel. Police officers routinely judge us ‘with the worst possible presumptions’ but then demand benefit of the doubt for their own actions.”

Obama wants China to stop copying the NSA’s surveillance plans

“President Obama has criticized a Chinese plan to force US tech companies to install backdoors into their products for sale in the country. Without stopping for a moment to consider the phrase about glass houses and stones, he told Reuters that China would have to change its stance if it wanted to do business with the US.  The move comes as part of China’s new anti-terrorism law, which would require firms to keep data about their users inside China, hand over encryption keys and delete terrorism-related content. Worse than that, it would force companies like Google, Microsoft and Apple to poke holes in their software so that local surveillance agencies could spy on their citizens.”

Australia To Start Taxing Bank Deposits

logo3
“The Federal Opposition has accused the Government of breaking an election promise by planning to introduce a tax on bank deposits.  The former Labor Government put forward the policy in 2013 to raise revenue for a fund to protect customers in the event of a banking collapse.  Shadow Assistant Treasurer Andrew Leigh said Treasurer Joe Hockey criticised the proposal at the time. ‘When we put it on the table Joe Hockey said that it was a smash and grab on Australian households just aimed at repairing the budget,’ he said.  The banking industry has raised concerns about a deposit tax, saying it will have to pass the cost back onto customers.”

Virginia lawmaker re-elected despite jail term for sex with 17-year-old

“It’s not every day that a politician with a county jail-issued ankle monitor — accused of having sex with his 17-year-old secretary — campaigns for re-election, and wins.  But that’s exactly what happened Tuesday in the Richmond, Virginia, suburb of Henrico County, where Joseph Morrissey snagged 42% of the vote to win re-election to the state’s House of Delegates, all while serving out a six-month jail sentence, the Richmond-Times Dispatch reported. And he did it while running as an independent. The election was a special one, called to fill Morrissey’s seat after he resigned from office after pleading guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to the Washington Post.”

Sony Corporation Using Amazon Servers To Attack Torrent Sites

“Sony Corporation has launched a counterattack against torrent websites sharing its stolen data. The company is reportedly using Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud services to target torrents released by the hackers who crippled the corporate network of its entertainment arm, Sony Pictures Entertainment, late last month.  Sony is using hundreds of computers throughout Asia to execute denial of service (DDoS) attacks against file-sharing sites that allow people to download its stolen data, according to a report from Re/code published Tuesday. The site says Sony is paying Amazon Web Services (AWS) to carry out the attack.”

Ron Paul: House Chooses New Cold War With Russia

131203122616-ron-paul-bitcoin-620xa1

“Last week the US House voted overwhelmingly in favor of an anti-Russia resolution so full of war propaganda that it rivals the rhetoric from the chilliest era of the Cold War. Ironically, much of the bill condemns Russia for doing exactly what the US government has been doing for years in Syria and Ukraine!  For example, one of the reasons to condemn Russia in the resolution is the claim that Russia is imposing economic sanctions on Ukraine. But how many rounds of sanctions has the US government imposed on Russia for much of the past year? I guess sanctions are only bad when used by countries Washington doesn’t like.”

CIA Torture Report Now Fast-Tracked, Over Republicans’ Objections

“There’s a new incentive to get the report out soon. Republicans take over the Senate in 2015. Many of them have not been impressed with the Democrats’ findings.  ‘The Senate Intelligence Committee today voted to send a one-sided, partisan report to the CIA and White House for declassification,’ Senate Republicans Marco Rubio and James Risch wrote in April, ‘despite warnings from the State Department and our allies indicating that declassification of this report could endanger the lives of American diplomats and citizens overseas and jeopardize U.S. relations with other countries.'”
