White House rejects petition calling for ‘Gun Free Zone’ around Obama, Biden

“President Obama needs armed security because he faces ‘serious, persistent and credible threats on a daily basis,’ the White House said in response to a petition meant to undercut his push for new gun controls. The petition garnered more than 40,000 signatures.  The White House dismissed the call to disarm the president’s security detail, noting that Congress mandated full-time protection of the president after the third assassination of a sitting president in 1901.  ‘Those who are the subject of ongoing threats must receive the necessary and appropriate protection,’ the White House wrote in its response.”

L.A. County Sheriff Awards Carry Permits to Friends, Donors

“Public records show Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, who is known for being stingy with concealed-weapons permits in an anti-gun jurisdiction, may be giving out permits disproportionately to his friends and political supporters and donors.  L.A. Weekly obtained public records for all of the 341 active concealed-weapons permits in addition to the 123 applications for permits that were denied over the last 18 months. The records show that of all the people who were denied a permit, only one had contributed to Baca. Baca’s friends and campaign donors disproportionately make up the list of those who have active permits.”

‘This is hypocrisy’: Sanjay Gupta on the federal medical marijuana patent

“CNN contributor Dr. Sanjay Gupta followed up on his reversal of course regarding medical marijuana in an interview with Anderson Cooper on Tuesday by slamming federal policy regarding medical marijuana. ‘The U.S. holds a patent [on marijuana] on one hand, and on the other hand, same government says it has no medical applications,’ Gupta told Cooper. ‘Journalists are trained to hate hypocrisy. This is hypocrisy. I’ve never seen it quite like this.’ The Department of Health and Human Services, Gupta explained, holds a patent on medical marijuana as ‘a protectant for the brain’, giving voice to an argument made by medical marijuana proponents.”

A congressional speech on the centennial of the Expatriation Act of 1868

220px-GenIsaacBrock3

“In 1868, men stood on the floor of the House and quoted philosophers from the Roman Republic, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands in support of the proposition that emigration and change of citizenship are basic human rights. In 1968, men stood on that same floor and spluttered that Americans who emigrated and changed their citizenship were traitors who should never be allowed to return for a visit.”

Julian Assange: Obama ‘validated’ Snowden as a whistleblower

“WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has called President Barack Obama’s announcement of plans to limit sweeping U.S. government surveillance programs a victory of sorts for fugitive former spy agency contractor Edward Snowden.  ‘Today was a victory of sorts for Edward Snowden and his many supporters,’ Assange said in the statement, which was posted on the WikiLeaks website on Saturday.  Assange accused the U.S. government of ‘stunning’ hypocrisy in its treatment of Snowden while it gave asylum to thousands of dissidents, whistleblowers and political refugees from countries like Russia and Venezuela.”

The American Democracy Pitch

EPJ13

“The neocon brothers-in-arms, Senators John McCain & Lindsey Graham, put out a joint Op-Ed in WaPo this morning. They attempt to pitch ‘Democracy’ to the Egyptian people, who ironically just witnessed their first democratically elected President overthrown in a military coup.  I have a different proposal for the Egyptian people, and it’s called Liberty.  Now, I realize that the prospects of Liberty breaking out in Egypt are close to zero (after all, we’re struggling immensely with the idea catching on here, in the so-called ‘Land of The Free’). But speaking about Liberty can only help.”

Obama Thinks Americans Don’t Need to Know

“The day after his first inauguration, Obama proclaimed ‘a new era of openness in our country.’ Yet, in office, he’s driven state secrecy to new levels of absurdity. You may think that Americans have a right to know who we’re at war with, when the government thinks it can kill them, and whether the executive branch considers the personal data of all Americans “relevant” to terrorism investigations — but this administration begs to differ. As far as it’s concerned, you can’t handle the truth.”

HBO says Game of Thrones ‘piracy’ is better than an Emmy

“According to Time Warner CEO Alan Bewkes the ‘piracy’ buzz around Game of Thrones is a good thing, so good that it’s better than an entertainment industry award. The firm was talking about its latest financial results when it was asked about the so-called ‘piracy’ problem. ‘I have to admit it, I think you’re right. The much discussed fantasy series is HBO’s most popular TV show, and if you go to people who are watching it without subs, it’s a tremendous word of mouth thing,’ he said, according to the Game of Thrones website White Harbour.  In April, HBO programming chief Michael Lombardo said that ‘piracy’ should be taken as a compliment.”

Do We Really Want a Cold War II?

“In three years, the USSR gave up an empire, a third of its territory, and half its people.  And it extended to us a hand of friendship.  How did we respond? We pushed NATO right up to Russia’s borders, bringing in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria, even former Soviet republics Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. To cut Moscow out of the Caspian Sea oil, we helped build a pipeline through two former Soviet republics. In the Boris Yeltsin decade, the 1990s, U.S. hustlers colluded with local oligarchs in looting Russia of her natural resources.  When columnist Tony Blankley visited Russia, he was astounded at the hostility he encountered.”

‘Slipping Back Into Cold War Thinking’

“Russia’s loss is Sweden’s gain: On Wednesday, the White House revealed that US President Obama will visit Stockholm on September 4-5, on his way to the G-20 summit in St. Petersburg. ‘Sweden is a close friend and partner to the United States,’ said the press secretary in a statement.  And right now, Russia isn’t. Obama was originally planning to be in Moscow on these dates for talks with President Vladimir Putin — but the Russian leader has been given the brush-off. It seems the Kremlin’s decision to grant asylum to fugitive US spy agency contractor Edward Snowden was the final straw.”
