“The Wall Street Journal reports that the smart shelves are the latest example of the ‘Internet of Things,’ which outfits everyday objects with sensors to help businesses learn more about their customers and products. This burgeoning field could generate $1.9 trillion by 2020, predicts Gartner Inc., and already puts sensors in cars, clothes and trash bins. The smart shelves would use sensors based on Microsoft’s Kinect for Windows technology to study shoppers’ facial structure and other characteristics to determine their age and gender. Then shoppers, if they linger long enough, might see a video advertisement targeted toward their perceived demographic.”

The Dark Side of the iPhone 5S Lines
“The scene at the apple store just before the phones release was also a sight i’d never experienced. Beyond excitement it was closer to hysteria. Encouraged by hundreds of equally hysterical employees in blue shirts. At the peak of that hysteria i stopped and reminded myself what the impetus was for all of this; a new phone. That warranted a head shake and an eye roll.”
Arkansas mayor fires rifle seized by police, shattering city hall window
“An Arkansas mayor admitted this week that he had accidentally fired a rifle inside city hall, shattering a window. Flippin James ‘J.J.’ Hudson told the Baxter Bulletin that nine days after he fired the rifle that had been seized by police, the incident had been ‘all been taken care of; it’s all been cleaned up.’ ‘I’m not going to have any further comment on it,’ he said. But according to the paper, the shards of glass could still be seen over the entrance of city hall and the window had still not been repaired.”
Why states shouldn’t cash in on Super Bowl odds
“Americans gambled an estimated $10 billion on various aspects of the 2013 sports spectacle – from picking the winner to whether Alicia Keys will flub the words of the national anthem. New Jersey would like a cut of that $10 billion and more of the money now regularly wagered privately on sporting events. Last year, the state approved a new law to start doing just that. But on Feb. 1, the Obama administration filed a court brief to block the state action. And on Feb. 14, a federal judge will hear arguments on whether New Jersey – along with other states eager to follow its example – can be allowed to ignore a 1992 federal law against sports betting.”
Gitmo defendant’s lawyers: CIA gave ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ makers more info than us
“The CIA cooperated with the makers of the Hollywood movie about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, and has acknowledged one character was ‘modeled after’ Connell’s client, Ammar al Baluchi, an alleged al Qaeda money mover also known as Ali Abdul Aziz Ali. He is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s nephew. The movie showed interrogators stringing up the Ammar character with a rope, forcing him to wear a dog collar, waterboarding him and stuffing him into a coffin-like box. The CIA has not acknowledged using those techniques on Baluchi but has admitted using them on other prisoners.”
125 shopping days left: Retailers start Xmas deals
“Even before the school bells are ringing for many families, retailers are sounding sleigh bells. Yes, that’s right. With 120-plus shopping days left, stores are already talking up their holiday offers. You might not be feeling the time pressure yet, but retailers are. Success in the fourth quarter is often key to annual performance, and in tough economic times the competition for customer dollars is fierce, said Dave Cheatham, managing principal of Velocity Retail Group. ‘Retailers are determined not to be left on the sidelines,’ he said. ‘They’re reinventing the rules on how to do holiday shopping.'”
Human Intelligence is Slowly Declining: Genetics Or Food?
“Researchers from Harvard have found that a substance rampant in the nation’s water supply, fluoride, is lowering IQ and dumbing down the population. One study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that pesticides, which are rampant among the food supply, are creating lasting changes in overall brain structure — changes that have been linked to lower intelligence levels and decreased cognitive function. UCLA researchers found that HFCS may be damaging the brain functions of consumers worldwide, sabotaging learning and memory. In fact, the official release goes as far to say that high-fructose corn syrup can make you ‘stupid’.”

Bill Bonner: Thank You, TSA, NSA, FBI, and CIA!
“Respect for authority is cyclical. And presently, the authorities are enjoying an upswing. People look to them to get things they can’t get on their own. Health care paid for by someone else… a retirement they can’t afford… and foolish pride they don’t deserve. U.S. troops patrol the streets of towns we never heard of… American drones wipe out families we never met… the NSA listens in on the world’s conversations… Yes, thanks to the NSA, TSA, CIA, IRS, FBI, and Pentagon, no sparrow can fall anywhere in the world without it setting off alarms in America’s command centers.”
After destroying newspapers, the Internet is now poised to disrupt television
“Having turned print media upside down, the Internet now is disrupting television, forcing broadcasters to adapt to tablets and video-on-demand to hold onto views and advertisers. ‘The gap between what consumers want and the way the industry is delivering it has grown so big that the industry now has to start to make some moves,’ Forrester Research analyst Jim Nail told AFP. For the first time this year, American adults are spending more time with the Internet than in front of television sets — about five hours a day compared to 4.5, according to a study in eMarketer this month. Internet giant Google has joined the party with Chromecast.”
State Of Mind: The Psychology of Control
“Are we controlled? To what extent and by whom? What does it mean for humanity’s future? From cradle to grave our parents, peers, institutions and society inform our values and behaviors but this process has been hijacked. State Of Mind examines the science of control that has evolved over generations to keep us firmly in place so that dictators, power brokers and corporate puppeteers may profit from our ignorance and slavery. From the anvil of compulsory schooling to media and entertainment, we are kept in perpetual bondage to the ideas that shape our actions.”
