‘Let it be an arms race’: Donald Trump on nuclear expansion

“The president-elect Donald Trump has stunned nuclear weapons experts by appearing to call for a renewed arms race on his Twitter feed and in a TV interview.  ‘Let it be an arms race,’ the president in waiting was reported to have told Mika Brzezinski, co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe programme, in an early phone call on Friday.  According to Brzezinski he went on to say: ‘We will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all.’  The incendiary comment followed a tweet on Thursday in which Trump threatened to preside over a major ramping up of the US nuclear arsenal.”

Greek protesters lob petrol bombs in Athens during Obama visit

“In a separate protest in the northern city of Thessaloniki, protesters burned a U.S. flag.  The visit comes only two days before the anniversary of a bloody 1973 student revolt that helped topple the 1967-1974 military junta which was backed by the U.S. government.  Obama, who will be succeeded in January by Donald Trump, arrived in Greece on Tuesday on his last foreign tour as president of the United States.”

Was World War 2 a “good war?”

“Too many Americans assume that every conflict must have a good side and a bad side.  Not true. More often than not both sides are bad. That was certainly the case both in WW1 and with Chiang Kai-shek versus Japan.  Adults realize that some situations are unfixable. You just have to wait them out because any effort to intervene just makes matters worse. Sadly…  The closer you look, the worse the case against the U.S. war with Japan becomes. If you’re going to pick a fight with someone, as FDR did with Japan, and then sacrifice vast wealth and innocent young lives to that purpose, you had better make damned sure you leave things better than you found them. But the exact opposite happened in the case of the Pacific War.”

US secretly sent plane with $400 million in cash to Iran

“President Barack Obama approved the $400 million transfer, which was the first payment of a $1.7 billion settlement resolving claims at an international tribunal at The Hague over a failed arms deal under the time of the Shah. The Iranians were seeking more than $10 billion at arbitration.  Because existing US sanctions ban American dollars from being used in a transaction with Iran, officials said the money was procured from central banks in Switzerland and the Netherlands, and an unmarked cargo plane loaded with wooden pallets of Swiss francs, euros and other currencies were flown to Iran.”

Did Saudi Arabia murder American citizens? Redacted doc could answer

“The feds have mostly declassified the 28-pages that implicate Saudi Arabia in the 9/11 attacks.  Now I want all the redactions removed too, except for any that might mention an undercover U.S. agent. I also want all other files related to potential Saudi involvement declassified.   Justice demands this. The evidence revealed in the 28-pages is damning. It’s chilling to think that one of the possible actors in the 9/11 crimes was both a close friend of the President and also a frequent guest in the White House.  There’s too much smoke. There appears to be a fire. The American people deserve to know the truth. Did Saudi Arabia murder American citizens?”

Trump in Line to Receive Top U.S. Intelligence Secrets

“Trump has at times questioned the U.S. role in NATO, called Russian President Vladimir Putin ‘a strong leader,’ and said he’s ‘in that camp’ that believes torture yields valuable information from detainees.  The Democratic front-runner, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is a veteran recipient of government secrets, although Republicans contend she broke the law because classified information was included in messages on her private e-mail system. The FBI is investigating the matter.”

Revoke Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize

20131002_Cato1

“Obama now has the ignominious distinction of being continuously at war longer than any other American president in U.S. history.   Christof Heyns, the United Nations special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings, summary or arbitrary executions, told a conference in Geneva that President Obama’s drone strike program threatens 50 years of international law by encouraging other states to violate long-standing human rights standards.  After eight years of continuous warfare, the Nobel Committee should take another unprecedented action: It should revoke Obama’s peace prize and demand repayment of the prize money.”

U.S. bailout places ‘Puerto Rico’s democracy at risk’

“The U.S. Senate is considering a bill called the Puerto Rico Assistance Act of 2015. It offers minor assistance: a temporary reduction in payroll taxes and a ‘development fund’ of $3 billion.  But the real purpose of this bill is the installation of a six-member Financial Control Authority. That authority, if it gets the chance, will rule over Puerto Rico. Completely. What this legislation contemplates is beyond extraordinary; it is essentially the destruction of whatever semblance of genuine democracy currently rules the island. According to the bill, five members will be appointed by the U.S. President. The sixth will be the Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, who will also serve as Chairman.”

David Stockman, Christmas 2015—–Why There Is No Peace On Earth

“The real threat to peace circa 1990 was that Pax Americana would not go away quietly in the night.  In fact, during the past 25 years Imperial Washington has lost all memory that peace was ever possible at the end of the cold war. Today it is as feckless, misguided and bloodthirsty as were Berlin, Paris, St. Petersburg, Vienna and London in August 1914.  The modern Warfare State has been the incubator of American imperialism since the Cold War, and is now proving itself utterly invulnerable to fiscal containment, even in the face of a $19 trillion national debt.  So 101 years after the Christmas truces along the Western Front there is still no peace on earth.”

Seymour M. Hersh on US intelligence sharing in the Syrian war

“The Joint Chiefs felt that a direct challenge to Obama’s policy would have ‘had a zero chance of success’. So in the autumn of 2013 they decided to take steps against the extremists without going through political channels, by providing US intelligence to the militaries of other nations, on the understanding that it would be passed on to the Syrian army and used against the common enemy, Jabhat al-Nusra and Islamic State. Once the flow of US intelligence began, Germany, Israel and Russia started passing on information about the whereabouts and intent of radical jihadist groups to the Syrian army; in return, Syria provided information about its own capabilities and intentions.”
