Obama administration authorizes $1.83-billion arms sale to Taiwan

“The Obama administration formally notified Congress on Wednesday of a $1.83-billion arms sale package for Taiwan, including two frigates, anti-tank missiles, amphibious assault vehicles and other equipment, drawing an angry response from China.  The authorization, which Reuters on Monday reported was imminent, came a year after Congress passed legislation approving the sale. It is the first such major arms sale to Taiwan in more than four years.  The White House said there was no change in the longstanding U.S. ‘one China’ policy.  Past U.S. weapons sales to Taiwan have attracted strong condemnation in China, which considers Taiwan a renegade province.”

U.S. Dropped 23,144 Bombs on Muslim-Majority Countries in 2015

“Council of Foreign Relations resident skeptic Micah Zenko recently tallied up how many bombs the United States has dropped on other countries and the results are as depressing as one would think. Zenko figured that since Jan. 1, 2015, the U.S. has dropped around 23,144 bombs on Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia, all countries that are majority Muslim.  The chart, provided by the generally pro-State Department think tank, puts in stark terms how much destruction the U.S. has leveled on other countries. Whether or not one thinks such bombing is justified, it’s a blunt illustration of how much raw damage the United States inflicts on the Muslim world.”

“Donald Trump is making good on his promise to ‘counterpunch’ anyone who crosses him — even if it means taking on the entire United Kingdom.  The United Kingdom’s proposed Donald Trump ban arose after Trump’s widely criticized call for a Muslim ban in the United States.  A petition circulating in the U.K. has earned more than 560,000 signatures calling for Trump to be turned away from Britain’s borders.  The Trump Organization warned that were the U.K. to take any action against its namesake, it would ‘force The Trump Organization to immediately end [investments in Turnberry] and all future investments we are currently contemplating in the United Kingdom.'”

Trump Promises Death For Killing A Cop, Endorses Police Militarization

“Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump received the endorsement of a New England union that represents police and corrections officers Thursday evening, and said that, as president, he would call for the death penalty for any person who kills a cop.  Trump also expressed support for local police departments using military equipment, which the Obama administration has worked to curb following complaints about officers using riot gear and armored vehicles to confront protesters in Ferguson, Missouri.  ‘We’ve got to let our police have the finest equipment and the finest training and if we don’t,’ he said, ‘we’re making a tremendous mistake as a country.'”
