“For now, Trump seems more like comedy than reality. I want to laugh about what he said, like reading a comic-book version of Franco, Mussolini, or Hitler. And truly I did laugh, as when he denounced the existence of tech support in India that serves American companies (‘how can it be cheaper to call people there than here?’ — as if he still thinks that long-distance charges apply).  Let’s hope this laughter doesn’t turn to tears.  So, what does Trump actually believe? He does have a philosophy, though it takes a bit of insight and historical understanding to discern it.”

Grading the Presidential Candidates on Marijuana Policy

“The candidates were graded on actions they have taken and statements they have made indicating their support for ending pot prohibition, allowing legal access to medical marijuana and defending states’ rights to set their own marijuana policies.  While Democratic candidates found themselves in the middle of the road (with grades ranging from B to D), Republicans were all over the letter-grade spectrum, with Rand Paul pulling down an A- (it seems you’d have to actually support legalization to get an A grade from MPP), and two GOP candidates, Chris Christie and Rick Santorum getting flunked with Fs.”

Lindsey Graham: Send 20,000 Troops to Iraq, Syria to Defeat ISIS

“GOP presidential candidate and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham has called for sending 20,000 troops to Iraq and Syria to defeat the Islamic State.  Graham believes the administration should increase the number of military advisers in Iraq from 3,500 to 10,000 to include special operations forces to help the Iraqi military on the front lines and improve the accuracy of airstrikes.  He said that a similar number of troops should be sent to Syria to assist regional forces and combat the Islamic State (ISIS). He reserved particular criticism for Hillary Clinton and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, both of whom have suggested that the United States could avoid deploying troops to the region.”

U.S. House defeats bid to withdraw troops from Iraq

“The House voted 288-139 to defeat the concurrent resolution, which would have required Obama to remove the troops within 30 days, or by the end of 2015 if the administration determined it was not safe to do so within the 30-day timeframe.  The ‘yes’ votes were cast by 120 Democrats and 19 Republicans, while the ‘no’s’ came from 222 Republicans and 66 Democrats.  The lawmakers said they hoped their introduction of the measure, allowed under the War Powers Authority, would lead to a broader debate on a formal authorization for the use of military force for the campaign against Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria.”

“The United States already has by far the per capita largest prison population of any developed country but I am probably one of the few Americans who on this Independence Day would like to see a lot more people in prison, mostly drawn from politicians and senior bureaucrats who have long believed that their status makes them untouchable, giving them license to steal and even to kill. The sad fact is that while whistleblowers have been imprisoned for revealing government criminality, no one in the federal bureaucracy has ever actually been punished for the crimes of torture, kidnapping and assassination committed during the George W. Bush and Barack H. Obama presidencies.”

Obama Bans Certain Military Gear From Local Police

“In a surprise move aimed at tamping down the backlash against military tactics by local police forces, President Obama today announced he is banning the transfer of certain military gear considered ‘not appropriate’ for local policing. The ban will include tracked armored vehicles, grenade launchers and bayonets. Obama said his working group had concluded there was a ‘substantial risk of misusing’ such gear.  ‘We’ve seen how militarized gear can sometimes give people the feeling like there’s an occupying force as opposed to a force that’s part of the community,’ Obama added in comments later in the day.”

“The Republicans could criticize Hillary for her much more important lapses in judgment in advocating the disastrous American use of force on Iraq and Libya in order to take out their respective leaders. Both interventions violated international law and common sense and have turned into chaotic messes that have bred more terrorism. She could also be disparaged for her support for the ineffectual escalation of the Afghan War, the expansion of Obama’s illegal drone wars, and the aborted plans to conduct air strikes against Syria. But all of these criticisms of Hillary’s policy stances and operational diplomatic security lack the sensational ‘gotcha’ that our current presidential campaigns require.”

Seymour Hersh defends his blockbuster bin Laden story

The veracity of his own reporting was a topic that seemed only to exasperate him.  ‘You’re talking about someone who was a freelance reporter in 1969 and wrote about massacring hundreds of people in Vietnam for an anti-war news agency,’ Hersh said. ‘My God, you don’t think I had trouble then?’  He’s irritated at what he sees as a public obsession with where and how his bin Laden report had been published. ‘It’s not a press story — it’s a story about what the government does,’ Hersh said. ‘If the questions are about the press, I can’t help you.'”

In 2012, they spent over $764 million. To put this in perspective, Kraft Food Groups and H.J. Heinz spent $583 million on advertising in 2014.  For the coming 2016 race, there is zero question candidates will be spending even more.  The upcoming run for the White House will break, by far, every spending and fundraising record there is. We could see two candidates raise over $1 billion, when not even one candidate has ever accomplished the feat.”
