Investigation Sought On Obama’s No-Bid Contract for Smallpox Drug [2011]

“A top Senate Democrat has requested an investigation into the Obama administration’s awarding a $433 million no-bid contract to the maker of an experimental smallpox vaccine.  Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., says the five-year contract from the Department of Health and Human Services to Siga Technologies –  a New York company run by a major Democratic donor — raises questions about a conflict of interest and the potential waste of precious taxpayer funds.  In a letter to HHS inspector general Daniel Levinson on Monday, McCaskill expressed worry over the hefty price of the drug (reportedly $255 per dose) because the company had not been not forced to compete for the contract.”

Obomber: US may be forced to “wipe out” Syrian air defenses

“Still looking to prove himself worthy of the Nobel peace prize which he so greatly treasures, Obomber is reported to have implicitly threatened the Syrian government. Via the NY Times:  ‘He made clear the intricacy of the situation, though, as he contemplated the possibility that Mr. Assad might order his forces to fire at American planes entering Syrian airspace. If he dared to do that, Mr. Obama said he would order American forces to wipe out Syria’s air defense system, which he noted would be easier than striking ISIS because its locations are better known. He went on to say that such an action by Mr. Assad would lead to his overthrow, according to one account.'”

U.S. to Commit $500 Million, Deploy 3,000 Troops in Ebola Fight

“The unprecedented response will include the deployment of 3,000 U.S. military forces and more than $500 million in defense spending drawn from funding normally used for efforts like the war in Afghanistan, senior administration officials outlined Monday. Obama has called America’s response to the disease a ‘national-security priority,’ with top foreign policy and defense officials leading the government’s efforts.  The officials said Obama believes that in order to best contain the disease, the U.S. must ‘lead’ the global response effort. In the CDC’s largest deployment in response to an epidemic, more than 100 officials from the agency are currently on the ground and $175 million has been allocated.”

Senate approves Obama request to arm, train Syrian rebels

“The Senate on Thursday easily approved a $1 trillion government-funding bill that gives President Obama new authority to battle the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). While the stopgap bill will prevent a government shutdown on Oct. 1, the vote will be remembered for a controversial provision that allows Obama to start a new training program for rebel fighters in Syria.  Anti-war liberals and some conservatives balked at that request, with some fearing the vote represented a dangerous march to war. Lawmakers skeptical of helping the rebels are fearful that it could be difficult, if not impossible, to ensure the weapons do not end up in the wrong hands.”

Obama Follows Bush’s Iraq Playbook

“Obama speaks of protecting the American people. He means Americans both abroad and at home. Americans of course are free to travel anywhere. If the U.S. government is to have the power to protect or avenge them abroad, it will have to be able to exercise military power globally. Such imperial power, which the government has long exercised, should disturb peace- and freedom-loving Americans precisely because it creates the potential for perpetual war, invites retaliatory terrorism, and requires high government spending and borrowing. It may be taken for granted that a president can go to war when an American is killed overseas, but that kind of power is too dangerous to accept meekly.”

NC congressman presses for release of censored 9/11 report pages

Bush classified 28 pages of the official report related to Saudi connections to the attacks, citing national security concerns, and President Obama has allowed the classification to continue.  But U.S. Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) has read the 28 pages — and he’s now working to get them declassified. Last year Jones was interviewed about the resolution by former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) and discussed how he came to read the redacted pages in a heavily guarded room beneath the U.S. Capitol. In order to read the material, lawmakers must sign an oath not to reveal details about the contents.”

The government calls for more subprime lending—then prosecutes it

“President Obama himself has urged banks to ease lending standards so more people can buy cars and homes. Yet subprime loans carry a stigma because of abuses that occurred during the housing bubble of the early 2000s.  The government is sending mixed messages to banks and consumers. Tight credit has been one of the things holding back spending, prompting Obama and other policymakers to plead for looser lending standards. Yet the government is now threatening to punish banks that lend to less creditworthy consumers. If subprime loans were called second-chance loans or opportunity loans instead, maybe prosecutors would show less interest.”
