With Affordable Care Act, Canceled Policies for New York Professionals

“Many in New York’s professional and cultural elite have long supported President Obama’s health care plan. But now, to their surprise, thousands of writers, opera singers, music teachers, photographers, doctors, lawyers and others are learning that their health insurance plans are being canceled and they may have to pay more to get comparable coverage, if they can find it.  Some have received notices already; others, whose plans have not yet expired, will soon receive letters in the mail. It is unclear exactly how many New Yorkers are affected; according to state health officials, as many as 400,000 independent practitioners get health insurance through job-related group plans.”

Obama Amends the Constitution By Statute

“The PPACA authorizes the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to make a proposal if the IPAB board does not do so by a set date. As with the board, if Congress does not provide an alternative to that proposal, then the Secretary is authorized to implement it unilaterally, and with appropriated funds if necessary. (Presumably, the funds would come from Medicare.) In short, a panel of 15 experts will assume the unprecedented power of making federal law and changing laws previously enacted by Congress. Or one woman will: Secretary of HHS Kathleen Sebelius.”

“Close Guantánamo Prison!” — Karzai’s Ultimatum to Obama

“Afghanistan’s leader, Hamid Karzai, has told Obama that he will not sign an agreement that will let Obama keep troops in Afghanistan unless Obama agrees to close the prison on the island of Cuba.  Here is his threat. Either Obama does what he told the voters in 2008 that he would do if they elected him, or else Karzai will not sign an agreement to let Obama keep American troops in Afghanistan after 2014, as Obama says he is ready and willing to do.  So, Obama has a choice: (1) close the 12-year Bush-Cheney prison or (2) end the 12-year Bush-Cheney war.”

Filibuster change clears way for White House to stack ObamaCare panel

“President Obama will have an easier time filling the 15 slots on a controversial Medicare-cutting board, thanks to Harry Reid’s successful bid last week to overhaul the Senate’s filibuster rules.  The Senate Democratic leader, in a pre-holiday surprise, last week corralled Democrats to drastically change how the Senate deals with presidential nominees. Instead of taking 60 votes to confirm most appointees, it will now take just 51.  That means, as long as Democrats are in power, it smoothes the way for Obama to appoint people to the panel established under ObamaCare to hold down Medicare costs.”

Small business Obamacare online enrollment delayed a year

“The Obama administration today announced a one year delay of online enrollment for small businesses looking to purchase health coverage through federal Obamacare exchanges, another high-profile setback for HealthCare.gov.  It’s the second delay for online small business enrollment, which the administration had said would begin this month.  The announcement just before Thanksgiving is the latest in a series of delays and miscalculations for the president’s signature domestic legislation. On July 2 — also just before a holiday —it delayed the employer mandate for a year. Small businesses with fewer than 50 workers are exempt from the requirement to cover them.”

Obama visits family of slain TSA officer

“President Barack Obama visited Monday with the family of TSA officer Gerardo Hernandez, who was killed at Los Angeles International Airport earlier this month.  The President also met with Tony Grigsby and James Speer — two other TSA officers who were wounded in the November 1 shooting incident.  A gunman stormed a terminal at the airport on November 1, killing Hernandez and injuring several others.  Hernandez is the first TSA officer to die in the line of duty.  Officers shot suspect Paul Ciancia multiple times during the assault.  He is in the custody of U.S. marshals, charged with the murder of a federal officer and commission of violence at an international airport.”

The decline – from 8.1 percent in August to 7.8 percent in September – might not have been all it seemed. The numbers, according to a reliable source, were manipulated. And the Census Bureau, which does the unemployment survey, knew it. Just two years before the presidential election, the Census Bureau had caught an employee fabricating data that went into the unemployment report, which is one of the most closely watched measures of the economy.”

Why Obama Can’t Just Uncancel All Those Insurance Plans

“State insurance commissioners are not enthusiastic. They’re the people who are actually in charge of approving the plans and rates that private insurers offer in each state. The regulators association threw tepid water on the plan in a statement Thursday, saying the decision ‘threatens to undermine the new market, and may lead to higher premiums and market disruptions in 2014 and beyond.’ These officials can nix the idea at the state level, as Washington state’s regulator already has.  Even if it works, the fix is not a fix—it’s a delay. Whenever the administration does start enforcing that piece of the law, people are going to get another round of cancellation letters.”
