Notwithstanding their crimes, they have prospered. Bush and Cheney were reelected. All of the others have gone on to live as seemingly respectable members of society. They occupy prestigious positions and move about freely; they receive public honors; many people treat them as praiseworthy figures. None of them were ever indicted by a U.S. court. In short, they have got off scot-free.”

To say it was fought exclusively due to oil is an oversimplification. But the fact that oil is a major factor in every Western military action in the Middle East is so self-evident that it’s astonishing that it’s even considered debatable, let alone some fringe and edgy idea. Yet few claims were more stigmatized in the run-up to the Iraq War, and after, than the view that oil was a substantial factor. In 2006, George Bush instructed us that there was a ‘responsible’ way to criticize the US war effort in Iraq, and an ‘irresponsible’ way to do so, and he helpfully defined the boundaries.”

Rand Paul: ‘I can’t see sending my son to fight on the same side as al Qaeda’

“Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., sharply opposed American military action in Syria on Fox News Thursday night, demanding that President Obama get congressional approval should he choose to act. Paul said that Obama would probably decide against a Congressional vote to avoid a similar defeat as David Cameron did in British Parliamant.  Paul also explained that he had difficulty seeing any American interests in the Syrian conflict. Under Sharia law, Paul noted, Christians would be persecuted for blasphemy, citing a woman in Pakistan who was jailed for blasphemy after she drank from a cup shared by Muslim workers. ‘That is not something I want to send our boys and girls to die for,’ Paul added.”

U.S. military officers have deep doubts about impact, wisdom of Syria strike

“Having assumed for months that the United States was unlikely to intervene militarily in Syria, the Defense Department has been thrust onto a war footing that has made many in the armed services uneasy, according to interviews with more than a dozen military officers ranging from captains to a four-star general. Former and current officers, many with the painful lessons of Iraq and Afghanistan on their minds, said the main reservations concern the potential unintended consequences of launching cruise missiles against Syria. Some questioned the use of military force as a punitive measure and suggested that the White House lacks a coherent strategy.”

UN orders its inspectors out of Syria over fears of U.S. air strike

“UN weapons inspectors have been ordered to leave Syria early amid mounting anticipation of US-led military strikes. The inspectors had not been due to deliver their findings for a week at least, with the analysis of samples a painstaking task. The demand for a rushed early assessment reflects the fraught atmosphere at the UN triggered by US threats to launch punitive air strikes within days. The accelerated departure of the UN weapons inspectors was reminiscent of similar hasty exit from Iraq more than a decade ago, after receiving a tip-off from western intelligence agencies that US air strikes against Saddam Hussein’s regime were imminent.”

Alan Grayson on Syria strike: Military-industrial complex wants it, Americans don’t

It Looks Like Obama Miscalculated

This suggests that Obama miscalculated and acted hastily, and that suggests that he was anxious to find an excuse for intervening on behalf of the rebels, who have been losing ground for months now. It also indicates government in-fighting. The intelligence officials are trying to protect their turf. They do not want again to be pressured into or accused of fixing the intelligence around the pre-decided policy. They do not want another case of being blamed, as occurred with the WMD’s absence in Iraq.”
