Sessions/Trump Pull Off an Amazing Feat — Making the DEA Look Reasonable

“The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has never been known as a forward-thinking place when it comes to drug and crime policy, but these days, the hide-bound drug fighting agency is coming off as much more reasonable on drugs than its bosses, President Trump and Attorney General Sessions.”

Bose accused of spying on end users, data mining via headphone app

“According to plaintiff Kyle Zak, the spying began when Bose released a mandatory Bose Connect application that all users must install to ‘fully operate its wireless products.’ What Bose didn’t draw much attention to, according to the suit, is that Bose Connect collects data on all the musical content or audio books that you listen to on its headphones. As the suit notes, this is a major invasion of privacy.”

Trump Adviser Accidentally Leaks His Own Homeland Security Plan

“There is a certain irony in the fact that Trump’s rumored frontrunner to lead the Department of Homeland Security just leaked what appears to be his homeland security plan.  The first item, ‘Bar the Entry of Potential Terrorists,’ calls for the reinstatement of National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), a controversial post-9/11 program that required men over 16 years entering the United States from roughly two dozen countries deemed at ‘high risk’ for terrorism to be registered.  There appear to be additional references to the wall Trump has promised to build along the U.S.-Mexico border, the Patriot Act, and the National Voter Registration Act.”

Linux bug leaves USA Today, other top sites vulnerable to serious hijacking attacks

“The vulnerability resides in the design and implementation of RFC 5961, a relatively new Internet standard that’s intended to prevent certain classes of hacking attacks. In fact, the protocol is designed in a way that it can easily open Internet users to so-called blind off-path attacks, in which hackers anywhere on the Internet can detect when any two parties are communicating over an active transmission control protocol connection. Attackers can go on to exploit the flaw to shut down the connection, inject malicious code or content into unencrypted data streams, and possibly degrade privacy guarantees provided by the Tor anonymity network.”

Botnet formed of 25,000 malware-riddled surveillance cameras

“The unusual 25,000-strong botnet was apparently spotted by US security outfit Sucuri when it investigated an online assault against an ordinary jewelry store.  The shop’s website was flooded offline after drowning in 35,000 junk HTTP requests per second. When Sucuri attempted to thwart the network tsunami, the botnet stepped up its output and dumped more than 50,000 HTTP requests per second on the store’s website.  When the security biz dug into the source of the duff packets, it found they were all coming from internet-connected CCTV cameras – devices that had been remotely hijacked by miscreants to attack other systems.”

With Every Call for Encryption Restrictions, Officials Make Its Own Case

“When Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, and President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron declare war on communications privacy, they fail to understand that they are the menace against which the people around them have been armoring their messages to one another.  If American tech giants are legally barred from serving their customers, software developed by companies and independent developers around the world, intentionally designed to thwart U.S. policymakers, will easily fill the gap.”

Trump Tried to Bulldoze an Elderly Widow’s Home to Build a Limo Parking Lot

“Donald Trump is leading the GOP primary polls with 24 percent.  In 1994, Trump got Atlantic City to condemn Vera Coking’s home so that he could build limo parking for his Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. The Institute for Justice took on Trump in one of its first big eminent domain cases:  She was able to beat Trump and the city government and win the right to keep her property.  Coking moved to a retirement home in 2010, having lived almost 50 years in her Atlantic City home. Coking’s grandson finally sold the house in July 2014; less than two months later, the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino closed for lack of business.”

Toyota Camry Tops Ford F-150 as the Most American Made Car

“Cars with at least 75 percent domestic content are becoming an endangered species, and for the first time in the American-Made Index’s nine-year history, the list has fewer than 10 cars.  The Toyota Camry took the top spot this year, as 2014’s top vehicle — the Ford F-150 — fell below 75 percent in domestic-parts content with its 2015 model-year redesign.  It’s not that automakers are slowing U.S. production. If anything, the opposite is true: Excluding heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles, automakers assemble 101 models in this country for the 2015 model year, from Chevrolet sedans to BMW SUVs. What is shrinking is the percent of overall domestic-parts content.”

Taxis on Las Vegas Strip go idle in protest of Uber

“Dozens of taxi drivers parked their cabs and instead took to the Las Vegas Strip sidewalk today to protest the arrival of Uber and the disastrous effect drivers said it would have on their livelihoods.  The protest was organized by drivers from the Industrial, Technical and Professional Employees Union Local 4873 and took place on a sidewalk in front of Caesars Palace for about two hours.  Although many drivers who participated were on the clock and supposed to be on the roads, they won’t be subject to discipline from Yellow Checker Star because the protest is protected as a union-related activity.”
