Admit It. You Just Want Your Own Dictator

“Many of the same people anxious about the authoritarian overtones of Trump’s appeal were unconcerned about the intense adulation that adoring crowds showered on Barack Obama in 2008, though the spectacle featured similarly troubling signs—the iconography, the messianic messaging and the implausible promises of government-produced comfort and safety. Just as President Trump fans will judge every person on how nice or mean he or she is to Trump, so, too, those rooting against Obama were immediately branded unpatriotic or racist.  Obama’s inevitable failure to live up to the hype has had many repercussions—and none of them healthy.”

Jeffrey Tucker: Two Faces, One Totalitarianism

“What does totalitarianism mean? Ludwig von Mises in 1919 described it as the ideology that admits no limits on the power and competence of the state. There is no aspect of life that is conceptually beyond the reach of the political sphere. That is to say, the state is potentially or actually master of the totality of society.  Each side in the great ideological divide of our time admits some limits of state power. Working together, however, each giving what the other wants in a great political exchange, we might have that real thing: a total state.”

Congress adds contested cybersecurity measures to ‘must-pass’ spending bill

“Congress added some of the most controversial parts of the latest cybersecurity bill to its gigantic end-of-year ‘must-pass’ omnibus spending package, including mandatory sharing of any consumer data it collects with the Internal Revenue Service, FBI and the National Security Agency.  Civil liberties experts said they were dismayed that Congress had used the late-night bill to pass some of the most invasive parts of the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (Cisa).  Language that would have prevented consumer financial data from being shared directly with the NSA, for example, is not in the final version of the bill.”

Does Fear Lead to Fascism? A Culture of Fear and the Epigenetics of Terror

AGOW_SMALL1

You are 17,600 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a terrorist attack. You are 11,000 times more likely to die from an airplane accident than from a terrorist plot involving an airplane. You are 1,048 times more likely to die from a car accident than a terrorist attack. You are 404 times more likely to die in a fall than from a terrorist attack. You are 12 times more likely to die from accidental suffocating in bed than from a terrorist attack. And you are 9 more times likely to choke to death in your own vomit than die in a terrorist attack.  Indeed, those living in the American police state are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist.”

Obama calls out encryption in terror strategy speech

“United States President Barack Obama has given just his third Address to the Nation from behind his desk at the Oval Office, to deliver a speech in which he all-but-called-on the technology industry to allow access to encrypted communications.  Future actions, Obama said, will include an attempt to ‘urge high-tech and law enforcement leaders to make it harder for terrorists to use technology to escape from justice.’  The sentence isn’t explained, but seems a clear reference to the technology industry’s argument that encryption is essential for everyday life and therefore ought not to be equipped with back doors for government use.”

Trump doesn’t want ISIS “using our Internet”

“A week after saying the US should disrupt the Islamic terrorist group ISIS’ online recruiting by ‘closing that Internet up in some way,’ Donald Trump was given a chance to clarify what he meant at last night’s GOP debate. ‘You talk freedom of speech. You talk freedom of anything you want. I don’t want them using our Internet to take our young, impressionable youth,’ Trump said at the debate. Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) criticized Trump’s plan. ‘The question is, how do we keep America safe from terrorism? Trump says we ought to close that Internet thing. The question really is, what does he mean by that? Like they do in North Korea? Like they do in China?’ Paul said.”

Donald Trump defends Muslim ban: ‘We’re at war’

“A defiant Donald Trump is defending his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States.  ‘Something has to be done,’ Trump said on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America,’ one of several phone interviews the Republican frontrunner participated in Tuesday morning. ‘What I’m doing is I’m calling very simply for a shutdown of Muslims entering the United States — and here’s a key — until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.’  Trump’s plan, which was released Tuesday, calls for a ‘total and complete shutdown’ of all Muslims entering the country.  His campaign initially indicated the ban would include Muslim-Americans traveling overseas.”

Ron Paul: Will the IRS Take Your Passport?

“One of the articles of impeachment brought against Richard Nixon dealt with his attempt to have the IRS audit those Nixon perceived as political enemies. During the 1990s, an IRS agent allegedly told the head of an organization supporting then-President Bill Clinton’s impeachment, ‘What do you expect when you target the President?’  As the federal debt increases and the American economy declines, an increasingly desperate Congress will look for new ways to squeeze more revue from taxpayers. Thus, the IRS will increasingly gain new and ever more tyrannical powers over Americans, including new restrictions on the right to travel or even move capital out of the country.”

Millions of Americans might need passports to fly domestic in 2016

“A decade ago, the U.S. government issued stricter standards for state-issued IDs, including drivers licenses. But four states have refused to comply: Louisiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire and New York.  The deadline for upgrading is coming up in 2016. If those four states don’t upgrade their ID systems by the deadline, the TSA will demand that residents of those four states use passports rather than drivers licenses to board flights next year. About 9.5 million drivers licenses have been issued in those states, according to government licensing records.”

IRS Power To Revoke Passports Signed Into Law

“The list of affected taxpayers will be compiled by the IRS. The IRS will use a threshold of $50,000 of unpaid federal taxes. But this $50,000 figure includes penalties and interest. And as everyone knows, interest and penalties can add up fast.  Notably, if you are contesting a proposed tax bill administratively with the IRS or in court, that should not count. That is not yet a tax debt. There is also an administrative exception, allowing the State Department to issue a passport in an emergency or for humanitarian reasons. But how that will work isn’t clear, nor is the amount of time it will take to get special dispensation.”
