Robbing Peter

“Spain may defend its decision by pointing out that it has one of the lowest tax takes in the European Union, which is true. However, what should be the issue here is not the amount of tax being imposed, but the principle upon which the tax is being taken. Let there be no doubt about this bail-in or any other—it is pure theft.  The measure in Spain is also an advance on the concept that, as long as an emergency is perceived to exist, confiscation is justified. In Spain, no emergency situation is being pretended; they simply want the money and have decided to take it.”

US cops use more ammo per man than German cops in a year

“Eighty-five shots: That’s the total number of bullets German police used in all of 2011, Der Spiegel reports. But what does it say when US cops use as much ammo to bring down one man as German cops need to keep the peace nationwide?  The rate at which German police discharged their firearms is further underscored by how rarely they shot with fatal intent.  U.S. violent crime has significantly dropped over the last 20 years, with murder and robbery rates halving from 1991-98.  But while citizens commit fewer crimes annually, US law enforcement have become increasingly militarized in the post-9/11 world.”

Why Congress Wants to Revoke Your Passport

“The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates this measure will raise $388 million in tax revenues over the next decade. That’s enough to pay for about 0.1% – one tenth of one percent – of estimated highway expenditures during that period.  In other words, the passport revocation measure has nothing to do with actually raising revenue. It has a lot more to do with showing US citizens ‘who’s the boss.’ And the boss is not you.  The Wyden bill includes a provision that would result in passport revocation or denial if you refuse to disclose your Social Security number when you apply for or renew your passport.”

PA police fear loss of federal funding for DUI checkpoints

“Officers say they’re worried about grant funding that pays for the extra enforcement.  Police drunken driving task forces are paid from federal funds doled out by PennDOT annually.  PennDOT officials said they don’t know how much money will be available statewide in the coming fiscal year but $5.4 million was handed out in each of the past two years.   Cathy Tress, the Western Pennsylvania liaison for the Pennsylvania DUI Association, said the grant money pays for police overtime and equipment.  PennDOT data show that last year, there were 2,759 crashes from June 30 through July 9, of which 256 were alcohol-related.”

U.S. Implements 4th of July ‘No Refusal’ Blood-Draw DUI Checkpoints

“Some alarming new Independence Day traditions have emerged in the contemporary United States. State and local police across the country are preparing ‘no refusal’ DUI and DWI checkpoints at which citizens will be investigated for suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, not on the basis of their driving, but simply due to their geographic location.  Judicial officials will be on hand all throughout the holiday weekend to approve warrants, in some cases over the phone, that allow officers to take blood from citizens by force, which will then be examined for intoxicants. The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security has publicized its checkpoint locations.”

Happy “No Refusal Day” 2014

Over the ‘Independence Day’ weekend citizens across the nation will celebrate the fourth day of July with a ‘blitz’ of ‘no-refusal’ blood-draw checkpoints. State troopers have renamed the weekend as ‘No Refusal Weekend.’  Drivers stopped by police who refuse to take an alcohol breath test will undergo a mandatory blood test either at the scene, at a medical facility or at the nearest jail. Anyone who even questions the breath test could also automatically lose their permission to drive for a year.  For those cities not officially implementing the ‘No Refusal Weekend’ they will likely be implementing a ‘Maximum Enforcement Weekend.’ Look for your region on the list.”

Americans’ sense of freedom drops below Paraguay, Rwanda

“This Independence Day, Americans will celebrate the nation’s core values, especially freedom. But according to a new international poll, Americans have become significantly ‘less satisfied with the freedom to choose what they want to do with their lives.’  Seventy-nine percent of US residents are satisfied with their level of freedom, down from 91 percent in 2006, according to the Gallup survey, released Tuesday.  That 12-point drop pushes the United States from among the highest in the world in terms of perceived freedom to 36th place, outside the top quartile of the 120 countries sampled, trailing Paraguay, Rwanda, and the autonomous region of Nagorno-Karabakh.”

Civilian casualties authorized under secret US drone-strike memo

“A secret Obama administration memo disclosed Monday outlines the legal justification for the government’s drone-targeted killing program, a lethal strategy that authorizes the killing of innocents as collateral damage.  The memo (PDF) describes the government’s legal underpinnings for its so-called overseas targeted-killing program where drones from afar shoot missiles at buildings, cars, and people. It began under the George W. Bush administration but was broadened under Obama and now includes the killing of Americans.  The Obama administration fought for years to keep the Justice Department Office of Legal Counsel memo from becoming public.”

Jeffrey Tucker: The War Is On You

“Of all the problems that the ruling elite faced at the end of the Cold War, the most pressing was that the American people were dreaming of peace and normalcy, and increasingly intolerant of the overweening cost of being the world’s last superpower.  That was when the bombing began. We watched as people far away were fire bombed and murdered, how a mighty government was brought to its knees, how all the weapons built at our expense for decades could be used to subjugate a whole nation.  That was an ominous display.”

When Obama Told the Truth About Gitmo . . . and Then Forgot

“Obama just sent five Gitmo prisoners back to Afghanistan in exchange for an American soldier who may have deserted. Drudge fills the page with stories.  The entire focus is on the American. What about the five released prisoners, who never received a trial?  Obama is at long last pulling troops out of Afghanistan, yet he is still holding prisoners captured in Afghanistan, who were never given a trial.  If the war is over, shouldn’t we close Guantánamo? ‘Never,’ Republicans say. ‘This is a great way to spend our tax dollars. This is America’s version of Castro’s concentration camps in Cuba. We deserve one, too!'”
