‘Silk Road 2.0’ Launches, Promising A Resurrected Black Market

“Like the old Silk Road, which until its closure served as the Web’s most popular bazaar for anonymous narcotics sales, the new site uses the anonymity tool Tor and the cryptocurrency Bitcoin to protect the identity of its users. As of Wednesday morning, it already sported close to 500 drug listings, ranging from marijuana to ecstasy to cocaine. It’s even being administered by a new manager using the handle the Dread Pirate Roberts, the same pseudonym adopted by the previous owner and manager of the Silk Road, allegedly the 29-year-old Ross Ulbricht arrested by the FBI in San Francisco on October 2nd.”

BMC Software loses $13 million to IRS after repatriating $717.2 million

“In a decision that could have implications for other companies in similar disputes with the IRS, the Tax Court said BMC owes taxes on a portion of its foreign profits brought into the United States under the 2004 tax break. In 2004, President George W. Bush signed into law a repatriation holiday that allowed multinational U.S. businesses to bring foreign profits into the United States at a 5.25 percent tax rate, rather than the then current 35 percent rate.  In 2005, BMC repatriated $717.2 million.  Analog Devices Inc, a Massachusetts-based circuit-maker, has a similar dispute over $26 million pending with the IRS.”

In U.S., Perceived Need for Third Party Reaches New High

“Amid the government shutdown, 60% of Americans say the Democratic and Republicans parties do such a poor job of representing the American people that a third major party is needed. That is the highest Gallup has measured in the 10-year history of this question. A new low of 26% believe the two major parties adequately represent Americans.  The results are consistent with Gallup’s finding of more negative opinions of both parties since the shutdown began, including a new low favorable rating for the Republican Party, and Americans’ widespread dissatisfaction with the way the nation is being governed.”

The core Internet institutions abandon the US Government

IGP-Masthead-final-WP22

“In Montevideo, Uruguay this week, the Directors of all the major Internet organizations – ICANN, the Internet Engineering Task Force, the Internet Architecture Board, the World Wide Web Consortium, the Internet Society, all five of the regional Internet address registries – turned their back on the US government. With striking unanimity, the organizations that actually develop and administer Internet standards and resources initiated a break with 3 decades of U.S. dominance of Internet governance.  It is the latest, and one of the most significant manifestations of the fallout from the Snowden revelations about NSA spying on the global Internet.”

Russia to Grab Pension Money, Temporarily

“Russia’s government is temporarily seizing $7.6 billion in savings from non-state pension funds while it carries out inspections, a move critics say looks like a ‘confiscation’ aimed at plugging a hole in next year’s state budget.  Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told ministers Thursday that the government needs to check that the money Russians channel to private pension funds is safe. To do this, it will seize 244 billion rubles ($7.6 billion) from non-state pension funds and put them into the state pension fund.  Pension funds hold more than $100 billion in assets.  Government officials say they’ll just hold the money on the state pension fund’s books for a year while the checks are carried out.”

NYPD urging people to upgrade Apple devices to iOS7 because it is ‘safer’

“New York police officers were handing out flyers to people around New York City on Saturday urging them to upgrade their devices to Apple’s new iOS7 operating system. NYPD’s Public Awareness Notice promotes the software as giving ‘added security to your devices’.  The NYPD notice also urges people to register their devices with their ‘Operation Identification Program’.  One of those given a flyer was Michael Hoffman, who posted a picture on his Twitter account showing the paper from the police that was given to him at his subway stop.  His tweet says: ‘Four uniformed NYPD officers were at my subway stop tonight asking me to upgrade to iOS 7. Not a joke!'”

FATCA: a Tool of the Electronic Surveillance State

“If FATCA’s sole purpose were to ‘recover’ tax revenues from assets squirreled away offshore by American ‘fat cats,’ it seems odd that it targets only individuals and specifically exempts reporting on accounts held by U.S. corporations. On the other hand, targeting individuals makes a lot of sense if FATCA’s purpose is directed towards something else: adding to U.S. government agencies’ global electronic ‘map’ of personal information. It should be further understood that any data transmitted by foreign financial institutions will not be confined to the IRS but will be handed over (‘upon request,’ of course) to other ‘three-letter’ agencies of the U.S. government.”

Putin: Syria chem arms handover will work only if US calls off strike

“‘Of course, all of this will only mean anything if the United States and other nations supporting it tell us that they’re giving up their plan to use force against Syria. You can’t really ask Syria, or any other country, to disarm unilaterally while military action against it is being contemplated,’ President Putin said on Tuesday.  President Putin said that the matter of bringing Syria’s chemical weapons under international control has long been a subject of discussion by experts and politicians.  Putin confirmed that he and President Barack Obama had ‘indeed discussed’ such a possibility on the sidelines of the G20 summit in St. Petersburg last week.”

Bitcoin and Politics: What Could Go Wrong?

“Bitcoin, the alternative sort-of currency whose most ardent fans congregate in that part of the Venn diagram where ‘tech’ and ‘libertarian’ overlap, has always had a political flip-side.  Other political organizations have already worked the Bitcoin vein, including candidates in North Dakota and Vermont. Darryl Perry, a libertarian candidate for president in 2016, sent an open letter to the FEC in April informing the commission that his campaign would ‘not be accepting donations in currencies recognized by the federal legal tender laws.’ Instead, Perry will ‘only accept bitcoin, litecoin and precious metals.'”

Bitcoin’s dilemma: go mainstream, or stay radical?

“Bitcoin enthusiasts and libertarians the world over are in a state of confusion about the slowness with which the outside world is catching on to their new way of exchanging money. But regulators and lawmakers are now, very gradually, realising they need to do something about this growing beast, even if they don’t quite know what that something is.  If the ‘teenage band’ gets signed on a ‘mainstream label’ then it will inevitably stray into more commercially minded territory. However, if the managers of the labels are not listening closely or do not like what they hear, perhaps this period of underground innovation will continue.”
