Crisis looms after Tongan passports sold

“Tonga is slipping into a high-level political crisis after revelations its diplomatic passports have been sold to Chinese nationals on the express order of the island nation’s prime minister.  The issue is splitting the already divided royal family, with King Tupou VI ordering that passports not be sold – but the Queen Mother insisting they be given to her Chinese friends.  Diplomatic passports give holders special high-security access in many airports.  Tonga has had a long history of selling citizenship and passports. In the 1990s it gave them away to runaway despots such as Ferdinand Marcos, of the Philippines, and his family, Hong Kong criminals and Libyan and Palestinian nationals.”

12 Countries That Will Punish You For Insulting Their Heads Of State

“Even liberal little Netherlands has laws to protect its rulers’ honor. Intentionally insulting the monarch could earn you up to five years’ imprisonment or a fine, while the same offense against the monarch’s spouse, the heir apparent, the heir apparent’s spouse or the regent carries up to four years behind bars. And these laws don’t just sit gathering dust in the statute books, by the way: in 2007, two people were arrested for separately calling the then Queen Beatrix a ‘w–re,’ while in 2012 another two individuals found themselves with short prison sentences for making statements judged offensive to her dignity.”

Chicago Issues $100 Million in Bonds to Settle Police Brutality Cases

“The city is attempting to issue the $900 million in bonds to lower some of its borrowing costs and to double its short-term credit line to $1 billion. But fully $100 million of that debt burden is going to pay off lawsuits, much of it to plaintiffs who won judgments against the city in police brutality cases.  Several years ago, the CPD was rocked by a high profile case that eventually found Police Commander Jon Burge and his ‘Midnight Crew’ of officers guilty of torture aimed at forcing suspects to confess to various crimes, whether they were guilty or not.”

Ex-Port Authority Official Says Christie Knew About Lane Closings

“The former Port Authority official who personally oversaw the lane closings at the George Washington Bridge, central to the scandal now swirling around Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, said on Friday that ‘evidence exists’ the governor knew about the lane closings when they were happening.  The bridge scandal erupted in early January, when documents emerged revealing that a deputy chief of staff to the governor, Bridget Anne Kelly, had sent an email to Mr. Wildstein saying, ‘Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,’ the town at the New Jersey end of the bridge, where Mr. Christie’s aides had pursued but failed to receive an endorsement from the mayor, who is a Democrat.”

Liberal icon urges Obama impeachment

“Worse than Richard Nixon. An unprecedented abuse of powers. The most un-American president in the nation’s history.  Nat Hentoff does not think much of President Obama.  And now, the famous journalist says it is time to begin looking into impeachment.  Hentoff sees the biggest problem as Obama’s penchant to rule by executive order when he can’t convince Congress to do things his way.  The First Amendment expert still hews left on many issues, railing against former President George W. Bush, former Vice President Dick Cheney, the prison at Guantanamo Bay and the National Defense Authorization Act.”

Sheldon Richman: The Surveillance State Lives

“President Obama has some nerve. He opened his speech on NSA spying by likening his surveillance regime to Paul Revere and the Sons of Liberty. How insulting! They were helping people resist government tyranny, and the British spied on them to put down the coming rebellion.  To the extent Obama has become more favorable to surveillance since the Bush years it’s apparently because, as a former aide told the New York Times, ‘he trusts himself to use these powers more than he did the Bush administration.’  In light of this flagrant disregard for the truth and willingness to bamboozle the people, why should anyone take Obama’s ‘reforms’ seriously?”

The Lust for Power

“The unending struggle between liberty and power became the conceptual framework for many histories written by classical liberals and libertarians. As Lord Acton, the dean of liberal historians, put it, the ‘struggle for the concentration of power and for the limitation and division of power is the mainspring of history.'”

NYPD Seized an Innocent Man’s Cash, Used It to Pad Their Pensions

“Without a warrant, the New York Police Department (NYPD) burst into the home of Gerald Bryan in a nighttime raid in March of 2012. Police punched through walls, tore out light fixtures and seized $4,800 in cash. Gerald was suspected of distributing drugs and taken into custody. One year later, the case against him was dropped. But when Gerald tried to get his money back, he found that it had been deposited into the pension fund for the NYPD.  According to Steven Kessler, the former head of the Bronx District Attorney’s forfeiture unit, property owners are not charged with a crime in 85 percent of the forfeiture cases pursued by the NYPD.”

This Chart Explains Why Politicians Aren’t Like The Rest of Us

“Members of Congress have always been rich, and today they’re even richer.  In fact, a new study from the Center for Responsive Politics suggests, it’s possible more than half of them are millionaires.  The Center for Responsive Politics, which runs the money-in-government website OpenSecrets.org, calculated the maximum and minimum possible net worth of each member of Congress, by adding up the high and low ends of the value ranges for each asset and liability listed. They then averaged the two and found that, for more than half of members, that average is over $1 million.”

Sign of the Times: Misdirected Apology!

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“When governor Chris Christie of New Jersey discovered, on January 8th or thereabouts, that members of his staff conducted a vendetta against some of his political rivals by ordering the closing of some lanes of the George Washington Bridge and thus producing a colossal traffic tie-up that interfered with the lives of hundreds of thousands of commuters (including ambulances answering medical emergencies), he apologized to, well, the political rivals instead of to the people who were intruded upon by the vendetta.  Pundits and commentators around the national joined in, with none of them noting that the apology was due not to the political rivals but to the ordinary citizens whose lives were disrupted.”
