Trump ally Duterte makes rape joke after ordering martial law

“President Rodrigo Duterte made a joke about rape as he urged soldiers to use the powers of martial law to take control of a besieged city in the southern Philippines.  In the speech Friday, Duterte said he will pay the consequences if any soldiers are accused of abuses.  He said: ‘I will go to jail for you. If you happen to have raped three women, I will own up to it.’  On Tuesday, Duterte imposed 60 days of martial law in the southern Philippines as government forces battle militants in Marawi, a city of some 200,000 people.  Duterte is unapologetic about his manner of speech and liberally peppers casual statements with profanities.”

A new GOP bill would make it virtually impossible to sue the police

“Republicans in the House and Senate recently introduced a bill they’re calling the Back the Blue Act of 2017. The bill would create new federal crimes, impose federal police over the will of local officials and voters and shield police officers from virtually any civil liability, even in cases of egregious misconduct.”

Sessions’ ‘New’ Drug Policy: Even More Mandatory Minimums

“The directive instructs federal prosecutors to pursue the most serious, readily provable offense. It thus resurrects the emphasis on mandatory minimum sentencing requirements, which have required judges to impose draconian sentences for drug crimes, even when they don’t believe these sentences are warranted. Sessions’ memo rescinds and reverses the reforms implemented by former Attorney General Eric Holder, which urged prosecutors to charge people with low-level drug cases to avoid triggering mandatory minimum sentences. Nearly half (or 92,000) of the people in federal prison are serving sentences for drug convictions.”

Global Entry Passengers Swept Up In Trump’s Travel Ban

“American citizens certified for Global Entry often learned of the issue only when they sought to travel, according to the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, which says it received ‘dozens’ of complaints and is seeking agency records about the revocations through the Freedom of Information Act.  The CBP did not respond to questions about how many people had been purged and restored to the ‘trusted traveler’ programs.  Several of the people who complained about being removed from the programs were U.S. citizens originally from countries not included in the bans: India, Lebanon, and Pakistan.”

WaPo: The U.S. will never win the war in Afghanistan

“Obama signed off on a surge that ended with 100,000 U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. His generals also promised to break the stalemate. Today, the Taliban controls more of the country than it has since 2001.  Why are we still there? We went into Afghanistan after 9/11 to get Osama bin Laden and to punish the Taliban for harboring al-Qaeda. Now bin Laden is dead; al-Qaeda is dispersed; the Taliban has been battered. The United Nations reports that there were more than 11,000 war-related civilian casualties last year, and 660,000 Afghans were displaced, adding to the country’s massive refugee crisis.  The war has now cost us over $1 trillion, making it the second-costliest U.S. war.”

Trump’s Medical Marijuana Threat Contradicts the Law and His Own Position

“Trump is not only trying to usurp the congressional power to decide how taxpayers’ money will be spent; he is threatening to interfere with the autonomy that states are supposed to have under the 10th Amendment. He is also contradicting his own position both before and after his election.”

Peter Schiff, Trumpcare: Different Plan, Same Problems

“A new form of insurance that this law may create: A policy that would pay for health insurance premiums if the user ever got sick enough to need them.  Such insurance would be very cheap, as the maximum exposure to the insurance company is only 130% of the premium for a standard health insurance policy.  In the end, the only people buying health insurance would be those who can buy it for free using their tax credits and really sick people for whom insurance premiums are cheaper than their medical bills.   But as insurance companies lose money on the latter group, they will be forced to raise their premiums on the former.  This puts us right back in the box we are stuck in with Obamacare.”
