“The haters of the sharing economy are rallying around a plan for destroying the most spectacular ad innovative sector of modern economic life.  The hint came from a speech by Hillary Clinton at the New School in which she suggested that current ‘contractors’ be redefined as ’employees.’ According to her, this means that the workers can then enjoy new human rights, as if by magic. Hillary’s comments amount to a cloud no bigger than a man’s hand. She was speaking for the entire cabal of special interests who dream of crushing innovation.  Hillary poses as a spokesperson for the worker. What it actually means for employment is that many will be out of a job.”

Former President Jimmy Carter Calls U.S. an Oligarchy

“Almost 35 years later, Carter is now the longest surviving ex-president in U.S. history. That’s a long time to observe and reflect. He has little to lose by being honest, so his comments last week deserve some attention. Carter blasted both major parties and from state legislatures up to Congress. The U.S., he believes, is an oligarchy built on unlimited political bribery. Those are strong words. We see them on sites like The Daily Bell, but considerably less often from those inside the oligarchy.  We are approaching, and perhaps already are at, a point where oligarchy is seen as normal and natural. People don’t mind living under oligarchy as long as the ‘right’ people control it.”

How Hillary Clinton plans to ‘save capitalism’

“Clinton proposed raising capital gains taxes on investments held for only short periods of time. The tax on investment earnings would nearly double from their current rate of 20% for investments held less than two years. And the rate for those in the top tax bracket would be set on a sliding scale, with incentives for people who hold their investments longer.  Meanwhile, Clinton said she would change the tax code to eliminate incentives for CEOs to be paid based on short-term bumps in share prices, with the aim of encouraging leaders to plan more strategically for the future.  Clinton also took on what she called ‘hit and run’ shareholders – activist investors.”

Trump Tried to Bulldoze an Elderly Widow’s Home to Build a Limo Parking Lot

“Donald Trump is leading the GOP primary polls with 24 percent.  In 1994, Trump got Atlantic City to condemn Vera Coking’s home so that he could build limo parking for his Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. The Institute for Justice took on Trump in one of its first big eminent domain cases:  She was able to beat Trump and the city government and win the right to keep her property.  Coking moved to a retirement home in 2010, having lived almost 50 years in her Atlantic City home. Coking’s grandson finally sold the house in July 2014; less than two months later, the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino closed for lack of business.”

U.S. presidential election already fueled by $377 million

“The major parties’ top presidential candidates in the fundraising race – Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican Jeb Bush – are collecting cash in the huge amounts needed to fuel the extensive political organizations they are building for the 2016 campaign.  Clinton’s campaign is spending money at a rapid clip, according to initial fundraising reports filed Wednesday with federal regulators.  The former first lady and front-runner in the Democratic race has paid out 40 percent of the $47 million in donations that she amassed by the end of June, employing some 364 people and building infrastructure across the country in preparation for next year’s general election.“

Clinton’s Big Speech Leaves Uber and Airbnb’s Future in Limbo

“Clinton said she ‘vows to crack down on employers who misclassify workers as independent contractors.’ She also noted that the ‘so-called gig economy offers exciting opportunities but raises hard questions about workplace protections and what a good job will look like in the future’.  Clinton didn’t offer specifics, so we can’t say whether she’ll be a friend or foe to the sharing economy. But, her ambiguous statements make it hard for startups to plan for the future. Investors may be scared to bet on sharing economy businesses if their planned model gets met with resistance at the presidential level.”

“For now, Trump seems more like comedy than reality. I want to laugh about what he said, like reading a comic-book version of Franco, Mussolini, or Hitler. And truly I did laugh, as when he denounced the existence of tech support in India that serves American companies (‘how can it be cheaper to call people there than here?’ — as if he still thinks that long-distance charges apply).  Let’s hope this laughter doesn’t turn to tears.  So, what does Trump actually believe? He does have a philosophy, though it takes a bit of insight and historical understanding to discern it.”

Obama orders more troops to Iraq to guide fight against Islamic State

“U.S. officials hope that a strengthened American presence on the ground in Anbar will help the Iraqi military devise and carry out a counter-attack to retake the provincial capital Ramadi, which insurgents seized last month in an onslaught that further exposed the shortcomings of the Iraqi army.  The U.S. advisers, who will be injected into the heart of one of the most hotly contested areas of the Islamic State campaign, will offer tactical advice to Iraqi officers on how to conduct their operations, the Pentagon said.   Obama also ordered ‘the expedited delivery of essential equipment and materiel’ to Iraqi forces, including Kurdish peshmerga troops and Sunni fighters operating under Iraqi command.”

The sad fact is that while whistleblowers have been imprisoned for revealing government criminality, no one in the federal bureaucracy has ever actually been punished for the crimes of torture, kidnapping and assassination committed during the George W. Bush and Barack H. Obama presidencies.”

However, the Clinton administration considered communication security a threat to national security.  Attorney General Janet Reno said, ‘Without encryption safeguards, all Americans will be endangered.’ She didn’t mean that we needed the safeguard of encryption, but that we had to be protected from encryption.”
