Ousted Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi sentenced to death

“The ruling applies to another 120 people, and is the latest in a series of mass death sentences handed down since the military overthrew Morsi nearly two years ago. It will likely further polarize Egypt, a longtime U.S. ally grappling with an Islamist insurgency that has intensified since Morsi’s overthrow. Supporters of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood, now outlawed and branded a terrorist group, chanted ‘down, down with military rule’ as the judge announced the verdict in a converted lecture hall in the national police academy. Amnesty International also denounced the verdicts, saying ‘the death penalty has become the favorite tool for the Egyptian authorities to purge the political opposition.'”

Australia To Start Taxing Bank Deposits

logo3
“The Federal Opposition has accused the Government of breaking an election promise by planning to introduce a tax on bank deposits.  The former Labor Government put forward the policy in 2013 to raise revenue for a fund to protect customers in the event of a banking collapse.  Shadow Assistant Treasurer Andrew Leigh said Treasurer Joe Hockey criticised the proposal at the time. ‘When we put it on the table Joe Hockey said that it was a smash and grab on Australian households just aimed at repairing the budget,’ he said.  The banking industry has raised concerns about a deposit tax, saying it will have to pass the cost back onto customers.”

Obama sends 1,500 more US troops to Iraq, requests $5.6 billion for war

“President Obama has approved sending up to 1,500 additional U.S. troops to Iraq, doubling the number being deployed to help Iraqi forces fight the Islamic State.  The president also requested an additional $5.6 billion on Friday for the war against the Islamic State, in part to cover the additional deployments.  The decisions reflect a deepening U.S. involvement in the region, though the White House again stressed that U.S. personnel ‘will not be in combat,’ but rather training, advising and assisting Iraqi forces near Baghdad and Irbil.  The U.S. has been launching airstrikes on Islamic State group militants and facilities in Iraq and Syria for weeks.”

New N.C. GOP congressman endorses going to war with Mexico

“[..] we need to utilize the National Guard as much as we can. But, I will tell you If you have foreigners who are sneaking in with drug cartels to me that is a national threat and if we got to go laser or blitz somebody with a couple of fighter jets for a little while to make our point, I don’t have a problem with that either. So yea, whatever you need to do. [..] we did it before, if we need to do it again, I don’t have a qualm about it.”

Senate power shift to GOP brings sterner tone to foreign policy debate

“The Republican takeover of the U.S. Senate will bring a tough new tone to the debate over Washington’s foreign policy, with lawmakers expected use their new clout and power over the budget to promote a more interventionist foreign policy.  Republicans plan to pressure the White House to take a tougher line on Iran, Russia and Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria.  Two of Washington’s most vocal foreign policy hawks, John McCain and Lindsey Graham, came in line to chair two key Senate panels. McCain, who has advocated a more robust response in both Ukraine and Syria, will lead the Senate Armed Services Committee, which oversees military policy.”

France: The new sick man of Europe?

“President Francois Hollande is politically weakened with his approval rating at an all-time low of 17 percent, and France could be falling into another recession. The French economy could be on the brink of becoming the latest sick man of Europe.  Unemployment is higher than at any time since the late 1990s and has not fallen below 7 percent in nearly 30 years – creating chronic joblessness in the crime-riddden banlieues of France’s big urban areas.  France has not balanced its books since 1974 and public debt stands at over 90 percent of GDP and is rising. Statistics released this week revealed French manufacturing confidence fell to the lowest in 13 months in August.”

Obomber: US may be forced to “wipe out” Syrian air defenses

“Still looking to prove himself worthy of the Nobel peace prize which he so greatly treasures, Obomber is reported to have implicitly threatened the Syrian government. Via the NY Times:  ‘He made clear the intricacy of the situation, though, as he contemplated the possibility that Mr. Assad might order his forces to fire at American planes entering Syrian airspace. If he dared to do that, Mr. Obama said he would order American forces to wipe out Syria’s air defense system, which he noted would be easier than striking ISIS because its locations are better known. He went on to say that such an action by Mr. Assad would lead to his overthrow, according to one account.'”

Obama Follows Bush’s Iraq Playbook

“Obama speaks of protecting the American people. He means Americans both abroad and at home. Americans of course are free to travel anywhere. If the U.S. government is to have the power to protect or avenge them abroad, it will have to be able to exercise military power globally. Such imperial power, which the government has long exercised, should disturb peace- and freedom-loving Americans precisely because it creates the potential for perpetual war, invites retaliatory terrorism, and requires high government spending and borrowing. It may be taken for granted that a president can go to war when an American is killed overseas, but that kind of power is too dangerous to accept meekly.”

Obama Says U.S. Will Bomb ISIS in Syria, Train Rebels

“President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he will expand the U.S. air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), lifting restrictions on American strikes in Iraq and for the first time authorizing direct attacks against the militant group in Syria. Obama, who was elected to end two wars, found himself announcing an open-ended campaign against ISIS, as American public opinion has shifted in favor of strikes against the group following the beheading of two American journalists. American officials have repeatedly said they are not aware of any active plots by ISIS against the U.S. homeland.”
