Finance Goes From Foe to Friend in Hollande Government

“During his election campaign in 2011, President Francois Hollande famously called finance his ‘greatest adversary.’ In a speech today, French Finance Minister Michel Sapin called finance ‘a friend,” quickly specifying that he was talking about ‘good finance.’  The new stance comes as the president’s popularity is at a record low and his economic policies have drawn the ire of members of his own Socialist Party and of allied groups. Recovery remains anemic and joblessness is at a record high.  Global finance, however, has stuck with Hollande. Investors have piled into French bonds, giving Hollande’s government borrowing costs that are close to the lowest on record.”

Ron Paul: Celebrate Independence Day By Opposing Tyranny

131203122616-ron-paul-bitcoin-620xa1

“The idea of opposing — by force if necessary — a tyrannical government has been turned into a celebration of tyrannical government itself! The evidence is all around us. How would the signers of the Declaration of Independence have viewed, for example, the Obama Administration’s ‘drone memo,’ finally released last week, which claims to justify the president’s killing American citizens without charge, judge, jury, or oversight? Is this not a tyranny similar to that which our Founders opposed? And was such power concentrated in one branch of government not what inspired the rebellion against the English king in the first place?”

Civilian casualties authorized under secret US drone-strike memo

“A secret Obama administration memo disclosed Monday outlines the legal justification for the government’s drone-targeted killing program, a lethal strategy that authorizes the killing of innocents as collateral damage.  The memo (PDF) describes the government’s legal underpinnings for its so-called overseas targeted-killing program where drones from afar shoot missiles at buildings, cars, and people. It began under the George W. Bush administration but was broadened under Obama and now includes the killing of Americans.  The Obama administration fought for years to keep the Justice Department Office of Legal Counsel memo from becoming public.”

When Obama Told the Truth About Gitmo . . . and Then Forgot

“Obama just sent five Gitmo prisoners back to Afghanistan in exchange for an American soldier who may have deserted. Drudge fills the page with stories.  The entire focus is on the American. What about the five released prisoners, who never received a trial?  Obama is at long last pulling troops out of Afghanistan, yet he is still holding prisoners captured in Afghanistan, who were never given a trial.  If the war is over, shouldn’t we close Guantánamo? ‘Never,’ Republicans say. ‘This is a great way to spend our tax dollars. This is America’s version of Castro’s concentration camps in Cuba. We deserve one, too!'”

Obama Deploys US Troops to Iraq as Insurgents Gain Ground

“Obama has told Congress he will send about 170 of the troops to the U.S. Embassy to secure the scores of Americans still present there. The $700 million fortress is the size of 80 football fields, built to withstand attacks.  Obama is also considering sending in U.S. Special Forces – 100 in all — to help advise Iraqi forces. Those forces, some of which might be sent to Kuwait, could be used for airfield management, security and logistics support, officials said.   If the United States decides to attack, more options are also available. An aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf is capable of launching 40 fighter jets to strike ISIS militants.  Three other ships are also able to launch cruise missiles.”

French Fried Entrepreneurs: They Are Leaving

“Rich people in France are pulling up stakes. They will escape the tax man. (Unlike the USA, if you are not living in France, you do not pay taxes to the French government.)  Young people in France who want to start businesses say they want to leave France. A lot of them will.  France’s taxes are higher than anywhere else in Western Europe. French unions are stronger. French workers don’t put in Germanic days — or even Italian days.  Before the eyes of the world, the Keynesian experiment is going belly-up. A self-proclaimed socialist is captain of France’s economic Titanic.”

In junta-ruled Thailand, reading is now resistance

“The junta has banned political gatherings of five people or more.  Since taking over, the military has made clear it will tolerate no dissent, and it has launched a major campaign to silence critics and censor the media. The junta has warned all citizens against doing anything that might incite conflict, and the list of targets has been long.  At least 14 partisan TV networks have been shut down along with nearly 3,000 unlicensed community radio stations. Independent international TV channels such as CNN and BBC have been blocked along with more than 300 Web pages. Journalists and academics have been summoned by the army.”

Yellen tells graduates: Show grit like Ben Bernanke

“Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen on Wednesday delivered what you’d expect from a commencement speech: graduates, she said, should ‘tend the fires of curiosity,’ listen to others, and show grit in the face of failure. Yellen reminded New York University students in Yankee Stadium that even Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio failed most of the time they stepped to the plate, according to a text of her remarks.  And what example did Yellen find for such an inspirational beacon of bravery?  Why, her predecessor, Ben Bernanke.”

Proposed Iraqi law would legalize marital rape, child marriage

“A vision of a theocracy in Iraq is seemingly more within reach for these groups now that the U.S. presence has waned; this week’s elections will be the first since the U.S. military troop withdrawal in 2011.  The party proposed similar rules in 2004, after Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, was routed from power and Iraqi politicians began cobbling together interim constitutions and governments.   For Faiza Babakhan, an activist and former parliamentarian, the new law signals an erosion of women’s rights that has left her and other women reminiscing about Iraq under Saddam.”

U.S. would welcome Modi as India leader despite past visa ban

“Modi was shunned by Western nations for years after the bloodshed in Gujarat, where he has been chief minister since 2001. He was denied a U.S. visa in 2005 under the terms of a 1998 U.S. law which bars entry to foreigners who have committed ‘particularly severe violations of religious freedom.’  Modi’s rise on the national stage, however, and the importance of relations with India, which the United States sees as a key counterbalance to China in Asia, have forced a rethink.  The State Department described the Indian elections as ‘an inspiring example of the power of the democratic process in action’ and stressed their peaceful nature – in spite of the killing of 41 Muslims in the state of Assam.”
