U.S. press freedom plunges to 46th, behind former Soviet states

“The United States has plunged thirteen places in the World Press Freedom Index, placing it behind former Soviet states and other countries not typically known for press freedoms.  The massive drop is attributable mostly to the Obama Administration’s effort to crack down on whistleblowers. Obama’s Justice Department has filed suit against more whistleblowers than any other presidential administration in history.  Forty-sixth places it behind the former Soviet republics of Lithuania and Latvia and the satellite states of Romania, Poland and Czechoslovakia (both the Czech Republic and Slovakia). It also puts it behind Ghana, South Africa and El Salvador.”

NYT Editor: This Administration Is the Most Secretive and Closed Ever

“The government has taken to protecting criminal wrongdoing by attacking whistleblowers … and any journalists who have the nerve to report on the spilled beans.  (The government has also repealed long-standing laws against using propaganda against Americans on U.S. soil, and the government is manipulating social media).  The Obama administration has prosecuted more whistleblowers than all other presidents combined.  And it goes out of its way to smear whistleblowersthreaten reporters who discuss whistleblower information and harass honest analysts. Journalism is not only being criminalized in America, but investigative reporting is actually treated like terrorism.”

Jack Lew to John Boehner: Raise debt ceiling in February

“The Obama administration wants Congress to raise the debt limit in the next 16 days.  Treasury Secretary Jack Lew sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday, saying the ‘best course of action would be for Congress to’ raise the nation’s debt limit ‘before February 7 to ensure orderly financing of the government.’ At the latest, Lew writes, Congress must lift the cap by the end of February.  The debt limit is not the fiscal standoff it used to be. When Republicans first took the House, they demanded deep cuts to spending as a price for increasing the national borrowing limit. Last time they lifted the cap, they did it without concessions from Democrats and President Barack Obama.”

For American Police, Criminal Violence is Routine

Kang Wong is an 84-year-old New York resident who doesn’t understand English. Late in the afternoon, Wong was crossing the street when a police officer, believing the elderly man was jaywalking, ordered him to stop.  Because of the language barrier, Wong didn’t immediately respond. The officer escorted him to a nearby bank and attempted to write a ticket. Still not understanding what was happening, Wong started to walk away. The officer seized the octogenarian, who tried to shove the stranger’s hands away. That provoked intervention by several other officers, who beat the confused man bloody and arrested him.  A spokesman for Mayor de Blasio blithely defended the gang-beating.”

In U.S., 65% Dissatisfied With How Gov’t System Works

“Sixty-five percent of Americans are dissatisfied with the nation’s system of government and how well it works, the highest percentage in Gallup’s trend since 2001. Dissatisfaction is up five points since last year, and has edged above the previous high from 2012 (64%).  These findings are from Gallup’s annual Mood of the Nation poll, conducted Jan. 5-8, 2014. The trend line on this measure shows remarkable change over time, rising from fewer than one in four Americans expressing dissatisfaction in 2002, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, to the current situation in which almost two-thirds are dissatisfied.”

Liberal icon urges Obama impeachment

“Worse than Richard Nixon. An unprecedented abuse of powers. The most un-American president in the nation’s history.  Nat Hentoff does not think much of President Obama.  And now, the famous journalist says it is time to begin looking into impeachment.  Hentoff sees the biggest problem as Obama’s penchant to rule by executive order when he can’t convince Congress to do things his way.  The First Amendment expert still hews left on many issues, railing against former President George W. Bush, former Vice President Dick Cheney, the prison at Guantanamo Bay and the National Defense Authorization Act.”

Sheldon Richman: The Surveillance State Lives

“President Obama has some nerve. He opened his speech on NSA spying by likening his surveillance regime to Paul Revere and the Sons of Liberty. How insulting! They were helping people resist government tyranny, and the British spied on them to put down the coming rebellion.  To the extent Obama has become more favorable to surveillance since the Bush years it’s apparently because, as a former aide told the New York Times, ‘he trusts himself to use these powers more than he did the Bush administration.’  In light of this flagrant disregard for the truth and willingness to bamboozle the people, why should anyone take Obama’s ‘reforms’ seriously?”

Obama reveals himself as a champion of the surveillance state

“The president is at least as fond of passive constructions as Chris ‘Mistakes Were Made’ Christie. ‘Too often,’ Obama said, ‘new authorities were instituted without adequate public debate.’ But before the Snowden revelations, the American public didn’t know that the administration considered all Americans’ call records ‘relevant’ to terrorism investigations under section 215 of the Patriot Act–and Obama liked it that way.  Still, Obama pointed out, his review group on NSA surveillance found ‘no indication that this database has been intentionally abused.’ In the speech, Obama congratulated himself for maintaining a ‘healthy skepticism towards our surveillance programs.'”

Venezuelan president Maduro gets power to rule by decree

“Maduro requested a month ago to be given expanded power to enact laws without consulting congress for up to a year.  Maduro in recent days has ordered the military to seize dozens of appliance stores, slash prices on imported electronics and arrest more than 100 business owners for alleged price gouging.  the Venezuelan unit of General Motors was fined the equivalent of US$85,000 for allegedly overcharging and practicing ‘usury’ in the sale of car parts to local concessionaires. The government also asked Twitter to take down accounts of users posting the illegal black market exchange rate for Venezuela‘s bolivar currency, which is trading at about one-tenth of the official value.”

Bullish on Yellen: A Very Good Article From Forbes

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Yellen has a difficult job to do – to continue the failing stimulation of Western economies. But as we have written previously, she is a kind of sacrificial lamb, chosen because she is a ‘true believer.’ Long-term, Yellen will likely preside over at least the partial destruction of the system she has been named to lead.  But in the shorter term, the inflationary trend will continue and bubbles will grow larger. This is evidently the reason that Yellen has been elevated and this madness will not likely stop until there is a terrific equity blow-off.  Stay tuned.”
