California Dreamin’

“If you hosted a barbeque this past Labor Day weekend, you probably noticed that food prices are up. A hamburger costs 10.3% more than last year, and a hotdog 6.9% more.  But that’s nothing compared to the insane price inflation Casey Research Chief Economist Bud Conrad witnessed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a world-famous auto show and auction held in Monterey, California.  Below, Bud shares the details of his trip to Monterey, complete with photos and price tags of the most extravagant cars… including this 1963 Ferrari GTO that smashed the record for the most expensive car ever sold at auction. See if you can guess what it sold for before reading.”

40% of U.S. on Benefits; More Receive Benefits Than Full-Time-Employed

“Let’s take the 2012 welfare total of 109,631,000 and add the 6 million Obamacare Medicaid expansion and the 17 million who get Obamacare subsidies and you have a minimum of 126 million receiving some sort of means-tested welfare vs. 118.5 million who ‘usually’ work full time.  The 2013 US Population Estimate is 316 million.  Using 316 million as a rough estimate of the 2014 population (it would likely be higher) and 126 million on welfare (that number is also higher, perhaps way higher), about 40% of the country is on some form of means-tested welfare, up from 35.4% at the end of 2012.  Over 50% gets welfare or some other form of non-means-tested assistance.”

Home Ownership for Young Americans Is Falling. So What?

portallogo3

“The government owns Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It subsidizes mortgage rates: low. They should use the home they bought as a starter home as an investment property. This is sensible investing. But this is not what most people do.  Young people who live in areas in which they cannot afford to buy a home are making a mistake, to this extent: they could have begun to develop equity by purchasing the first home with a 30-year mortgage. That is a tremendous opportunity missed. But they were going to miss it anyway. They were not going to use the property as an investment property. They were going to get on the treadmill of social status, buying ever larger houses in ever nicer neighborhoods.”

Homeland Security Raids Homes Seizing Vehicles For EPA Violations

“As part of its mission to ‘protect the Homeland,’ the DHS has been busy seizing imported vehicles that don’t comply with safety and CO2 regulations.  Jennifer and Bill Brinkley were satisfied that their $60,000 dollar purchase of a Land Rover Defender on eBay complied with regulations because it fell into the exemption category of a vehicle 25 years or older.  However, when DHS agents turned up at the property, they compared the car’s Vehicle Identification Number to a list and immediately seized the Land Rover. The couple were not given ‘a chance to debate the issue.’  WBTV’s Steve Ohnesorge said DHS agents conducted ‘almost like a raid to get the car.'”

Germany’s Green Energy Revolution May Be on Verge of Failure

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“German officials and legislators created laws that ‘guaranteed a fixed feed-in tariff for 20 years, guaranteeing a fixed income’ for producers. Yet this guarantee was probably generated without doing a proper cost-benefit analysis. Now German taxpayers are stuck paying bills they cannot afford. Not only that, but Germany is closing coal and nuclear powered plants at an accelerated rate. And the new energy creation must be deployed via power lines that must either be built or upgraded. The result is that German consumers are facing ever higher energy bills, so much so that a rising percentage of Germans are choosing to have their power shut off rather than pay escalating fees.”

Vacuum sales rocket 44% as households scramble to buy before EU ban

“Online electrical retailer ao.com told This is Money it had its best ever day for vacuum cleaner sales last Friday as customers picked up a model with a power rating above 1,600 watts before they are outlawed by the EU. Sales were up 40 per cent last week on the same period last year.  Tesco also saw sales rocket by 44 per cent over the past two weeks as panicked customers rushed to get their hands on popular 2,000W models. The Cooperative Electrical shop reported a similar rise of 38 per cent.  Critics say cleaners satisfying the new rule may use less power, but householders will have to use them for longer so they are likely to use the same amount of electricity in the long run.”

EU to ban high-energy hair dryers, smartphones and kettles

“The power of hairdryers could be reduced by as much as 30 per cent in order to be more eco-friendly, a draft study commissioned by Brussels suggests, threatening many of the models favoured by hairdressers and consumers for speedy blow-dries.  Günther Oettinger, the German EU energy commissioner, said that legislation preventing consumers from buying high-wattage appliances was necessary to fight climate change.  Mark Coray, former president of the National Hairdressers’ Federation, said curbing the power of hairdryers would simply mean blow-drying took longer.”

British families billed £500 – to prevent Americans dodging tax

“Draconian legislation enacted in America – and aimed solely at helping American authorities collect tax from their overseas citizens – is translating into bills of hundreds of pounds for ordinary British families.  The total cost to British businesses and individuals of abiding by the new US laws, which became effective here only last month, is put at £1bn. Most people will pay unknowingly through higher fees for their investments, banking and other services. But for some families the costs are more explicit. And the invoices are starting to land on their doormats.  Tens of thousands of families are beginning to receive letters, and invoices, simply because they have established run-of-the-mill family trusts.”

Cairo property prices lead many to live in cemeteries

“Finding a home in a place where house prices are rising is a problem shared by many around the world.  In the Egyptian capital, Cairo, rising prices have forced almost two million people out of their homes over the years.  What is unique in this city, though, is that many now live in cemeteries.  The problem has existed for about 50 years and its one that the government is struggling to get to grips with.”

UK house prices in June reach new record high

“The Office for National Statistics data showed the annual growth rate had fallen from 10.4% in May, but prices rose by 0.5% on the month to a record £265,000 for the average property.  The amount paid by first-time buyers was 12% higher than in June 2013, at an average of £204,000 – the biggest rise since 2010.  Although recent figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders suggest first-time buyers have been re-entering the market, campaign groups warned that homes were getting further out of reach for those forced to rent.”
