Police Officer Fired for Repeated Use of Taser on Senior With Alzheimer’s

“Doug Martin, an officer in Peru, Ind., had been summoned to Miller’s Merry Manor on June 17, 2012, after a nurse called 911 for help in transporting a patient who had hit his roommate, a nurse and a nursing assistant.  Martin and his partner, Officer Jeremy Brindle, entered the Alzheimer’s ward to find 64-year-old James Howard sitting in a chair, wearing socks and nothing else. Howard refused the officers’ command to lie on a gurney and advanced toward Brindle, who tried to handcuff Howard.  When Brindle lost control of one of Howard’s wrists, Martin yelled ‘Taser’ and deployed it on Howard’s torso. Martin zapped Howard five times for a total of 31 seconds.”

News report on running man seeking help killed by North Carolina Police

“Officers responded to a 911 call of a suspicious man outside a woman’s home in Charlotte.  The man had been knocking on her door repeatedly.  Police say that when they got there, a man matching the caller’s description ran toward them.  One of the officers pulled out his stun gun, but it malfunctioned. Another officer then opened fire, police said.  Jonathan Ferrell died at the scene. He was shot several times.  He was unarmed.”

Licensed to Kill: Growing Phenomenon of Police Shooting Unarmed Citizens

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“This mindset that any challenge to police authority is a threat that needs to be ‘neutralized’ is a dangerous one that is part of a greater nationwide trend that sets law enforcement officers beyond the reach of the Fourth Amendment. Equally problematic is the trend in the courts that acquits officers involved in such shootings, letting them off with barely a slap to the wrists.  What exactly are we teaching these young officers in the police academy when the slightest thing, whether it be a hand in a pocket, a man running towards them, a flashlight on a keychain, or a dehumanizing stare can ignite a strong enough ‘fear for their safety’ to justify firing on an unarmed person?”

Charlotte police kill man running to them for help

“Police in North Carolina shot and killed a man running toward them Saturday morning — but he may have just been looking for help after a car wreck.  Officers responded to a ‘breaking and entering’ 911 call at a home in Charlotte.  The homeowner told dispatchers that a man had been knocking on her door repeatedly.  Police say that when they got to the scene, a man matching the caller’s description ran toward them.  One of the officers fired his stun gun, but it was ‘unsuccessful.’ Another officer then opened fire, police said. Jonathan Ferrell died at the scene. He was shot several times.  He was unarmed. Police now believe Ferrell was seeking assistance after crashing his car.”

Bexar County deputy shoots and kills unarmed motorist

“A Bexar county sheriff’s office deputy is suspended for ten days after he shot and killed an unarmed motorist after a minor car crash in San Antonio.  Bexar County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Paul Berry says the off-duty officer left his job as a security guard in the early morning hours on Saturday.  Soon after, the deputy and another man apparently had a minor car crash.  According to Berry,  the two pulled over and started arguing. Berry says the officer feared for his safety, pulled out his weapon and fired multiple shots, hitting and killing the other driver.  Berry says the officer was wearing his uniform at the time, and he says the other driver was unarmed.”

Chicago Police Superintendent Says Cops Will Shoot Gun Carrying Citizens

“Chicago police superintendent Garry McCarthy is not happy about the new concealed carry laws in Illinois.  And now he is predicting that police will shoot citizens who are lawfully carrying firearms.  While every cop has a right to protect himself, this bold statement by McCarthy is obviously meant to intimidate gun owners who choose to exercise their rights.  This threat that cops may mistakenly shoot a gun carrying citizen is just another attempt to fight the concealed carry laws that Illinois has long been deprived of.  McCarthy would not say what specific training officers will undertake if any. However, he did admit that in the past his department has made mistakes in shooting unarmed civilians.”

Dealing with Cops These Days

“In a word – don’t.  You are dealing with perhaps the worst possible tag-team combination: Someone with legal power over you who is held to a different – and far more lenient – standard than you are. A cop can: Commit assault with near-impunity. He can draw his firearm and point it at you – even shoot at you – without fear of life-altering consequences – such as a felony record for brandishing and reckless endangerment.  He can rely on his cronies and the system to cover up or minimize his errors of judgment, even when they involve serious harm to innocent people such as yourself. His word will be treated as legal tender in court – while yours is considered suspect. His very person is anointed.”

Phoenix Police “Help” a Man to Death

“There are circumstances in which people might be tempted to seek the help of police officers. If they do so, they should understand that police are neither trained to help, nor are they expected to. They are trained, equipped, and prepared to employ aggressive violence against anybody who doesn’t submit to them immediately and without reservation — including the people whom they are supposedly there to ‘help.’ This was memorably illustrated by the murder of Michael Ruiz, an emotionally disturbed father of two from Phoenix, Arizona, by the police who had arrived on the scene to ‘help’ him.”

Man dead after police called for help taser, choke & drag him down a staircase

Man dead after police called for help taser, choke & drag him down a staircase

“Michael Angel Ruiz had a history of drug addiction. On July 28, for reasons unknown, he climbed onto the roof of his apartment. Witnesses called the police to protect his safety. This turned out to have been a fatal decision. First they tased him several times on the roof. He finally complied and hopped down. Cops immediately swarmed him and put him in a choke-hold. He remained in a choke-hold for at least three minutes. Michael Ruiz, now fully restrained, was dragged down the concrete stairs on his face. They allowed his head to dangle and thump against every stair. Video shows him lifelessly suffering head trauma on the descent down the stair case.”

“Why Did You Call the Police? They Don’t Help”

“In May of last year, Los Angeles resident Veronica Cornejo called the Sheriff’s Office to report that her mentally ill brother was severely agitated and potentially dangerous to himself and his family. The department responded by sending three deputies to the residence, who broke into the home without warning, drew their firearms, and dragged all five members of the family outside. After Veronica began to cry and plead with the deputy not to beat her ailing father, he threw the man on top of his daughter and then all three deputies began to beat both of them. Three members of the family were arrested for resisting arrest. The cases were dismissed.”
