Australia to adopt tougher sanctions against Russia over Ukraine

“Australia will escalate its sanctions against Russia, with the government barring arms exports to the country and denying Russian state-owned banks new access to the Australian capital market.  Tony Abbott told parliament on Monday that Australia would follow the European Union in adopting tougher sanctions against Russia, accusing Moscow of ‘deliberately and now openly violating Ukrainian sovereignty’.  The new sanctions will ban arms exports to Russia, bar Russian state-owned banks from further access to the Australian capital market and rule out oil and gas exports to the country.”

Australia to Fly Guns and Ammunition Into Iraq

“An Australian military aircraft will soon fly guns and ammunition to the northern Iraqi city of Irbil to help Kurds fight Islamic State militants.  Prime Minister Tony Abbott said his government would join the United States, Britain, Canada, France and Italy in delivering rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and assault rifle ammunition at the request of the U.S. and Iraqi governments.  The opposition Labor Party, which opposed Australia sending 2,000 troops to back U.S. and British forces in the 2003 Iraq invasion, has supported the involvement in delivering weapons and munitions to the Kurds.  Abbott did not believe Australia’s military involvement in Iraq would increase the domestic terrorist threat.

Pushback as US Expands Surveillance, Taxing Authority?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The suspicion among a number of expatriates is that renunciations are growing at a rapid clip and US officials are doing what they can to slow the exodus – by complicating regulations and more importantly by raising the cost.  Between the passport system (which only came fully into being after World War II), Coast Guard policies and the US projection of its taxing authority around the world, US officials – and the Anglosphere generally – seem determined to keep a much closer eye on citizens and their financial affairs. While this sort of approach is to date a US-centric one, there are treaties now being considered that will create a US-style approach around the world.”

The IMF, the SDR, and the Dollar: One Big Happy

portallogo3

“Lyndon Johnson was fighting two wars, both of which America lost: the war in Vietnam and the war on poverty. He lowered marginal income tax rates in 1964 to 70% from 99%. He refused to raise taxes. The phrase was popular: ‘guns and butter.’ By 1969, there was price inflation. There was also a run on the federal government’s gold supply, because foreign governments demanded payment, which they could do under Bretton Woods. France was the main ‘culprit.’ The U.S. Treasury was experiencing a classic bank run.  Here was what the International Monetary Fund did, according to Wikipedia. It created a new fiat non-currency, the SDR.”

NATO: The Broken Promise Has Backfired–Ukraine

“In 1989, James Baker III, who had been Reagan’s Chief of Staff, and who was now Bush’s Secretary of State, sat down with Gorbachev. He made a promise: if the USSR took apart the Warsaw Pact, NATO would not move one inch closer to the USSR. In 1991, the USSR was officially dissolved. A new Russian state replaced it — much smaller.  Clinton broke the promise in 1996. NATO has moved steadily eastward, bringing in mini-states that the U.S. government does not need to defend. NATO should have been dissolved no later than 1992.  We are now trying to bring Ukraine into NATO. That has gone too far for Putin, as well as the eastern Ukraine.”

UN Grabs for the Internet: Toward “Global Governance”

“In a recent essay entitled, ‘The Strategic Significance of the Internet Commons,’ former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff describes cyberspace and the Internet as a ‘global commons’ that must come under ‘global governance.’ This is the latest salvo in an ongoing campaign by a disparate congeries of internationalists, socialists, communists, and jihadists to turn over control of the Internet to some sort of regime under the United Nations.  Unbeknownst to most Americans, the effort to transfer that control to the UN — including Internet taxing, censoring, and surveillance powers — is already far advanced.”

The US government can brand you a terrorist based on a Facebook post

It was confirmed earlier this month that the FBI shares its master watchlist, the Terrorist Screening Database, with at least 22 foreign governments, countless federal agencies, state and local law enforcement, plus private contractors.  The standards are so low that the US government’s guidelines specifically allow for a single, uncorroborated source of information – including a Facebook or Twitter post – to serve as the basis for placing you on its master watchlist.  Of the 680,000 individuals on that FBI master list, roughly 40% have ‘no recognized terrorist group affiliation’, according to the Intercept, but they are still branded as suspected terrorists.”

Dr. Kissinger on the ‘New World Order’ – Editorial or Policy Statement?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Dr. Henry Kissinger has written an article entitled, ‘Henry Kissinger on the Assembly of a New World Order’ posted at The Wall Street Journal. It’s an important article written by an important man. Dr. Kissinger, the Journal tells us, ‘served as national security adviser and secretary of state under Presidents Nixon and Ford.’ And his article is ‘adapted from his book ‘World Order” – apparently set for a September 9th unveiling from publisher Penguin Press. You really have to read between the lines to understand what Dr. Kissinger is saying. Kissinger, probably with the consent of others, has apparently decided to send a message about what must be done to alleviate the world’s current perilous situation.”

Sending Money Home: Technology or Bureaucracy?

“Some of the world’s poorest people depend on the money they receive from relatives working in developed countries. In fact, this money dwarfs the world’s official foreign aid budget, and the gap is increasing.  In 2011, total private flows of aid totaled $680 billion—almost five times the $138 billion official figure.  This increase in private aid is great news for all concerned.  Except, perhaps, for bureaucrats, who are loath to let good deeds go unpunished. World Bank and United Nations bean counters are denouncing remittance transfer fees as exploitative. The U.S. C.F.P.B. has issued a rule to crack down on supposed fraud and exploitation affecting the existing remittance-transfer infrastructure.”

Senator calls for Burger King boycott over tax inversion move to Canada

“The push for a boycott comes as Burger King plans to renounce its corporate citizenship in the United States and reincorporate in Canada.  Known as a ‘tax inversion,’ the move will allow Burger King to evade the 35% corporate tax rate in the US – the highest in the world, though most large corporations end up paying a significantly lower rate. In Canada, the corporate tax rate is 15%.  Sen. Sherrod Brown said a global minimum tax needs to be implemented to prevent companies from avoiding taxes.  Burger King is not currently being run by an American firm.  ‘The private equity fund that currently runs Burger King, 3G Capital, is Brazilian,” wrote Mark Gongloff.”
