Obama Has Decided That It Is Safer To Buy Congress Than To Go It Alone

withkitties_150_1202

“The White House will bribe, cajole, and intimidate the Congress. The regime’s argument will be that with America’s prestige and credibility on the line, Congress must support the President. The President and Secretary of State have made unequivocal statements of Assad’s guilt and their determination to punish Assad. Given Washington’s insanity, the way Washington punishes Assad for (allegedly) killing Syrians with chemical weapons is for Washington to kill more Syrians with cruise missiles.  If this doesn’t make sense to you, you don’t belong in Obama’s government or in the American media, and you could never be a neoconservative.”

Syria asks United Nations to ‘prevent Western aggression’

“Syria’s UN representative Bashar al-Jaafari said the government ‘calls on the UN secretary general to assume his responsibilities… and to make efforts to prevent any aggression against Syria,’ the state news agency SANA reported.  The letter also urged the United Nations to help seek a ‘peaceful political solution to the crisis’ in Syria, where more than 110,000 people have been killed in violence since an uprising against the regime began in March 2011.  The report came as Russia adopted an increasingly antagonistic posture against the use of force in Syria, further beefing up its naval presence in the region with the dispatch of an intelligence ship to the Mediterranean.”

Drudge Poll: 91% Say “Stay Out of Syria.”

“This is not a scientific poll, but Obama’s spinmeisters had better pay attention to it. Obama drew a macho-man line in the sand with his vow to take action if Syria used chemical weapons. What’s a would-be macho guy to do? Go to Congress? Yes, say the voters. What will Congress do? It will put its collective finger in the wind. The general public seems split.  As long as American missiles kill innocent Syrian women and children from on high, half of the voters are content. After all, Assad’s weapons killed innocent women and children. Half the voters think the proper response is an eye for an eye: more dead women and children. That will show Assad who is in charge.”

The army pulled the trigger, but the West loaded the gun

“To focus on the actions of the security forces alone, on what they did with their trigger fingers yesterday, is to miss the bigger picture; it is to overlook the question of where the military regime got the moral authority to clamp down on its critics so violently in the name of preserving its undemocratic grip on power. It got it from the West, including from so-called Western liberals and human-rights activists. The moral ammunition for yesterday’s massacres was provided by the very politicians and campaigners now crying crocodile tears over the sight of hundreds of dead Egyptians.”

U.S. Officials Are Above the Law of Nations and Ordinary Laws

google-search-header2

“With regard to Nuremberg ideas of law and sanctions against aggressive war, the U.S. government considers itself above all that. It’s a case of ‘now you see it, now you don’t’. If the U.S. decides to bomb somebody and wants to mention Nuremberg as a justification (or its equivalent like a charge of killing one’s own people), now you see it. If it decides its own officials can get away with aggression against Iraq, now you don’t.  The fact of the matter is that the U.S. government regards itself as a law unto itself. It is the supreme and only superpower, by virtue of which what it says, goes. And what it says is law, it also claims.”

Naomi Wolf: Britain’s Retreat from Free Speech

“Perhaps the most dismaying aspect of the Snowden story has been the relative silence of other news outlets, in Britain and America, as the national-security state literally comes to the Guardian’s door. Instead, we have Michael Grunwald, a senior correspondent at Time magazine, posting on Twitter (and then deleting): ‘I can’t wait to write a defense of the drone strike that takes out Julian Assange.’ As the nineteenth-century German poet Heinrich Heine presciently observed, where they burn books – or smash computer hard drives, one might add – soon they will burn people.  Do other British publishers really believe that silence will protect them from the slippery slope?”

On Obama’s Plan, a Message Emerges in Israel: Stay Quiet

“Israel has a powerful American lobby with bipartisan strength that could be uniquely positioned to help the White House shore up support in Congress. Yet there were no outward signs on Sunday that Israel would attempt to influence the outcome, and numerous experts on the Israel-American relationship said it would be deeply dangerous to try. ‘It would be a mistake to overplay the Israeli interest,’ said Itamar Rabinovich, who was Israel’s ambassador to the United States and also its chief negotiator with Syria in the 1990s. ‘It’s bad for Israel that the average American gets it into his or her mind that boys are again sent to war for Israel. They have to be sent to war for America.'”

The Tipping Point

C4SSLogo22

“Jesus said that when a garment gets so old, attempting to patch it with new cloth will just tear it up worse. The authoritarian state seems to be reaching that point, beyond which any attempt to patch it up or prolong its life just hastens its demise. The interesting thing about the federal prosecutions of Aaron Swartz and Chelsea Manning is that the vindictive approach to piling up charges and seeking maximum sentences were calculated attempts to send a message to anyone else contemplating sabotage against the information control regime. But those attempts have done more to inspire sympathy among the uncommitted and galvanize the information freedom movement than to terrify would-be leakers.”

France will ‘prove’ Syria regime behind chemical attack

“France will hand over evidence to lawmakers on Monday proving President Bashar al-Assad’s regime was behind last month’s chemical weapons attack in Syria, a government source told AFP. ‘It will be a set of evidence of different kinds that will allow the regime to be clearly identified as responsible for the August 21 chemical attack,’ the source said.  Another government source said the evidence would include ‘declassified secret documents’ and that ‘some of them could be made public’.  France has become Washington’s main ally in the Syria crisis after the British parliament in a shock move rejected plans for military action mooted by Washington.”

Deadly Contradictions: Patent Privilege vs. “Saving Lives”

C4SSLogo22

“Entrenching patent monopolies contradicts Obama’s stated goals of ‘saving the world’s children from preventable deaths’ and ‘realizing the promise of an AIDS-free generation.’ This contradiction between the TPP and the U.S. government’s stated commitment to public health has been apparent for a while. Back in 2011, Doctors Without Borders executive director Sophie DeLaunay said that the TPP would create ‘a fundamental contradiction between U.S. trade policy and U.S. commitments to global health.’  Contradictions like this are nothing new for the state.”
