Surrounded By Protesters, Trump Backpedals On Obamacare Repeal, Clinton Prosecution

Tens of thousands of protesters swarmed Trump Tower, held back by barricades, while billionaire and president-elect Donald Trump continued to mull over his cabinet selections. Earlier, Trump had stated that although his campaign had promised to repeal Obamacare entirely, it would instead be repealed and replaced with a new law that maintains Obamacare’s key provisions: namely, that insurance companies would be required to cover individuals with pre-existing conditions and to cover young adults on their parents’ policies until the age of 26.

Trump also indicated that his campaign’s promise to prosecute former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for numerous instances of alleged official misconduct during her State Department tenure would be considered a low priority.

Poll: Clinton should release transcripts of purported Wall Street speeches

“Nearly two-thirds of voters think Mrs. Clinton should make public those speeches, including three she delivered at Goldman Sachs after leaving the State Department. Mrs. Clinton was paid $625,000 for those speeches, and her refusal to make their content public seems to play into the broader idea that she is dishonest and has something to hide, analysts sTwo-thirds of voters say Clinton should release transcripts of Wall Street speechesay. The former secretary of state has brushed off calls to release the transcripts despite heavy pressure from her presidential primary rival, Sen. Bernard Sanders. Mrs. Clinton has been questioned repeatedly on the issue but has refused to budge.”

Trump in Line to Receive Top U.S. Intelligence Secrets

“Trump has at times questioned the U.S. role in NATO, called Russian President Vladimir Putin ‘a strong leader,’ and said he’s ‘in that camp’ that believes torture yields valuable information from detainees.  The Democratic front-runner, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is a veteran recipient of government secrets, although Republicans contend she broke the law because classified information was included in messages on her private e-mail system. The FBI is investigating the matter.”

Highway bill revives the Export-Import Bank after only five months

“A measure extending the bank through 2019 was included in a massive transportation bill that cleared the House and Senate Thursday and is expected to be signed by President Barack Obama. The small federal agency makes and guarantees loans to help foreign customers buy U.S. exports. Business groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say it’s necessary for U.S. competitiveness, since most overseas competitors rely on similar government help.  But conservatives decry the bank as corporate welfare and government interference in the free market.  A rarely used procedure in the House forced a floor vote on the bank over the objections of top GOP leaders.”

41% of Trump Voters, 19% of Democrats Want to Bomb ‘Aladdin’ Country

“41% of his voters think Japanese internment was a good thing, to 37% who don’t. And 41% of his supporters would favor bombing Agrabah to only 9% who are opposed to doing that. Agrabah is the country from Aladdin. Overall 30% of Republican primary voters say they support bombing it to 13% who are opposed. We asked the same question of Democrats, and 36% of them opposed bombing Agrabah to 19% in support.”

Ron Paul: What Are The Chances For Peace in 2016?

“Each year more than one trillion dollars goes up in smoke. More accurately, it is stolen from the middle and working classes and shipped off to the one percent. I am talking about the massive yearly bill to maintain the US empire.  None of this trillion dollars taken from us is spent to keep us safe, despite what politicians say. In fact, this great rip-off actually makes us less safe and more vulnerable to a terrorist attack thanks to resentment overseas at our interventions and to the blowback it produces.  The money is spent to maintain existing conflicts and to create new areas of conflict overseas that in turn feeds the demands for more military spending.”

James Bovard: Budget bill leaves no boondoggle behind

“While Congress made scant effort to protect average Americans from rampaging regulators, it hustled to include a provision requesting the Capitol Police to permit sledding on Capitol Hill.  House Freedom Caucus member Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., summarized the GOP leadership’s wacky reasoning: ‘Give the Democrats what they want now so next time they won’t want as much.’ Republicans have been thunderously promising for decades to protect Americans against federal waste, fraud and abuse. At this rate, Republicans’ credibility gap will soon rival the $18 trillion federal debt.”

Admit It. You Just Want Your Own Dictator

“Many of the same people anxious about the authoritarian overtones of Trump’s appeal were unconcerned about the intense adulation that adoring crowds showered on Barack Obama in 2008, though the spectacle featured similarly troubling signs—the iconography, the messianic messaging and the implausible promises of government-produced comfort and safety. Just as President Trump fans will judge every person on how nice or mean he or she is to Trump, so, too, those rooting against Obama were immediately branded unpatriotic or racist.  Obama’s inevitable failure to live up to the hype has had many repercussions—and none of them healthy.”

Jeffrey Tucker: Two Faces, One Totalitarianism

“What does totalitarianism mean? Ludwig von Mises in 1919 described it as the ideology that admits no limits on the power and competence of the state. There is no aspect of life that is conceptually beyond the reach of the political sphere. That is to say, the state is potentially or actually master of the totality of society.  Each side in the great ideological divide of our time admits some limits of state power. Working together, however, each giving what the other wants in a great political exchange, we might have that real thing: a total state.”

Americans: ‘Online Surveillance Is O.K. For Most’

“A majority of Americans say they support warrantless government surveillance of the Internet communications of U.S. citizens, according to a new [AP] poll.  It’s at least somewhat important for the government to sacrifice freedoms to ensure safety, most say in the survey. Majorities both of Republicans (67 percent) and Democrats (55 percent) favor government surveillance of Americans’ Internet activities to watch for suspicious activity that might be connected to terrorism. Independents are more divided, with 40 percent in favor and 35 percent opposed. Only a third of Americans under 30, but nearly two-thirds 30 and older, support warrantless surveillance.”
