Lawmakers Vote to Let Obama Take Your Passport Without Trial

“The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted to give the Obama administration the unilateral power to strip you of your passport and right to travel without a trial or even criminal charges. The scheme does not even include a way to challenge your status as a non-person involuntarily trapped inside U.S. borders on orders from the secretary of state. Lawmakers, some of whom could themselves be caught in the dragnet along with myriad administration officials, praised the effort as a way to stop alleged terrorists from travelling. But critics said it was yet another attack on the fundamental rights of Americans, such as due-process protections, and that it must be resisted.”

Obama renewing call to reauthorize Export-Import Bank

“President Barack Obama is ramping up pressure on Congress to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank.  The obscure federal agency’s charter expired last month after lawmakers refused to reauthorize it. The bank underwrites loans to foreign companies purchasing American products, but conservatives call it corporate welfare.  Obama on Wednesday plans to meet at the White House with owners of small- and medium-size businesses that have benefited from the bank. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has floated the possibility of attaching the bank’s reauthorization to a six-year highway and transit bill.”

U.S. presidential election already fueled by $377 million

“The major parties’ top presidential candidates in the fundraising race – Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican Jeb Bush – are collecting cash in the huge amounts needed to fuel the extensive political organizations they are building for the 2016 campaign.  Clinton’s campaign is spending money at a rapid clip, according to initial fundraising reports filed Wednesday with federal regulators.  The former first lady and front-runner in the Democratic race has paid out 40 percent of the $47 million in donations that she amassed by the end of June, employing some 364 people and building infrastructure across the country in preparation for next year’s general election.

Lindsey Graham: Send 20,000 Troops to Iraq, Syria to Defeat ISIS

“GOP presidential candidate and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham has called for sending 20,000 troops to Iraq and Syria to defeat the Islamic State.  Graham believes the administration should increase the number of military advisers in Iraq from 3,500 to 10,000 to include special operations forces to help the Iraqi military on the front lines and improve the accuracy of airstrikes.  He said that a similar number of troops should be sent to Syria to assist regional forces and combat the Islamic State (ISIS). He reserved particular criticism for Hillary Clinton and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, both of whom have suggested that the United States could avoid deploying troops to the region.”

U.S. House defeats bid to withdraw troops from Iraq

“The House voted 288-139 to defeat the concurrent resolution, which would have required Obama to remove the troops within 30 days, or by the end of 2015 if the administration determined it was not safe to do so within the 30-day timeframe.  The ‘yes’ votes were cast by 120 Democrats and 19 Republicans, while the ‘no’s’ came from 222 Republicans and 66 Democrats.  The lawmakers said they hoped their introduction of the measure, allowed under the War Powers Authority, would lead to a broader debate on a formal authorization for the use of military force for the campaign against Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria.”

Philip Giraldi: Where Are They Now?

“The United States already has by far the per capita largest prison population of any developed country but I am probably one of the few Americans who on this Independence Day would like to see a lot more people in prison, mostly drawn from politicians and senior bureaucrats who have long believed that their status makes them untouchable, giving them license to steal and even to kill. The sad fact is that while whistleblowers have been imprisoned for revealing government criminality, no one in the federal bureaucracy has ever actually been punished for the crimes of torture, kidnapping and assassination committed during the George W. Bush and Barack H. Obama presidencies.”

For Terrorist Fearmongers, It’s Always the Scariest Time Ever

“Here we are 14 years after 9/11, and it’s still always the worst threat ever in all of history, never been greater. If we always face the greatest threat ever, then one of two things is true: 1) fearmongers serially exaggerate the threat for self-interested reasons, or 2) they’re telling the truth — the threat is always getting more severe, year after year — which might mean we should evaluate the wisdom of ‘terrorism’ policies that constantly make the problem worse. Whatever else is true, the people who should have the least credibility on the planet are the Lindsey Grahams and Dianne Feinsteins who have spent the last 15 years exploiting the terror threat in order to terrorize the American population.”

Can you tell the difference between Bush and Obama on the Patriot Act?

Dick Cheney and George W Bush were widely condemned by Democrats for their baseless fear-mongering to pressure members of Congress into passing expansive surveillance laws that infringed on Americans’ civil liberties.  See if you can tell the difference between the Obama administration’s statements about the renewal of the Patriot Act and those from the Bush administration when they wanted Congress to renew some of the controversial mass surveillance authorities they passed after 9/11.”

Robert Ringer: Why Slavery Is Here to Stay

rringer-11

“Dear reader, I suggest that you sit back and enjoy the upcoming campaign festivities for the next year-and-a-half. They promise to be reality TV at its best.  Your biggest challenge is to not get so caught up in the playacting that you begin to take it seriously. After all, no matter which scoundrel ends up winning the throne in 2016, you already know, based on past history, that there will be no fundamental changes in the way government operates. Guaranteed! And if you’re wondering about the fate of shrimp on treadmills and obese lesbians, rest assured that they will once again become important political projects right after the current presidential soap opera comes to an end.”

GOP Senator: Phone Records Not Enough, Calls For NSA Expansion

“The Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said on Wednesday that the NSA’s metadata collection program needs to be expanded, adding that he was ‘shocked’ to learn ‘how little data’ was actually being collected.  Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has called for a full reauthorization of the Patriot Act, while Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) said he would lead the charge against reauthorization of the bill.  A new bill, the USA Freedom Act, would reportedly end the massive collection of telephone metadata in the U.S. But Corker said he opposes the legislation because the metadata collecting program ‘needs to be ramped up hugely.'”
