Stockman: GOP made budget deal a ‘joke and betrayal’

“Stockman added that the budget deal means lawmakers would take a ‘two-year vacation’ from dealing with the country’s fiscal situation and revisit it in 2015 at around the same time as the Iowa straw polls. Without an incumbent in the presidential race, both political parties will be too busy to touch the budget, he said.  Stockman compared the accord to ‘kicking the can’ into ‘low Earth orbit.’  The two-year deal averts deeper cuts to military spending, but Stockman said that’s where lawmakers should have looked for savings. The U.S. no longer faces threats from developed countries and has been ‘fired as the world’s policemen,’ he said.”

House Votes to Repeal Sequester, Give Obama Relief

“House Republicans fell in line. They voted to drop the sequester that Obama had agreed to in 2011.  This was a major symbolic victory for the Democrats. The Republican leadership is no longer a threat on the deficit issue.  With the deficit massive, the spending out of control, and the Federal Reserve pumping in $1 trillion a year, the vote in the House was symbolic. It was a bunch of drunken sailors voting for 150-proof white lightning rather than 90-proof Jack Daniels.  The public does not care. Neither do the economists. As long as interest rates are low, and the economy is growing, the voters are uninterested. They respond to pain. So does Congress. There is not much pain these days.”

“Close Guantánamo Prison!” — Karzai’s Ultimatum to Obama

“Afghanistan’s leader, Hamid Karzai, has told Obama that he will not sign an agreement that will let Obama keep troops in Afghanistan unless Obama agrees to close the prison on the island of Cuba.  Here is his threat. Either Obama does what he told the voters in 2008 that he would do if they elected him, or else Karzai will not sign an agreement to let Obama keep American troops in Afghanistan after 2014, as Obama says he is ready and willing to do.  So, Obama has a choice: (1) close the 12-year Bush-Cheney prison or (2) end the 12-year Bush-Cheney war.”

“The artist who created the iconic ‘Hope’ posters during President Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign says he’d choose a different caption now.  A camera crew from TMZ asked Shepard Fairey if he’d use the same word underneath his portrait of then-Sen. Obama, given his track record as president.  The 43-year-old Fairey paused for a moment as he and a companion got into a waiting vehicle.  ‘I’d put a few different ones,’ Shepard said, adding that some of them may not be fit for print.  Then he turned back around to face the crew, thinking of an idea.  ‘How about drones?’ Fairey said.”

But hardly anyone knows how to enroll yet. The computer programs are not ready. The confusion has not yet hit. The sense of betrayal has not yet hit Obama’s poll numbers.  If Republicans can hold out long enough for resentment against the program to spread, they win politically. They can hold out longer. But at some point, they will capitulate. That’s what the uncertainty is all about. It’s about the timing of their capitulation.”

These businesses are seeking to manipulate the political process to disadvantage their existing and future small competitors.”

Parting Ways with the American People
