The Rise of the Antiwar Libertarian Republicans

“If you’re among the majority of war-weary Americans who oppose any sort of military intervention in Syria, thank libertarian Republican lawmakers Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan.  If the House and Senate vote against authorizing war next week, the efforts by these two guys will have been instrumental. Indeed, their outspoken, principled pushback is part of the reason that President Barack Obama—the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner—hasn’t already pursued some sort of strike ‘just muscular enough not to get mocked‘ by the world while not inciting retaliation by Bashar al-Assad’s allies, Russia and Iran.”

Nancy Pelosi sends fifth letter on Syria

“Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a fifth letter to Democratic colleagues in a week in an attempt to bolster support for a measure to authorize a U.S. strike in Syria.  In the letter sent Saturday, Pelosi (D-Calif.) highlighted statements supporting the strike by President Barack Obama and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.).  In earlier letters, Pelosi emphasized the importance of the strike and has told members she will be flexible about the eventual language in a use-of-force authorization.  Pelosi also drew attention to Obama’s remarks that he had not set a red line in Syria, but that Congress set one in the 2003 Syria Accountability Act.”

Al Franken Leaning Toward Supporting Syria Resolution

“Sen. Al Franken (D., Minn.) on Friday said he was leaning toward supporting a resolution authorizing military action in Syria, giving a lift to Obama administration efforts to build support for a strike that U.S. President Barack Obama has sought in spite of widespread unpopularity.  ‘To me, there is enough evidence that there has been a chemical weapons attack; that it was authorized by the regime and I believe that we have to demonstrate that you can’t do that,  so I’m leaning that direction,’ Mr. Franken told reporters Friday after a closed-door briefing for lawmakers.”

Ralph Nader: Stopping Barry O’Bomber’s Rush to War

“Dear President Obama:  Little did your school boy chums in Hawaii, watching you race up and down the basketball court, know how prescient they were when they nicknamed you ‘Barry O’Bomber.’  Little did your fellow Harvard Law Review editors, who elected you to lead that venerable journal, ever imagine that you could be a president who chronically violates the Constitution, federal statutes, international treaties and the separation of power at depths equal to or beyond the George W. Bush regime.  Nor would many of the voters who elected you in 2008 have conceived that your foreign policy would rely so much on brute military force at the expense of systemically waging peace.”

14 Principled Anti-War Celebrities We Fear May Have Been Kidnapped

“Our government is yet again marching us towards a war of choice in the Middle East and our non-partisan, peace-loving celebrities have gone missing since late 2008. We fear the worst. The only explanation for their continued silence must be a large, organized kidnapping. To whoever is responsible for their disappearance, please post pictures of them holding a recent newspaper so we know they’re okay.”

Professor Francis Boyle: IMPEACH OBAMA NOW!

Professor Francis Boyle: IMPEACH OBAMA NOW!

“You’ve seen them all over the country. Overpasses full of signs and people calling for the Impeachment of President Obama. Some have even got arrested for expressing this action against America’s Commander-in-Chief. Like presidents before him Obama is facing congress to engage yet another sovereign nation in acts of war.  The last time Professor Francis Boyle joined us he had returned from convicting former president Bush of War Crimes at an international tribunal.  Now, Professor Boyle is calling for Obama’s Impeachment and he is here to talk to us today to provide you with his reasons why.  Dr. Francis Boyle, a professor of international law at the University of Illinois College of Law.”

Syria strike may hinge on Nancy Pelosi

“While Boehner backs military action — a rare point of agreement with Pelosi in the hyper-partisan House — it’s unclear how many votes he will deliver from his party members. Passage may well rely on strong support by the president’s own party.  Pushing for military action against Syria, even in a limited way, would seem an awkward position for Pelosi, whose party won control of the House in 2006 by tapping into public frustration with President George W. Bush over the war in Iraq.  Her view that Obama could order a strike on Syria without congressional approval also puts her at odds with a number of fellow Democrats.”

US Senate panel approves use of force against Syria

“President Barack Obama’s plan to conduct punishing military strikes on Syria passed its first congressional hurdle Wednesday, paving the way for a full Senate debate on the use of force.  The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved an amended resolution 10-7, with one senator, the chamber’s newest member Edward Markey, voting present, that authorizes US military intervention with a 90-day deadline and bars American boots on the ground for combat purposes.  ‘What we’ve done today is a step in the right direction. I hope it makes a safer world,’ said Senator Dick Durbin.  The chamber’s number two Democrat voted against the war in Iraq, but he insisted that ‘this is different.'”

Matt Drudge Breaks Up With Republicans, Joins Libertarians

“Matt Drudge, the founder of the enormously popular conservative news aggregator DrudgeReport.com, tweeted today that since there are no real differences between Democrats and Republicans the only two real political parties are Authoritarians and Libertarians. ‘It’s now Authoritarian vs Libertarian,’ Drudge tweeted. ‘Since Democrats vs. Republicans has been obliterated, no real difference between parties…’ Drudge also asks his followers why anyone would still vote Republican. ‘Who are they?!’ he asks. ‘Raised taxes; marching us off to war again; approves more NSA snooping.'”
