Jay Leno’s Gitmo Solution

Jay Leno’s Gitmo Solution

“President Obama held a press conference earlier today, and he said he still wants to close the Guantanamo Bay prison facility, but he doesn’t know how to do it. He should do what he always does: declare it a small business and tax it out of existence. It will be gone in a minute. Be gone in a minute! One month! Be out of there!”

Republican Lawmakers Urge Obama To Use ‘Combatant Status’ For Bombing Suspect

Logo-3

“Senator Lindsay Graham argues that because the public safety could be at risk (because there could be more bombs in place that could go off and/or more bombers who intend to kill still at large) that we do not read a terrorist suspect their Miranda rights (right to remain silent, etc.).  The problem with this line of thinking is that we are assuming the ‘suspect’ is guilty without proof and so are denying him his rights based on the assumption that he is guilty until proven innocent. Senator Lindsay Graham wants to throw that American principle out the window and replace it with a fear driven, paranoia based legal system that does the opposite of what America stands for.”

Federal Government Rating Hits New Low Among Americans

“For the first time since Barack Obama became president, more Democrats say they have an unfavorable view of the federal government in Washington than a favorable view (51% unfavorable vs. 41% favorable). Favorable opinions of the federal government among Republicans, already quite low in 2012 (20% favorable), have fallen even further, to 13% currently.  Notably, politically divided state governments get positive ratings from members of both parties. In the 13 states with divided governments – those in which the governor and a majority of state legislators are from different parties – majorities of both Republicans and Democrats express favorable opinions.”

Obama Budget Contains Middle Class Income Tax Hike

Logo-3

“Chained CPI means the Obama budget contains a tax increase on 100 percent of middle class taxpayers (anyone who pays the federal income tax).  Many other tax provisions—the standard deduction, the personal exemption, PEP and Pease, IRA and 401(k) contribution limits, and many others—are also tied to how CPI is measured. Chained CPI as a stand-alone measure (that is, not paired with tax relief of equal or greater size) is a tax increase and a Taxpayer Protection Pledge violation. Various reports peg the tax increase amount as exceeding $100 billion over the next decade.”

First-ever cyberattack on US election points to broad vulnerabilities

“The fake requests for ballots targeted the Aug. 14 statewide primary and included requests for Democratic ballots in one congressional district and Republican ballots in two state House districts, according to a recent Miami Herald report.  The fake requests were done so clumsily that they were red-flagged and did not foul up the election. In any case, they would not have been enough to change the outcome. But now confirmed as the first cyberattack aimed at election fraud, the incident is further evidence that the vote-counting process is vulnerable, particularly as elections become more reliant on the Internet.”

Nevada bill would legalize gambling on federal elections

“If one Nevada lawmaker has his way, visitors to Sin City will soon be able to bet on the next presidential election.  Las Vegas Democrat Tick Segerblom on Monday introduced a bill in the Nevada state Senate that would legalizing betting on federal elections.  SB 418 would revise the state’s definition of sports betting ‘to include wagers with respect to the outcome of a federal election.’  ‘We’re in a competitive environment,’ Segerblom explained to KVVU. ‘We’re basically competing against the world, and I think we need to start looking beyond what we’ve done.'”

Obama would rather look stupid than interfere with the flow of cash to drug-war profiteers

couch1

“The White House spends all year traveling around the country talking about their ‘third way’ and their ’21st Century Drug Policy’ — that the focus needs to be on treatment and that we can’t arrest our way out of drug problems. That there’s too much focus on incarceration.  At the same time, they’re dealing with severe national budget pressures, so you’d think this would be the perfect excuse to actually significantly reduce spending on things like domestic drug law enforcement. Well, the budget for domestic drug law enforcement was 9.4 billion in 2012, and they’re asking for 9.5 billion in 2014.”

UN human rights chief slams failure to shut Guantanamo

“Washington is breaking international law by holding detainees indefinitely at Guantanamo and must honour a pledge to shut the controversial jail, the UN’s human rights chief said.  ‘The continuing indefinite incarceration of many of the detainees amounts to arbitrary detention and is in clear breach of international law.  It severely undermines the United States’ stance that it is an upholder of human rights… When other countries breach these standards, the US — quite rightly — strongly criticises them for it.’  The jail, in a US Navy base in Cuba, was opened in 2002 to hold prisoners taken in the ‘War on Terror’ waged by George W. Bush after the 9/11 attacks.”

Obama picks Goldman Sachs exec for ambassador to Canada

“U.S. President Barack Obama has selected a partner at the investment firm of Goldman Sachs in Chicago to be the new U.S. ambassador to Canada, CBC News has learned.  Sources tell CBC News Network’s Power & Politics that Bruce Heyman has accepted the job but still has to pass a vetting process in order to be be formally nominated. His confirmation will be up to the U.S. Congress.  Well known as a high-level fundraiser to Barack Obama, Heyman and his wife Vicki, also a fundraiser, raised more than $1 million for Obama and were on his national finance committee.  Heyman runs the private wealth fund at Goldman Sachs.”

State-Wrecked: The Corruption of Capitalism in America – David Stockman

“As the federal government and its central-bank sidekick, the Fed, have groped for one goal after another — smoothing out the business cycle, minimizing inflation and unemployment at the same time, rolling out a giant social insurance blanket, promoting homeownership, subsidizing medical care, propping up old industries (agriculture, automobiles) and fostering new ones (‘clean’ energy, biotechnology) and, above all, bailing out Wall Street — they have now succumbed to overload, overreach and outside capture by powerful interests. The modern Keynesian state is broke, paralyzed and mired in empty ritual incantations about stimulating ‘demand.'”
