Bigger than Libor? Forex probe hangs over banks

“A global investigation into the setting of the London interbank lending rate, and related global benchmarks, has so far yielded about $3.6 billion in fines. Penalties for some of the biggest players are still to come. Traders have also faced criminal charges.  As the extent of damage caused by Libor-rigging is revealed, lawyers say the probe into fixing currency rates could unfold in a similar way, and rival its impact.  London is the center of the loosely regulated foreign exchange market, the biggest in the world’s financial system with average daily turnover of $5.3 trillion. Proven abuse in this market would have a significant ripple effect, exposing offending firms to a host of legal action.”

Chinese university fires outspoken economist amid crackdown on dissent

“A liberal Chinese economist who had been an outspoken critic of China’s ruling Communist Party has been expelled from the elite Peking University, amid a broader crackdown on dissent.  Professor Xia Yeliang, 53, had drawn the ire of school officials for his blog posts calling for democratic reforms and rule of law in China. Xia said he was told on Friday that professors and school leaders had voted to end his contract. Chinese liberals and intellectuals had hoped the new government under President Xi Jinping that took over in March would be more tolerant of calls for reform but it appears authorities won’t tolerate any challenge to their rule.”

Russia Issues Travel Warning to Its Citizens About U.S. and Extradition

“‘Warning for Russian citizens traveling internationally,’ the Foreign Ministry bulletin said. ‘Recently, detentions of Russian citizens in various countries, at the request of American law enforcement, have become more frequent — with the goal of extradition and legal prosecution in the United States.’  Citing examples in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Lithuania and Spain, the Foreign Ministry said, ‘Experience shows that the judicial proceedings against those who were in fact kidnapped and taken to the U.S. are of a biased character, based on shaky evidence, and clearly tilted toward conviction.'”

Fmr. NSA chief: ‘Morally arrogant’ Snowden will probably become alcoholic

“Gen. Michael Hayden, a former NSA and CIA chief, shared a lot of opinions during a discussion at a Washington church Sunday, beyond his thoughts on terrorists’ love for Gmail and the U.S. government’s approach to the Internet. Discussing the ‘tension between security and liberty’ at St. John’s Episcopal Church near the White House, Hayden criticized the reporting of NSA surveillance programs, argued  that society must make a choice between security and liberty, and took personal shots at NSA leaker Edward Snowden.”

Let Him Without a Plank in His Own Eye Cast the First Stone

“This is not to say that Russia has a spotless record.  As mentioned, a pox on them all – most states only differ in degree, not in direction.  Whatever one can say about Putin and about the history of the Russians and the Soviet Union before it – and of course, much can be said – this much is clear, right now, today: Snowden found asylum there, and Putin helped put a stop to the senseless murder of more Syrians.  If someone can get a Nobel Peace Prize merely for being elected president, certainly these actions are worthy as well.
In the meantime, Rand Paul has turned this into a black pot calling another black pot black. The US government has plenty of blood on its hands.  In this, it is no exception.”

Obama will address country on Syria; calls crisis ‘threat to global peace’

“President Barack Obama, facing hardened international opposition to a strike against Syria and returning home to a skeptical American public, will address the country Tuesday to make his case.  Obama said that he would tell Congress and the public in coming days that any American strike would be ‘limited and proportionate.’ He did not directly answer a question about whether he would go forward with an attack without the approval of Congress.  Military officials on Friday told NBC News that the White House asked the Pentagon for an expanded list of potential targets in Syria, and one senior official warned that it could represent ‘mission creep.'”

McCain blames Obama for U.S. losing credibility in the Middle East

“President Barack Obama’s failure to act amid spiralling violence in Egypt has led the US to lose all credibility in the Middle East, senator John McCain said Sunday.  McCain compared US inaction to Obama’s policy on Syria. ‘There is no policy. And there is no strategy. And therefore we react and we react poorly. One of the best examples is Syria where the president said Bashar al-Assad uses chemical weapons, that’s a red line. He’s used them and we have done virtually nothing in response to that. The centrifuges in Tehran continue to spin, Iraq unravels,’ he said.”

Blair likens Saddam to Hitler [2003]

“Comparing Saddam Hussein to Adolf Hitler, British Prime Minister Tony Blair says he would be pushing for Iraq’s disarmament irrespective of the position of America.‘  Many have accused Blair of behaving like U.S. President George W. Bush’s lapdog.  But Blair rejected suggestions that he had been dragged into confrontation with Iraq by Bush, insisting that he had raised concerns about Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction at his first meeting with the U.S. president, before the September 11 terror attacks.  Britain, Spain and the United States are co-sponsoring a new U.N. resolution that could trigger war against Iraq. France, Russia, China are pushing to give U.N. weapons inspections more time.”

John Kerry: Assad is the new Hitler because of chem. weapon use

“Secretary of State John Kerry today compared Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad to Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein as he said new lab tests proved that deadly sarin nerve gas was used to kill nearly 1,500 civilians last month. ‘Bashar al-Assad now joins a list of Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein who have used these weapons in time of war,’ Kerry told NBC’s ‘Face the Nation.’ Kerry called the murderous attack an ‘affront against the decency and sensibilities of the world.’  ‘So this case is building and this case will build.'”

Iran claims U.S. Congress not ‘authorized’ to authorize Syria strikes

“The US Congress is not authorised to green-light American military strikes against Syria as any such action would be in violation of international law, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Sunday.  ‘Mr Obama cannot interpret and construe international law for his own (benefit),’ Zarif told reporters after a late afternoon cabinet meeting, the ISNA news agency reported.  ‘Congress cannot authorise strikes (against Syria) and that attack would be in violation of international law,’ he said, explaining that ‘only the UN Security Council — under special conditions — can issue authorization’ for the use of force to restore international peace.”
